The country reached amazing results in the ASBC Asian Confederation Box- ing Championships in Tashkent where all of their five boxers advanced to the quarter-finals.

“This is an amazing ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Championship in Tashkent as we expected. Asia is strong in boxing and we are hoping all of our 60 boxers will have the chance to get great results in the Hamburg 2017 AIBA World Boxing Championships. We all knew before the start of the ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Championships that Tashkent will be a perfect host. We are so thankful for ASBC President Mr. Serik Konakbayev and also for the Uzbekistan Boxing Federation to support us in the venue. As I am referee I am following the ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Championships a bit different way. We could send five boxers to Tashkent and all of them advanced to the quarter-final and this is the best ever performance in an Asian Boxing Championships in our boxing history. We are so proud of our elite boxers and their hard work in the preparation paid off here in Uzbekistan. We will be also sending four athletes to the upcoming which will be held in this month. Our life is not so easy in Syria during our crisis but we are trying to focusing to our job and develop boxing in my country. Our boxers can train in the normal way only in Damascus and near to the capital while other region’s athletes have got hard to find the way to train in their clubs. We hosted the Syrian National Boxing Championships on February with a success while we have done also our Youth National Championships and selected four boxers to the ASBC Asian Confederation Youth Boxing Championships to Pattaya where we hope our strong Ammar Haidar will be getting medal. The Syrian Junior National Championships will be held this Summer and we will be able to send also four boxers to the ASBC Asian Confederation Junior Boxing Championships to Davao City in August. Furthermore, we will have Schoolboys National Championships also this Summer. The first edition of the Syrian Women’s National Championships was held in 2011 and luckily after our issues we were able to host our second female competition a few months ago and hopefully our ladies can return to the international events,” said Mr. Issa Al-Nassar in the venue of the ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Championships.

Currently I work in the Saudi Arabian Boxing Federation and we were able to launch our first ever development program with identified objectives. In Saudi Arabia we are focusing to the schoolboys and junior level which is the basic part of our sport. We have got of course elite boxers as well but we believe we will be able to get better results with our current schoolboys and juniors in the future. We have got a new and famous Cuban coach to develop our schoolboys and junior talents, he is Esquirol Maikro Romero who claimed gold medal at the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games as a boxer. Saudi Arabia will be sending 4-6 boxers to the ASBC Asian Confederation Junior Boxing Championships to the Philippines which will be our first ever participation in this level,” said Mr. Mohamed Kamel Shbib after the ASBC R&J Commission Meeting in the International Hotel in Tashkent.

Interview with ASBC EC member Mr. Wan Abdul Hamid Malaysian Boxing Federation’s official Mr. Wan Abdul Hamid is the Executive Committee member of the Asian Boxing Confederation who joined to the ASBC Refereeing & Judging meeting today in Tashkent. We asked him about Malaysia’s participation at the ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Championships and their future goals including the which will be held in Kuala Lumpur this August.

“I have arrived to the ASBC Refereeing & Judging Commission Meeting to Tashkent in the morning to discuss our main issues in the Asian level. Malaysia sent seven boxers to the ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Championships to Tashkent and I am satisfied with the performance of our team. Two of our boxers are advanced to the quarter-finals in the ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Championships in Tashkent where they met with the continent’s bests. Adil Hafiz Mohamed Pauzi advanced to the quarter-final of the light heavyweight (81kg) who is a newcomer in the national team and this was his second competition out of Malaysia. Our second quarter-finalist Abdul Salam Kasim is a new boxer in the national team and he worked well against his top Kazakh rival yesterday. Our boxers met with experienced Asian athletes but to be honest Muhammad Fuad Bin Mohamed Redzuan surprisingly lost in the first bout of the championships. Our best bantamweight (56kg) boxer Arfiqanie Ahmad Anshory will be joining back to the team soon who could not compete here in Tashkent this time. After the ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Championships we will have training camp in Almaty, Kazakhstan which is part of our preparation for the SEA Games. All kind of preparations for the Southeast Asian Games are according to our plan. Logistical, financial and technical issues are fixed in the preparation for the Southeast Asian Games and we are not facing any serious problems right now. After the Southeast Asian Games might be we have to reorganize our national team but everything depends on our achievements in Kuala Lumpur. We will have hard year also in 2018 when the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games will be our main events,” said Mr. Wan Abdul Hamid who worked in the ASBC R&J Meeting today.

