Brookfield Submitted to the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics on May 17, 1993 in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Aeronautics and Astronautics Abstract An analytical and computational study was performed to examine the effects of adverse pressure gradients on confined vortical motions representative of those encountered in compressor clearance flows. The study included exploring the parametric dependence of vortex core size and blockage, as well as designing an experimental configuration to examine this phenomena in a controlled manner. Two approaches were used to assess the flows of interest. A one-dimensional analysis was developed to evaluate the parametric dependence of vortex core expansion in a diffusing duct as a function of core to diffuser radius ratio, axial velocity ratio (core to outer flow) and swirl ratio (tangential to axial velocity at the core edge) at the inlet. It was found that a critical swirl ratio exists, above which core expansion and total pressure losses were large. Tip clearance flow in a curved, diffusing duct designed to simulate a turbomachine blade passage was examined using a three-dimensional Navier-Stokes code. Both overall behavior, such as pressure rise, and more detailed aspects (e.g. clearance vortex trajectory) were investigated. Over the range of parameters evaluated, the blockage of the clearance flow increased linearly with pressure gradient. The combined results of the one- dimensional analysis and the computational simulation suggest that the abrupt expansion of the vortex core which is associated with the phenomenon of vortex breakdown is unlikely in turbomachine compressors.     Chapter 7 Isopycnal and Isentropic Coordinates The two-dimensional shallow water model can carry us only so far in geophysical uid dynam- ics. In this chapter we begin to investigate fully three-dimensional phenomena in geophysical uids using a type of model which builds on the insights obtained using the shallow water model. This is done by treating a three-dimensional uid as a stack of layers, each of con- stant density (the ocean) or constant potential temperature (the atmosphere). Equations similar to the shallow water equations apply to each layer, and the layer variable (density or potential temperature) becomes the vertical coordinate of the model. This is feasible because the requirement of convective stability requires this variable to be monotonic with geometric height, decreasing with height in the case of water density in the ocean, and increasing with height with potential temperature in the atmosphere. As long as the slope of model layers remains small compared to unity, the coordinate axes remain close enough to orthogonal to ignore the complex correction terms which otherwise appear in non-orthogonal coordinate systems. 7.1 Isopycnal model for the ocean The word isopycnal means constant density. Recall that an assumption behind the shallow water equations is that the water have uniform density. For layered models of a three- dimensional, incompressible uid, we similarly assume that each layer is of uniform density.     Air Pressure We know that standard atmospheric pressure is 14.7 pounds per square inch. We also know that air pressure decreases as we rise in the atmosphere. 1013.25 mb = 101.325 kPa = 29.92 inches Hg = 14.7 pounds per in 2 = 760 mm of Hg = 34 feet of water Air pressure can simply be measured with a barometer by measuring how the level of a liquid changes due to different weather conditions. This bellows-like chamber responds to air pressure so it can be used to measure atmospheric pressure. Simply put, we care about stability because it exerts a strong control on vertical motion – namely, ascent – and thus cloud and precipitation formation on the synoptic-scale or otherwise. We care about stability because rarely is the atmosphere ever absolutely stable or absolutely unstable, and thus we need to understand under what conditions the atmosphere is stable or unstable. We care about stability because the purpose of instability is to restore stability; atmospheric processes such as latent heat release act to consume the energy provided in the presence of instability. Before we can assess stability, however, we must first introduce a few additional concepts that we will later find beneficial, particularly when evaluating stability using skew-T diagrams. Stability-Related Concepts Convection Condensation Level The convection condensation level, or CCL, is the height or isobaric level to which an air parcel, if sufficiently heated from below, will rise adiabatically until it becomes saturated. The attribute “if sufficiently heated from below” gives rise to the convection portion of the CCL. Sufficiently strong heating of the Earth’s surface results in dry convection, which generates localized thermals that act to vertically transport energy.

    Chapter 4 ATMOSPHERIC STABILITY Wildfires are greatly affected by atmospheric motion and the properties of the atmosphere that affect its motion. Most commonly considered in evaluating fire danger are surface winds with their attendant temperatures and humidities, as experienced in everyday living. Less obvious, but equally important, are vertical motions that influence wildfire in many ways. Atmospheric stability may either encourage or suppress vertical air motion. The heat of fire itself generates vertical motion, at least near the surface, but the convective circulation thus established is affected directly by the stability of the air. This often brings very dry air from high altitudes to low levels. If this reaches the surface, going wildfires tend to burn briskly, often as briskly at night as during the day. From these few examples, we can see that atmospheric stability is closely related to fire behavior, and that a general understanding of stability and its effects is necessary to the successful interpretation of fire-behavior phenomena.
