Thanks for so that your records can be updated. Thank you! your support!

PLEASE CONSIDER ON-LINE GIVING Visit our website and click on “ON LINE GIVING” and follow the instructions. It’s that easy!

OR CONSIDER USING OFFERTORY ENVELOPES

Why should I use offertory envelopes? Because in a very materialistic world, followers of Jesus get distracted, so we need reminders. Envelopes help us organize and carefully think out our manner of giving to the Lord. With- out envelopes, we tend to reach into our pockets at the last minute to pull out left-overs, what we do not really need. Thus, we easily end up giving to a waiter at a restaurant (the 15 to 20% tip), more than we give to the Lord each week.

When something is special and important, we usually wrap the gift up. Using envelopes helps us “wrap up” our gift for Jesus each week, making it more beautiful and meaningful.

Call the Parish Office to receive offertory envelopes.

Pope Francis noted the 70th anniversary of priestly ordination of Benedict XVI on the feast of Sts. Peter and Paul, June 29th. After praying the midday Angelus, Pope Francis said this:

“...And today marks an anniversary that touches the hearts of us all: 70 years ago, Pope Benedict was ordained a priest. To you, Benedict, dear father and brother, goes our affection, our grati- tude and our closeness. He lives in a monastery, a place intend- ed to house the contemplative communities here in the Vatican, so that they could pray for the Church. He is now the contempla- tive of the Vatican, who spends his life praying for the Church and for the diocese of Rome, of which he is bishop emeritus. Thank you, Benedict, dear father and brother. Thank you for your credible witness. Thank you for your gaze, constantly di- rected towards the horizon of God: thank you!”

On the feast of Sts. Peter and Paul in 1951, Joseph Alois Ratzinger was ordained to the priesthood alongside his brother Georg. Msgr. Georg Ratzinger (left side of photo) died last year, July 1st, at the age of 96.

PLAN TO SPEND AN HOUR BEFORE THE EUCHARISTIC LORD IN PRAYER FOR YOUR GRANDPARENTS

Fr. Russo will read the names of deceased Grandparents throughout the Holy Hour

If you wish your deceased Grandparents to be included in the litany before the Blessed Sacrament you are to submit a sacrificial offering of your choice In Memory of….

As faithful Catholics, we are taught that we should offer prayers and reparations for the dead. This is a spiritual work of mercy, a meritorious act on our part. From the beginning the Church has honored the memory of the dead and offered prayers in suffrage for them, above all the Eucharistic sacrifice, so that, thus purified, they may attain the beatific vision of God. The Church also commends almsgiving, indulgences, and works of penance undertaken on behalf of the dead: Let us help and commemorate them. If Job’s sons were purified by their father’s sacrifice, why would we doubt that our offerings for the dead bring them some consolation? Let us not hesitate to help those who have died and to offer our prayers for them (Catechism of the Catholic Church 1032).

The names (and offering) will be collected AT THE PARISH OFFICE ONLY DURING OFFICE HOURS in order to eliminate oversights.

WHO IS CHARLENE RICHARD?

This Tuesday, we will make a final pilgrimage to the last two churches in the Diocese named after St. Joseph. We will also stop at the grave of Charlene Richard (in Richard) whose brother will meet us to talk about her life. Plan to join us on this day of spiritual pilgrimage/enrichment. Details on how to sign-up are found on previous page in this bulletin.

Charlene Marie Richard (January 13, 1947 – August 11, 1959) was a twelve- year-old Roman Catholic Cajun girl from Richard, . She has become the focus of a popular belief that she is a saint—a person who is in heaven—who has performed a number of . Local clergy and diocesan officials permitted, promoted, and participated in the popular veneration of Richard for years prior to her being named a , the first step in the process.

Charlene was the second-oldest of ten children born to Joseph Elvin and Mary Alice Richard. Adults and children who knew her considered her to be smart but otherwise unremarkable. She was a devout Catholic but no more so than was customary in the local Cajun community.[1] Richard's mother said, "She liked sports and was always busy with something. She went to church and said her rosary, but she was just a normal little girl."[4] In May 1959, after reading a book about Therese of Lisieux. Richard asked her grandmother whether she, too, could become a saint by praying like Therese.