President of the Nepal Boxing Association Mr. Ram Awale involved his country to the Asian boxing map

President of the Nepal Boxing Association Mr. Ram Awale arrived to the venue of the ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Cham- pionships to follow the continent’s biggest boxing event. Nepal is a developing boxing country in our continent which needs sup- port in the future but in spite of their dif- ficulties the South Asian nation are sending boxers to all AIBA and ASBC events in all age groups.

“This is an amazing ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Championship in Tashkent where 28 countries are participating from all region of the continent. We are feeling the Asian spirit here in Tashkent where the best boxers meet each other and competing for the quotas of the Hamburg 2017 AIBA World Boxing Championships. Nepal is proud of the President of the Asian Boxing Confederation Mr. Serik Konakbayev as everything depends on the leader in an organization. We believe we have got good leader who is understanding the sport and the needs of the countries such as Nepal. Nepal’s proud moment was the Moscow 1980 Olympic Games where our boxers took part at the very first time. This is our past but we have to keep our eyes on our future to develop our boxers and all areas of our sport. Nepal’s current economic situation is not the best in the South Asian region but we are working on it to deliver the sport to the people. As you know Nepal is a small country and boxing is in a developing stage therefore all kind of support would be useful for us in the future including facilities, equipments and other kind things and services. We have been trying to hold our national events and send our female and male boxers to the main AIBA and ASBC events,” said Mr. Ram Awale who is watching the competition in the venue.

36 www.asbcnews.org April, 2017 37 Together we are power Interview about Afghanistan’s developments Afghanistan sent a team to the ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Championships to Tashkent which was great effort from the developing country. Afghanistan has got 5,000 registered boxers in the country which is the first big step in their develop- ment. “We all amazed to see the environment of the ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Championship in Tashkent where boxing is so popular and the level of the organization is fantastic. We are so thankful for the Uzbekistan Boxing Federation covering our accommodation costs in our hard financial situation. The boxing in Afghanistan was established in 1923 when a German coach arrived to the country and started his training sessions in Kabul. The first ever national competition was held in Kabul in 1957. Our first boxers competed at the Moscow 1980 Olympics and we could send one athlete to the Athens 2004 Olympic Games and also to the London 2012 Olympic Games. Our best ever performance is a silver medal which was achieved by Muhammad Aman at the 1995 Asian Boxing Championships which took place also in Tashkent as the current edition. He lost to only Kazakhstan's Sydney 2000 Olympic Champion Yermakhan Ibraimov in the final of the competition. Boxing is also popular in Afghanistan as much part in the Asian continent but we are facing financial and other serious problems. The Afghanistan Boxing Federation registered 5,000 boxers last year in all age groups from the schoolboys up to the elite level. Afghanistan has got 34 provinces and following the 17 regional events we are trying to find the best fighters in our national tournaments. We are very proud of our women boxing team which we established in 2007 and our ladies competed in several ASBC and AIBA events. We are currently working hard in Afghanistan to develop all part of the sport and will be trying to get good results in the future. For the better achievements of our boxers we need the best cooperation in all stakeholders in Afghanistan to develop our national federation and the athletes. Our main target is to get a medal in the next Asian Games and we think our young boxers including Haroon Eshaq Zai, Mesawer Kakar and Aqluddin Nezami have got great future. They more trainings and competitions to get more success in the future. We are planning to take part in all of the AIBA and ASBC championships in 2017,” said former boxer Mr. Waheedullah Hameedi who is General Coordinator in the Afghanistan Boxing Federation and working as General Secretary in the University Sports Federation of Afghanistan.

