Fox Unveils Fall 2020 Programming Plans 05.11.2020 In a non-pandemic world, Monday would have marked the start of broadcast's annual upfront week in New York City. But circumstances being what they are, networks are releasing information virtually. On Monday, NBCUniversal hosted an hour-long online presentation with advertisers and the press to mostly talk about its One Platform offering. Fox went a step further, releasing its fall and midseason 2020 programming plans, even though production changes will likely affect this line-up. "The effects of this global health crisis leave no business unaffected. As a media company that prides itself on an entrepreneurial spirit and the focus that comes with doing fewer things better, we mobilized, swiftly creating an entirely new, original-programming lineup for the fall to share with our partners this upfront," said Charlie Collier, CEO, Fox Entertainment, in a statement. Fox really only has three nights a week of live-action entertainment programming, with the other four nights filled mostly by sports with one-Sunday-partial night of animation. With the NFL planning to play its season as planned come fall, Thursday nights remain reserved for football. Fridays nights are for WWE's Friday Night Smackdown and Saturdays for Fox Sports Saturday. Sunday nights continue to be programmed with a line-up of NFL on Fox followed by four animated comedies: The Simpsons, Bless the Harts, Bob's Burgers and Family Guy. Out of that lineup, only two new series are planned: psychological drama Next, starring Mad Men's John Slattery and Filthy Rich starring Sex and the City's Kim Cattrall. Both of those series were already in the can after being held over from this year. Sony Pictures Television-produced L.A.'s Finest, starring Jessica Alba and Gabrielle Union, will come over to Fox from cable operator Spectrum, while Cosmos: Possible Worlds, hosted by Neil DeGrasse Tyson, will air on Fox after previously airing on Nat Geo before that network was sold to Disney. TV's top-rated series, The Masked Singer, will return for season four on Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT, followed by Masterchef Junior at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Midseason will see Ryan Murphy-produced original dramas 9-1-1 and 9-1-1: Lone Star return, as well as Mayim Bialik's new comedy, Call Me Kat, which is executive produced by Bialik and her Big Bang Theory castmate Jim Parsons. Two new animated comedies-The Great North and Housebroken-will premiere along with new seasons of Amy Poehler's Duncanville. On the reality side, Fox stays in business with Gordon Ramsay with the return of Hell's Kitchen. Fox has yet to make decisions on most of its return live-action series and all of its pilots since the return to production still remains unclear. For insiders at media agencies, networks, and advertisers, however, the Upfront season is placing thoughts of September squarely into May. Of course, the very idea of a fall TV season in today’s video world seems old fashioned. The broadcast networks might still adhere to fall and mid-season schedules for debuting new shows, but their competitors do not. Ad-supported cable networks premiere many new series when the broadcast nets are airing repeats and some limited-run series (mostly non-sweeps months and the summer). Premium cable networks, such as HBO, Showtime, and Starz, air new shows throughout the year. Streaming services, such as Netflix and Amazon Prime, release full seasons of new series whenever they happen to be ready. CBS All Access does as well, although it releases new episodes on a weekly schedule, rather than all at once. In a television landscape of 10-episode cable series, and streaming services where you can binge- watch entire seasons, viewers don’t necessarily think in terms of TV seasons anymore. Dr. Setiabudhi 229 Bandung 40154 E-mail: [email protected] Abstract This research aims to investigate the types of politeness strategies that are performed by Gordon Ramsay in judging the Masterchef US and Masterchef Junior US contestants’ dishes and to reveal whether Gordon Ramsay performs any different politeness strategies between the Master chef and Masterchef Junior contestants. The data spring from Gordon Ramsay utterances, taken from the elimination test of two episodes of Masterchef season 4 (episode 9 and 12) and the elimination test of two episodes of Masterchef Junior US season 1 (episode 2 and 6). The framework of Brown & Levinson’s (1987) politeness strategies is adopted. Findings reveal that Gordon Ramsay performed bald on-record strategy, positive politeness, and off record strategy. Furthermore, Ramsay performed diferent varieties of politeness strategies in Masterchef; and performed only positive politeness strategy in Masterchef Junior. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, there were no live network presentations to the industry, and for the first time since I’ve been evaluating television programming, I did not watch any of the fall pilots before the shows aired. Many new and returning series experienced production delays, resulting in staggered premieres, shortened seasons, and unexpected cancellations. The big San Diego and New York comic-cons were canceled. There was virtually no pre-season buzz for new broadcast or cable series. Stuck at home with fewer new episodes of scripted series than ever to watch on ad-supported TV, people turned to streaming services in large numbers. Netflix, which had plenty of shows in the pipeline, surged in terms of both viewers and new subscribers. Disney+, boosted by season 2 of The Mandalorian and new Marvel series, WandaVision and Falcon and the Winter Soldier, was able to experience tremendous growth.