After reporting appearances of a tall woman in black who vanishes, and her teacher recommending that she was not herself, her mother took her to a physi- cian. As a result, only two weeks before her death she was diagnosed with acute lymphatic leukemia and hospitalized at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Lafayette, Louisiana. At the request of her family, she was informed by the hospital chaplain, Joseph Brennan, a newly ordained Catholic priest, that she was going to die. Though the illness was painful, she remained cheerful, meekly accepted her fate, and offered up her suffering to God. Brennan was deeply impressed by her faith and visited her daily.[2] While dying, Richard prayed for other individuals to be healed or to be converted to Catholicism. The Director of Pediatrics at the hospital, Theresita Crowley, a , also witnessed her calm acceptance of suffering and prayers for others. Brennan and Crowley claimed that those for whom Richard prayed recovered from their illnesses or became Catholic.[1] Richard died on 11 August 1959 and was buried in Richard, Louisiana.

Before her death Brennan and Crowley began telling people about Richard and Richard's family became aware that there was a be- lief that she was "special." Floyd Calais, a Catholic priest who was at the time the chaplain of Charity Hospital in Lafayette, was a close friend of Brennan. In 1961, Calais began praying to Richard to be assigned to a parish.[8] He was assigned to St. Edwards par- ish in Richard, Louisiana—Richard's burial place—that same year. Once there, he discovered the need to raise money to build a new church there. Calais says that he was "invited to retreats and recollections, and began speaking about Charlene, how she achieved grace before she died" and about the need for money to build a new church in the parish. "People started going to her grave," he said, "and began sending checks to build the church. What I thought would take 8–10 years took 2 1/2.

As early as the late 1960s and by 1972 at the latest, prayer cards marked "For Private Devotion only" with a photograph of Richard, a prayer to her, and a prayer for her canonization were in circulation and xerographic copies were frequently being sent to individuals in need of help. A 1975 series of articles about Richard in the newspaper of the Lafayette diocese spread the cult and were republished in a booklet, "Charlene, A Saint from Southwest Louisiana", in 1979. Testimonials by individuals who believed that they had benefited by prayer to Richard were added and the booklet was again republished in 1988. Widespread belief formed in the area that Richard would intercede in heaven for people's prayers to be answered.

By 1989, the belief had spread outside the Cajun area. Hundreds of people were visiting Richard's grave each week, which had been illuminated so visits could occur in the evening and a box had been provided in which to leave written petitions to Richard. On the thirtieth anniversary of her death that year, an outdoor Mass was held there which was attended by four thousand people and which was covered by Louisiana television stations and the Cable News Network, and was reported in newspapers in Louisiana, , , , Orlando, Albany, and Seattle. The media coverage resulted in knowledge of Richard spreading world-wide, with interest in her expressed in Yugoslavia, Croatia, Australia, and Africa. Approximately a thousand people attended anniversary masses there in both 1991 and 1999, with about 400 attending in 2007, and thousands come to her grave each year, including chartered buses from .

Though no official canonization procedures had begun for Richard, the Diocese of Lafayette began collecting in 1991 testimonials about reputed help obtained through her. Unlike the traditional support for canonization of a saint, which begins with popular devotion and is only later recognized by the church, support for Richard began outside her immediate home area and was first promoted by the clergy, beginning with Brennan, Crowley, and Calais. The bishop of the Lafayette diocese at the time of her death, , visited her grave multiple times and referred to her as a saint. Another bishop of the diocese, Harry Flynn, presided at the thirtieth anniversary mass in 1989, along with sixteen other priests. The diocese also approved the creation of a private organiza- tion, the Friends of Charlene, to spread her story.[15]

NOVENA TO ST. ANNE

PRAYER TO SAINT ANNE

O glorious Saint Anne, You are filled with compassion for those who invoke you, and with love for those who suffer. Heavily burdened with the weight of my troubles, I cast myself at your feet and humbly beg of you to take the present intention, which I recommend to you in your special care. Please recommend it to your daughter, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and place it before the throne of Jesus, so that he may bring it to a happy issue. Continue to intercede for me until my request is granted. But above all obtain for me the grace one day to see my God face to face, and with you and Mary and all the saints to praise and bless him for all eternity. Amen.