38 www.asbcnews.org April, 2017 39 Together we are power Interview with Palestine’s head coach Mr. Nader Jayousi

Mr. Nader Jayousi is the coach of the Palestin- ian team and we asked him about the coun- try’s boxing life in Tashkent. He arrived with two boxers to the ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Championships to the Uzbek capital and their new middleweight (75kg) boxer, Qasim Abudabaat delivered a big sensation with his KO success against Sri Lanka’s Sam- path Kumara which was Palestine’s first ever victory in the history of the continental event.

“I admire the level of organization in this championships, the Uzbekistan Boxing Federation has done a great job hosting event. Everything is clear and easy, each team has got a translator which made things easier and broke the language barrier. I think the Palestinian boxers are still outclassed in such an event as the ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Championships that refers to not having any long term strategy in our boxing school system yet. Qasem’s win was the first in a big international competition and I think it would be put the Palestinians morally in a position where they actually can believe they are able to get triumphs in such a top event as the ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Championships. Palestine have to develop their boxers from the grassroots, regarding the older generations most important thing is to increase their participation in smaller international events. The preparation was not so good enough to this championship as there is not any hall for the national team to train together and usually we have only one national event through the year. It is obvious how better the Asian boxing level has gotten to, most of the countries have developed their boxers which comes from implementing long term programs and strategies, like Sri Lanka and Indonesia. Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan are always working on preparing new generation of champions. I am trying to aspire to build the boxing structure in Palestine in way that would make the country able to make its first gold medal in the Olympic Games in 2028. Our best boxing gym, Elbarrio is now hosting lots of programs for talented kids. Elbarrio has got National Champions in Palestine in all age groups and we start receiving kids from the age of 6. I would like to underline the importance that Elbarrio is the first boxing gym in Palestine that trains girls for how to box and takes it seriously as boys. We are sure that our biggest boxing gym is going to bring Palestinian women boxers to the Asian and World stage soon but we still need some time to develop them,” said Mr. Nader Jayousi in the venue of the ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Championships.

40 www.asbcnews.org April, 2017 41 Together we are power Interview with Jordan’s head coach Mr. Azzedine Aggoune The former Algerian head coach Mr. Azzedine Aggoune joined to the Jordan national team two years ago and they have been preparing their boxers to the main competitions. Jordan’s head coach is in the venue of the ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Cham- pionships and we asked him about his thoughts and opinions about our continental event and his country’s boxing present and future.

“First of all I would like to mention the programming of this ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Championship precise. The competition is the only possibility to qualify for the Hamburg 2017 AIBA World Boxing Championships and originally it was planned to be held in June. We would like to congratulate to the organizers especially the Uzbekistan Boxing Federation for their great efforts which they made into all aspects. We began our preparation late to this event because of the renewal of the Jordan Boxing Federation. The will be held in Baku, short after the ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Championships therefore we had to prepare two goals in the same time. Jordan’s male elite boxers did not compete in any events since May 2016 therefore we were faced with a lot of issues in the periodization and in the psychological aspect of the sport. The level of the countries in the Asian continent is the highest with host Uzbekistan on the top after their amazing performance in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Following the Uzbeks, Kazakhstan, China and Mongolia are coming in the lines of the Asian countries in my opinion. I have personally observed the development of certain countries since the Bangkok 2015 ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Championships. The development is not coming from the number of the medals which these countries achieved in Tashkent but their performance in the ring shows significant development in comparison to the last Bangkok edition. All boxing experts could realize the number of the RSCs and abandoned contests are decreased in the recent two years. I am very satisfied with Zeyad Eshaish’s performance who has done a good fight against Uzbekistan’s Rio 2016 Olympic Games silver medallist Shakhram Giyasov. He is only 19 and lack of the international experiences but he was brave and technically also superb in that contest. His teammate Obada Al-Kasbeh did the same strong performance against a star rival while Mohammad Al-Wadi was also competitive against China’s APB World Champion Zhang Jiawei at the bantamweight (56kg). I would like to mention the Executive Committee of the Jordan Boxing Federation was recently elected on April 30 during the first competition day of the ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Championships. I will submit to them my new development strategy and will be discussed how can we realize our long term projects,” said Mr. Azzedine Aggoune about their performance, the organization and their strategies.
