K RAISING TECH-SAVVY KIDS WITH A BALANCE P. 34 Editor’s Note In its Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Report 2015, the World Economic Forum has ranked Qatar as the second most tourism-friendly destination in the Middle East and North Africa (Mena) region. The rankings were based on a variety of parameters, including international openness, business environment, health and hygiene, ground and port infrastructure, to name a few. Simultaneously, Qatar was ranked second for safety and security and third for having a supportive business environment.

When one considers tourism in Qatar, especially in light of the National Vision, it becomes quickly clear that Qatar is not necessarily a tourist destination, rather it is a cultural destination. Every year, it runs a cultural exchange programme that serves as a bridge between Qatar and an international audience. Through a variety of exhibitions, festivals, competitions and events, Qatar promotes mutual understanding, recognition and appreciation between countries across the globe.

Stephanie Akkaoui Hughes in her article ‘On a Cultural Safari’ (Page 31) states that every visit to Qatar, whatever its original purpose, naturally morphs into what can be called a cultural safari. According to her, Qatar has at least three interacting forms of culture; a national curated culture, an ‘un-curated’ street culture, and a curated culture of the streets. These three cultural forms make of a ‘Cultural Tripolis’, a three dimensional city, made of three intertwined cultural versions. Among the three, national curated culture is a city of various cultural events; un-curated street culture depicting the population mix, while curated culture of the streets boasts touristic and natural sites. In fact, these triple dynamics of an intentionally cultivated culture not only attract a more enlightened and knowledge-oriented type of tourist, but also contribute to educating tourists, as well as locals and residents.

Having said that, whatever be the motive for your visit — and all the more if you reside in Qatar — it is very hard to resist a visit to the landmark Museum of Islamic Art, a tour of the old souk or an evening at one of the many cultural events around town. And if you want to try a daycation in Qatar where you can spend a few hours by a crystal-clear pool, go for a picnic, take a dhow cruise, or savour delicious cuisine, rightly turn to Page 26 and find out our pick of the best days out.

14 Society The Creative Couple Throughout their years in Qatar, British couple Stephen and Verity Watkins have painted a number of scenes from daily sights, and have had their works displayed at various offices and residential towers across Doha. Sami Said Ali writes

ascinated by the Arabian world, a British artist couple have depicted Fa number of scenes from daily sights – the ever-changing skyline, amaz- ing architecture or a camel’s emotions. With three daughters to fill the house with fun, it’s exciting that the couple find time to paint their passion.

The Watkins Stephen Watkins has had his works displayed at various office and residen- tial towers across Doha. He specialises in minimalist architectural paintings while his wife, Verity Watkins’ drawings depict her love for animals. She is a lover of macro painting and her drawings are filled with intense emotions of human existence. Stephen uses lines in a very ab- stract form while Verity is more of a realist artist eyeing details of her objects.

A senior architectural consultant working on the multimillion project at Sidra, the route for Stephen to be an artist has been quite natural. Immense imagination was part of his career as seeing a project through from conception to completion was his work. It was this creative streak that led him to stroking brush of bold lines.

Society 15 Stephen’s work “I enjoy experimenting with paint on canvas using strong lines to depict landscapes and structures; I really enjoy playing around with the vivid colours that acrylics offer and the fluid feel of paints... a good contrast to the more structured, technical side of architectural drawing,” Stephen writes about himself on his website. “The skyline of Doha is ever-changing. When I first arrived, there were just a few buildings; then there was a huge increase of cranes and expansion of buildings. I currently add date to my drawings so that it also becomes a historical documentation of the skyline.”

Stephen is now experimenting with Arabesque patterns. Breaking the skyline and putting them into a pattern just for more abstract images. His architectural art pieces have found their homes in various locations mostly interior design, construction and real estate companies, as well as law firms and other local offices. He has sold paintings to Origins, AT Kearney, Fluor – Global Engineering -Con struction Company, Redco Construction and Almana, to name a few. His work can also been seen at The Pearl-Qatar, Alfardan Towers and The Tornado Towers.

