The project aims at improving food security in these districts using high yielding rice varieties equipped with tolerances to prevailing stresses. These twenty districts grow rice in about 2.9 M ha out of the country’s total rice area of about 11.3 M ha. Twelve out of the above twenty project districts in southern Bangladesh face the problem of soil salinity of various levels. Recently, BRRI dhan 47 , Binadhan-8 and Binadhan - 10 have been released by the Government of Bangladesh for the salinity-prone areas. These varieties can grow in saline soils with EC of 12 dSm-1 and have performed well on farmer’s fields with an yield advantage of about 1 t/ha over BRRI dhan 28 and 29, the predominantly cultivated high yielding rice varieties in areas with low soil salinity level. Thus, these salt-tolerant varieties offer a high potential for the expansion of rice cultivation to new salt-affected areas and also to increase rice production in low to moderate saline areas, especially during the ‘Boro’ season. For the distribution of salt-tolerant rice seeds in the potential areas, an assessment of ‘upazilas’, ‘unions’ and ‘mauzas’ suitable for the dissemination of BRRI dhan 47, Binadhan-8 and - 10 rice seeds has been carried out. In the 65 upazilas of 12 salt-affected districts in South Bangladesh, 498 unions and 4070 ‘mauzas’ have been identified, based on criteria described in the report, where these variety can be cultivated. Upazila-wise maps showing the location of ‘mauzas’ suitable (with slight to moderate soil salinity levels) and not suitable (with salinity level severe to very severe) have been provided in this report. Also, ‘mauzas’ with no salinity where other HYVs can be grown, have been shown in these upazilas. It is hoped that this report will be useful in the assessment of upazila-wise seed requirement and the dissemination of salinity tolerant BRRI dhan 47, Binadhan-8 and - 10 and other HYVs in their targeted environments. We would appreciate receiving feedback on the report. Authors Acknowledgements uthors acknowledge the support and help received from different sources in preparing this report. The funding support for the project on Sustainable Rice Seed Production and Delivery Systems for Southern Bangladesh (SRSPDS) has been provided by the USAID. AMd. Abeed Hossain Chawdhury, Director, Computer and GIS Unit, Bangladesh Agriculture Research Council (BARC) made available the mauza, union, upazila and district boundary layers. The soil salinity map of Bangladesh used in this study were received from Soil Resource Development Institute, Dhaka. xi | List of Tables, Figures and Maps xii | Site Suitability Analysis for Dissemination of Salt-tolerant Rice Varieties in Southern Bangladesh CHAPTER 1 Introduction Bangladesh is a country of 14.4 M ha geographical area and has a large population (estimated at 158 million in the middle of 2011), with a density of more than 1100 persons per km2. Rice is the staple food crop growing on about 72% of the total cultivated land and continues to be the most important crop for food security of the country. The USAID supported CSISA-Bangladesh project on “Sustainable Rice Seed Production and Delivery Systems for Southern Bangladesh” is being executed by the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in twenty districts viz., Bagerhat, Barguna, Barisal, Bhola,Chuadanga, Faridpur, Gopalganj, Jhalokati, Jessore, Jhenaidaha, Khulna, Madaripur, Magura, Meharpur, Narail, Patuakhali, Pirojpur, Rajbari, Satkhira and Shariatpur (Map1). These districts grow rice in about 2.9 M ha out of the country’s total rice area of 11.3 M ha. The project aims at contributing to the Government of Bangladesh’s efforts in improving national and household food security through enhanced and sustained productivity.
