Inside Bones' Hall Call Music Row Relocation April 1, 2013, Issue 339 Inside Bones’ Hall Call Following this afternoon’s news that Premiere syndicated morning host Bobby Bones will be inducted into the Country Radio Hall of Fame with the 2014 class, Country Aircheck digs deeper into the unexpected acceleration of the selection process. CRS Exec. Dir. Bill Mayne explains that the Hall of Fame selection committee waived its usual application criteria for a number of reasons. “For several years, we’ve been concerned at the lengthy delays in the process,” Best Western: CMA’s Steve Moore and industry leaders Mayne says. “To keep the Hall as relevant as Bobby Bones gather to sign the “Ampersand Agenda” urging the possible and to grow the induction dinner as an re-adoption of “Western” in describing the genre. Among the most notable changes is moving the ACM Experience from the Mandalay Bay to The Orleans. Country Aircheck asked ACM CEO Bob Romeo what to expect from this year’s event and telecast. BOBAFLEX INTERVIEW WITH SHAUN MCCOY 5/21/16 Hartford, CT By: Nina McCarthy, Music Journalist [email protected] A special thank you to my friend Heidi Marion for sitting in on the interview and to Nathan Jones, Tour Manager for his amazing hospitality and Doug Weber at new Ocean Media for making it possible. BRR: You’ve probably had this question a million times, but you and Marty have ancestors back to the famous Hatfield/McCoy feud. Can you enlighten us a little bit on that? Shaun: Our family comes from the Tug River. They migrated from that area, and that’s where it all kind of took place. As far as a family tree, I have a hard time because we are just told and we go to the family reunions but our great grandfather did not have a social security number and he was shot and killed when he was 21 for stealing a horse in the mountains. He wasn’t a guy that had a lot of paperwork. So, we just go on our great aunts and uncles and who they say our other members are. But our little branch of McCoy's went from the Tug after the feud and died down and moved onto a little section of Lincoln County, West Virginia. That’s where our McCoys are from, which is only about two hours from where it all took place. We kind of migrated just a little bit North in West Virginia, but we’re still there. BRR: I read something about that when you go back now, the Hatfields just kill you with drinking? Shaun: We actually meet the Hatfields all over the road and they just try to kill us with bourbon now.

But the consultant’s lettuce-and-tomatoes analogy last week in this space touched off a social and, eventually, major media tidal wave. Go figure. We’ll get to Hill in the next story (right), after female PDs and MDs weigh in with their thoughts on a well-known though still confounding reality. In full disclosure, some of the women we contacted declined to contribute for lack of time or lack of what they felt would be helpful feedback. • THE MUSICAL FEATURES of 2015'S TOP-RANKED COUNTRY SONGS
THE MUSICAL FEATURES OF 2015’s TOP-RANKED COUNTRY SONGS By Mason Taylor Allen Senior Honors Thesis Department of Music University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill April 22, 2016 Approved: Dr. Jocelyn R. Neal, Thesis Advisor Dr. Allen Anderson, Reader Dr. Andrea Bohlman, Reader © 2016 Mason Taylor Allen ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Mason Taylor Allen: The Musical Features of 2015’s Top-Ranked Country Songs Under the direction of Dr. Jocelyn R. Neal The 2015 top-ten country songs analyzed in this study are characterized by the various formats of their song form, harmonies, and lyrics. This thesis presents a comprehensive study of the structure and narratives in sixty-seven songs that summarizes the distinctive features within those domains of contemporary commercial country music. A detailed description of the norm along with identifiable trends emerges. The song form that features most prominently in this repertory includes a verse-chorus-bridge form with three iterations of the chorus, an intro and outro section, and instrumental sections immediately following each chorus. The top-ten country songs have varying degrees of departure from this typical model. Primary features of the harmonies of these top songs include the frequent use of a double-tonic complex, the absence of a 5-1 authentic cadence, the same chord progression throughout the verse, chorus, and bridge, and the use of only two chords throughout the song. Lyrical analyses show that 2015 songs are continuing the traditional themes about romantic attraction, love, heartache, good times and partying, home, family, nostalgia, religion, and inspiration, within the context of small-town country life that this genre has used for years.

Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres by Vivian Le A THESIS submitted to Oregon State University Honors College in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems (Honors Scholar) Presented May 29, 2020 Commencement June 2020 AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Vivian Le for the degree of Honors Baccalaureate of Science in Accounting and Business Information Systems presented on May 29, 2020. Title: Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres. Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Ryann Reynolds-McIlnay The rise of digital streaming has largely impacted the way the average listener consumes music. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time.

  • If There's a Pedigree for a Modern Country Music Star, Then Angaleena
If there’s a pedigree for a modern country music star, then Angaleena Presley fits all of the criteria: a coal miner’s daughter; native of Beauty, Kentucky; a direct descendent of the original feuding McCoys; a one-time single mother; a graduate of both the school of hard knocks and college; a former cashier at both Wal-Mart and Winn-Dixie. Perhaps best of all the member of Platinum-selling Pistol Annies (with Miranda Lambert and Ashley Monroe) says she “doesn’t know how to not tell the truth.” That truth shines through on her much-anticipated debut album, American Middle Class, which she co-produced with Jordan Powell. Yet this is not only the kind of truth that country music has always been known for—American Middle Class takes it a step further by not only being a revealing memoir of Presley’s colorful experiences but also a powerful look at contemporary rural American life. “I have lived every minute on this record. My mama ain’t none too happy about me spreading my business around but I have to do it,” Presley says. “It’s the experience of my life from birth to now.” Yet the specificity of the album’s twelve gems only makes it more universal. While zooming in on the details of her own life, Presley exposes themes to which everyone can relate. The album explores everything from a terrible economy to unexpected pregnancies to drug abuse in tightly written songs that transcend the specific and become tales of our shared experiences. “I think a good song is one where people listen to a very personal story and think ‘That’s my story, too,’” Presley says.