Collaborative work: Though the Watkins’ working styles are entirely different, they respect their artistic interventions and have also tried to do some collaborative works of art which are amazingly breathtaking.

She is a lover of animals and painting camels and horses has been her recent exploration in art. “I can sense depth of feelings when I translate the pictures to the canvas. I allow myself to be carried by colours and emotions and the final is a product of deep connections of heart.” She paints from the photo- graphs she had clicked earlier during her outings in Doha.

A born traveller, Verity is quick to imbibe the vibes of the land she sets her foot on and Doha had done the magic of inspiring her to explore the desertscape. As a child, she had been travelling through in Australia, Borneo and Gibraltar, with additional trips to Africa, Indonesia, Malaysia, Europe and Sri Lanka, to name a few. “I have brought elements of my personal experiences from these amazing countries into my own works of art,” she says.

Before her exploration of animals, Verity “Since moving to the Middle East in and this summer she had been busy had a strong focus on nautical paintings. 2009, my work has been influenced by taking community classes at Virginia “My art is varied, I produce nautical the landscape and colours here. 18 Society FOCUS spotlight ‘I WANT TO LIVE TO ACCOMPLISH MY DREAMS’

Life turned tough for this teenager but the world shows him that he has a reason to hope for a better future. Sami Said Ali talks to Nepalese expat Ujwal Rajbanshi and finds out how fate paved a different path for him

ife of an expatriate usually lasts long. Work becomes the focal point Lof his existence to meet targets set by himself or his loved ones. Endless loads of hard work pay off in the form of the curvy smiles when they visit their home after long days of turmoil in the desert. But not every life living in constant hope meets the same destiny. Some have to fight fate with dogged determination for their survival.

When ‘better’ days arrived, the 19-year- old Ujwal Rajbanshi left his hometown in Nepal, to join the workforce in Doha. Little did he know that his kidneys had been malfunctioning for long. With dreams reaching for the moon, he had come to the State of Qatar, like any other native from his country, hoping for a better living and education for his loved ones. And yes, he had joined Landmark Group which meant that he would have a prom- ising future.

Society 19 Ujwal Rajbanshi Within the first week of joining the firm and taking over responsibilities, he had stomach discomfort and took regular medication, attributing the pain to a change of climate and food habits. When the pain increased to a level beyond endurance, he was taken to Hamad Hos- pital, where things took a different turn. The efficient doctors at Hamad Hospital determined his case as failure of both kid- neys. It was Stage Five of the disease and immediate replacement of the kidneys was required for survival.

Hopes were shattered and dreams were reconstructed based on survival rather than better living. This teenager was left in an anonymous land struggling for his daily needs. A ray of hope came in when news about him appeared in a Nepalese newspaper.

Ramesh Dhakal, a keen social worker, took over the boy’s responsibility writing to Gulf Times, urging the public to join hands to help Ujwal to survive. Donations started pouring in as the boy was treated with utmost care at Hamad Hospital. The 19-year-old appeared cheerful and was still too young to understand the seriousness of his life-threatening illness. He would lie on his bed smiling or playing games on his mobile. He was being subjected to three dialysis per week and immediately a search for a transplant donor began.

Their search ended when Ujwal’s mother

was booked by multiple couples a year in advance, Gandhi said. Fifteen years ago, such cultural awareness from banquet hall operators was hard to come by as the Indian immigrant community was still new to the area, vendors and Indian community leaders say.

From 2000 to 2013, the number of Indians across the six-county Chicago region nearly doubled to 111,000 people, according to U.S. Census statistics. The population rise was due, in large part, to highly skilled workers being lured to Chicago for jobs and to the suburbs for high-performing schools, Indian commu- nity leaders have said.

While working as a catering assistant at the Fairmont Chicago hotel, Sabrina Hans, who is Indian, remembers how relieved potential Indian clients seemed when she understood requests such as the need for vegetarian menus, or that Muslim wed- ding receptions don’t offer a bar; or the Hindu custom known as homa, in which the bride and groom circle a holy fire that symbolizes light, power and knowledge.

