In memoriam: Longtime member of our club, Jerry Radzikowski of Westland, Michigan, passed away in Novem- ber. Please remember the Radzikowski family during this time of bereavement. ioneer Edsel Sales Inc. was the name of the Edsel dealership located in Lancaster, P California. The dealership opened for business in September 1957 and subsequently folded—along with the Edsel.

Fast forward a decade later to Bremerton, Washington and the summer of 1968. A college student named Greg is performing some volunteer service for senior citizens in the com- munity. On one occasion he is helping a retired Ford mechanic, presumably “Mr. Agon”, to move. While loading boxes in the man’s , one full of old clothes popped open and on top of the stack inside was the Pioneer Edsel coveralls. Greg took the coveralls out of the box for a closer look. As he was holding them the man said he could have them if he wanted—that box is going to the trash! As luck would have it the overalls fit Greg per- Extra Copies of the fectly. Over the years he would wear them to go bird hunting in the winter, sometimes 2021 Calendar Available! lying on the ground in the snow since their white color provided great camouflage. Often he had been urged to throw those old paint stained coveralls away. Fortunately, just as Your Price: back in 1968, he did not. $10 for 1st copy $8.00 each additional copy Although never destined to be examined on the same level of magnitude as the “Shroud of

Contact : Turin”, a less-than-scientific study of this treasured artifact reveals that Agon most likely Sheila Randel for availability worked in the dealership’s paint and body repair department based upon the numerous Ice 5989 Maplewood Road Mentor-on-the-Lake, OH 44060 Green and Horizon Blue paint stains found on the garment. The union made “GO-PFOR” Email: [email protected] coveralls are a size 40 and were manufactured by Johnson & Co. of St. Peter, Minnesota.

“Great Gifts for the Holidays!” Originally the overalls had either long sleeves with green cuffs or longer length short See other items on Page 6. sleeves. However, both the sleeve length and the leg length had been taken up. It is as- sumed they were tailored for Agon since Greg said the overalls remain just as he found them in 1968. The Edsel logo “E” patch is three-inch diameter. The name “Agon” above the right pocket and “Pioneer Edsel” on back are both embroidered by hand. This was common practice for labeling dealership work uniforms in the fifties.

Part 2: Edsel Dealership Facilities Guide Article by: Bruce Dean

4 ollowing its introduction, the narrative of the booklet presents several factors to consider in the selection of a building site. Top- F ics included location on street, suitability for construction, community characteristics, accessibility and convenience, focal point, used car lot, parking space, and room for expansion. The booklet provided a space allocation table for both property and building sizes by percentage.

The next section is entitled “Exteriors” and explains the importance of a good “front” for the dealership. Factors to consider were identification, showroom entrance and the “over-all Edsel look”. This could be achieved by the size and placement of dealership signs, exterior lighting, and by using Edsel’s approved dealership exterior color scheme of white, gray and green.

Next to come were factors to consider for the new car sales area. These factors included sizing for showroom space, sales manager’s office, closing rooms, meeting room, and the customer waiting area. Other topics and illustrations dealt with the arrangement of special lighting for showroom display . Other dramatic effects included a luminous plastic wall as a backdrop and a turntable for the new cars.

This is followed by several pages that dealt with the used car sales area. Topics included design and arrangement of the lot, accessi- bility, and types of lot surfaces. Illustrations for fencing, modernization of a used car sales office, lighting for the used car area and signage provided vital information for selling the dealership’s inventory of Green Light (used) Cars.

Perhaps the most important section of the booklet, Color Guide for Edsel Dealerships, is found on pages 17-19. Reproduced here in its entirety, this section provided the paint schemes of the exterior, showroom, parts area and service area of the dealership. As the text says: “Color attracts! Color identifies! Color sells! Color can give your dealership the look that spells “Edsel” - and sells Edsel – to everyone who comes within seeing distance.” Edsel “High-Light Gray” was specified for painted areas of the dealer- ship’s exterior. The interior paint scheme for the showroom included the colors of Edsel High-Light Gray, white and beige. Ceil- ings should always be white. Edsel green lettering on beige walls was suggested for the parts sales area. The service area was very colorful with its white upper and Edsel green lower wall sections divided by a 2 to 4 inch bright yellow dado stripe and a 6 inch black floor belt line. Special colors were specified traffic markings, fire protection, first-aid benches and tool cabinets located in the service area. Story continued next Issue.

Above left: Exterior color scheme found on Page 17 provided a wide swatch of Edsel High-Light Gray (greenish light gray). Below left & right: Interior paint schemes on page 18 suggested beige for the Showroom and Parts Area to highlight display cars and Edsel green signage. Paint specifications for the Service Area and associated equipment were provided on Page 19. International Edsel Club Merchandise
