1 Welcome to the fi rst 2000 days: Your guide to resources in Strathcona County

There are 2000 days between the time your baby is born and when he/ she heads off to kindergarten. Experiences during these 2000 days have a lasting impact on later learning, health and success. Children's fi rst experiences determine how their brains are wired, lay the groundwork for future health, and form the foundation of the social and emotional skills needed for academic and workplace success.

We know that children need environments that are nurturing, stimulating, safe and consistent to support healthy development. Parents and caregivers play a big role and can do many things to stimulate development.

Families also require supportive environments in order to be able to meet children’s development needs. Multiple spheres of infl uence affect a child’s development, including caregivers outside the family, the neighbourhood environment, resources in the community, cultural and religious affi liations, and the attitudes, policies and resources provided by wider society.

This directory provides parents, families and caregivers information on the various programs, services and activities available in Strathcona County to support children and families. Information is available on a wide range of topics such as social and recreational activities, program subsidies, health services, child care options and looking after yourself as an adult in a child’s life.

Every child in Strathcona County is able to have the best start that they need by being developmentally ready for Kindergarten.

Disclaimer: This directory is to be used as a guide only, and should not be considered to be a fully authoritative nor an exhaustive list of services available in the community, nor of those actually provided by the agencies listed herein, nor of their qualifi ca- tions to provide such services.