Our Father; Hail Mary; Glory be.

Saint Anne, help me now and at the hour of my death! Good Saint Anne, intercede for me!

FIRST DAY (July 17th) Dear Saint Anne, I appeal to you and place myself under your great motherly care as I begin this no- vena in your honor. Please listen to my prayers and requests. Help me, also, to begin this time of prayer with a heart open to the loving grace of God. Give me the strength to begin a new life that will last forever. Finally, blessed Saint Anne, I ask you to recommend me to your daughter, the most holy Virgin Mary. Through her, may I receive the spirit of prayer, humility, and the love of God.

(Recite the Prayer to Saint Anne above, followed by the Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be, and the invocation to Saint Anne.)

SECOND DAY (July 18th) From the depths of my heart, good Saint Anne, I offer you my homage and I ask you to shelter me under the mantle of your motherly care. Help me to purify my thoughts and desires. Aid my decisions that all that I do may be done in love.

THIRD DAY (July 19th) Good Saint Anne, you were the first to respond to the needs of Mary, the mother of our Savior. You watched over her in her infancy, presented her at the temple, and consecrated her to the service of God. By the great power God has given you, show yourself to be my mother and consoler. Help me dedi- cate myself to God and to my neighbors. Console me in my trials and strengthen me in my struggles.

FOURTH DAY (July 20th) Good Saint Anne, you offered your daughter in the temple with faith, piety, and love. With the happi- ness which then filled your heart, help me to present myself to God and to the world as a committed disciple of Jesus. Take me under your protection. Strengthen me in my temptations. Show yourself to be a mother and help me to live a life of holiness and love.

FIFTH DAY (July 21st) Good Saint Anne, by God’s special favor, grant consolation to us who invoke you. Help us to grow in spiritual wealth for the life to come, and guide us in our temporal affairs as well. Grant us the gift of continuous conversion and renewal of heart. Help us to accept the Gospel of Je- sus over and over again so that we may be ready to be true disciples in whatever situations we may experience during our lives.

SIXTH DAY (July 22nd) Good Saint Anne, free my heart of pride, vanity, and self-love. Help me to know myself as I really am, and to learn meekness and simplicity of heart. I realize God’s great love for me. Help me to reflect this love through works of mercy and charity to- ward my neighbor.

SEVENTH DAY (July 23rd) Good Saint Anne, by the power and grace God has placed in you, extend to me your helping hand. Renew my mind and heart. I have unbounded confidence in your prayers. Direct my actions according to your goodness and wisdom. I place myself under your motherly care. Pray that I may receive the grace to lead a devout life on earth, and that I may obtain the everlasting reward of heaven.

EIGHTH DAY (July 24th) Saint Anne, you gave birth to Mary, whose divine Son brought forth salvation to our world by con- quering death and restoring hope to all people. Help me to pray to him who, for love of us, clothed himself with human flesh. May I be guided from anything that is displeasing in the sight of God. Pray that the Spirit of Jesus may enlighten and direct me in all I do. Good Saint Anne, keep a watchful eye on me. Help me bear all my crosses and sustain me with courage.

NINTH DAY (July 25th) Good Saint Anne, I have come to the end of this novena in your honor. Do not let your kind ear grow weary of my prayers, though I repeat them so often. Implore for me from God’s providence all the help I need to get through life. May your generous hand bestow on me the material means to satisfy my needs and to alleviate the plight of the poor. Good Saint Anne, pray that I may praise and thank the Holy Trinity for all eternity.