Heads up: next time you want to stay home for any and is an established T holiday, you can smartly say you are having a “staycation”. Although this word has only just freelance writer and communication consultant. started to roll off my tongue, apparently staycation entered our everyday lexicon about 10 years back during the financial crisis which forced many people to rethink their holiday plans away from home. Instead of revving up their cars and campers folks stayed at home, enjoyed local outings and soaked up the sun in their own backyards.

Call it whatever you feel like, we all know staying at home for a holiday is nothing new. I grew up having spent most holidays at home. I can’t imagine my childhood summers without fishing in the brook behind my house, building cabins in the woods with my sisters and being naughty and raiding our neighbour’s crabapple tree every summer! So how about a stayca- tion in Qatar in the summer? I am sure many people living here would agree that the summer heat screams for what I like to call, “the great summer escape” to back home or somewhere not quite as intense weather-wise. Also living in Qatar and being an expat, I want to be with family and make connections from the place where I am from. On the other hand, the school break is endless and we don’t always have to leave for the entire summer. And this is where a staycation is sometimes in order.

In fact, while my kids school year finally ended last month, the chitter chatter at pickup time was all about summer destination plans. I recall the fascination and raised eyebrows when one Mum declared most of the summer would be spent at home in Qatar. “What will you do here,” asked bewildered parents. Chuckling as if hoarding the best kept secret, she revealed that with bare roads, quiet malls, empty museums and cinemas she and her family would discover Qatar at their own pace, heat and all.

Herein lies the heart of a staycation. You vacation at home, which means doing fun stuff close to home. No hustle or bustle. Playing tourist in your hometown is one of those things people don’t do often enough. We get so caught up with everyday living and take for granted the things around us. Museums such as the incredible Museum of Islamic Art and the Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art are not to be missed and are well worth regular visits. Check out Qatar Museums website at www.qm.org.qa and you can even print out self-guided tour to museums, heritage sites, galleries, art spaces and the many public artworks like Richard Ser- ra’s East-West West-East sculptures in the desert landscape. Fun camps are always available throughout Doha for the kids in the summer. Even taking the family to brunch at one of the many hotels is a great escape from the everyday. Seriously, a staycation is sounding more and more appealing and is a perfect no-brainer holiday when all you want to do is have a chilled holiday from the comfort of your home

It wasn’t something that I was expecting, I am deeply appre- ciative of the fact that the government has recognized my efforts in the field of fashion, textile and craftsmanship. It is Indian fashions, USP and one which is not alive in any other part of the globe particularly practised by the number of people and craftsmen who are involved in the textile traditions of this country. We need to keep it going with as much Indian talent as we can get. This is going to be the critical part of keeping an Indian fashion element alive.

Who would you like to dress that you haven’t yet? The modern Indian corporate for- ward- looking woman of today. No one in particular as they are all stars in their own rights. Yes, Kangana once again would be fun to dress.

Did you personally meet with the late Princess Diana to design the clothes that she wore? No, unfortunately she cycled to the store in London at South Audley Street, and ordered the outfit she wore on her visit to Pakistan. I did speak to her on the phone but did not meet her. She was going to a temple and I was designing a sari for the event but she had an accident before that - a real pity

What is invisibobble

The mystique to invisibobble’s traceless out- come lies in its distinctively playful and propri- etary telephone cord shape and size. Wrapped around any type of hair, the invisibobble dis- tributes pressure on to several concentrated points around the ponytail, allowing for the hair to be held strongly, without being too tight or too loose. Thanks to invisibobble’s no-tug fea- tures and smooth surface, women can avoid the common hair-tie headaches and prevent split-ends, both of which are often caused by a tight do. The only tieless hair ring that is both anti-bacterial and hypoallergenic, invisibobble is made from polyurethane, better known as arti- ficial resin, so it cannot harbour dirt or bacteria. This material is also non-absorbent, making it the perfect hair tool for women when participat- ing in sports like swimmimg as well as for those who suffer from allergies and neurodermatitis.

Perfectly pink with the BCA ribbon looped inside the hair ring, this invisibobble will be available from the 1st of October until the 31st of October 2015 in many retail outlets, selected malls and leading pharmacies in Qatar.
