CBC | RADIO-CANADA ANNUAL REPORT 2008–2009 GREAT SUCCESSES. GREATER CHALLENGES. THIS Year WAS A paradoX. OUR CHALLENGE NOW IS TO ADAPT TO THE NEW FISCAL REALITIES FACING ALL BROADCASTERS. This year was a paradox. CBC | Radio-Canada achieved unprecedented success with audiences across all of our services. Yet we also faced unprecedented financial challenges that forced us to make substantial cuts to staff and programming. Our challenge now is to adapt to the new fiscal realities facing all broadcasters while protecting the investment Canadians have made in a strong, vibrant national public broadcaster. The difficult choices we have made are guided by a vision of what we need to be to remain relevant and indeed essential to our audiences. Stompin’ Grounds: Performing Country Music in Canada by Erin Jan Elizabeth Schuurs A Thesis presented to The University of Guelph In partial fulfilment of requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History Guelph, Ontario, Canada © Erin Jan Elizabeth Schuurs, September, 2019 Abstract STOMPIN’ GROUNDS: PERFORMING COUNTRY MUSIC IN CANADA Erin Jan Elizabeth Schuurs Advisor: University of Guelph, 2019 Dr. Catharine Anne Wilson Country music in Canada and its different geographical regions existed within a transnational set of fictions which were shared by a great many North Americans. Industry members, performers, and fans have relied upon the markers of sound, rurality, masculinity, and later “Canadian-ness” to prove the music’s “authenticity.” More than anything, what is noteworthy about country music is not that it is a continuation of “authentic” folk practices, but the music’s ability to continually reinvent itself while maintaining these fictions. By examining five distinct country music performers who had active careers in Canada – Wilf Carter, Earl Heywood, Don Messer, Stompin’ Tom Connors, and Gordon Lightfoot – this study examines how Canadian country music artists between the 1920s and the 1970s created “authentic” images. CBC/Radio-Canada Accountability Plan CBC/Radio-Canada Accountability Plan Further to the commitment set out in Budget 2016, CBC/Radio-Canada is pleased to share with you some of its plans for the Government’s reinvestment in the public broadcaster. CBC/Radio-Canada continues to transform the way it operates in order to ensure that public broadcasting, and the content Canadians enjoy, thrive in the digital age. It has been challenging, but that work is showing results. Canadians see it every day in the way they engage with us, and each other, on mobile devices, social networks, on television and radio. When we began Strategy 2020, more than half of Canadians told us that CBC/Radio-Canada was very important to them personally. By 2020, we want three out of every four Canadians to feel that way. We also want to increase our digital reach to 18 million Canadians – one out of two – by 2020. We are well on the way, with three million new digital users in the past year across CBC/Radio-Canada platforms, and an average of almost 15 million digital users per month in 2015-2016.(1) As we move ahead with the strategy, our goal is to make the public broadcaster more digital, more local and more ambitious in its Canadian programming, and in doing so increase our value to Canadians. 1 Source: comScore, multiplatform measurement, monthly average unique visitors. 1 CBC/Radio-Canada Accountability Plan Reinvesting in Public Broadcasting In Budget 2016, the government proposed to invest an additional $75M in CBC/Radio-Canada for 2016-2017, rising to $150M in the following years. -

CURATING CANADIANNESS: PUBLIC SERVICE BROADCASTING, FUSION PROGRAMMING, AND HIERARCHIES OF DIFFERENCE by © Rebecca Draisey-Collishaw A dissertation submitted to the School of Graduate Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, Ethnomusicology Memorial University of Newfoundland October 2017 St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador ABSTRACT “Fusion programming” is an approach to music broadcasting that was employed by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) during the early years of the twenty-first century. It’s understandable as a response to systemic and systematic pressure to be “more multicultural.” It was about the artistry of musicians and entertainment of audiences, but fusion programming also served a didactic purpose for producers and listeners, participating in the production, elaboration, reinforcement, and/or deconstruction of existing cultural systems. Producing fusion programming involved bringing a minimum of two musicians/musical groups from different genres, languages, styles, scenes, and cultures into the same CBC-sponsored venue for the expressed purpose of performing together and discussing the challenges of collaboration. Performances, in many cases, were posited as “multicultural,” “cross cultural,” or “a collision of cultures,” and conversations framing the music often referenced diversity, multiculturalism, and difference, effectively mapping musicians’ positionality within Canadian society and geography. Déjà nous avons pu constater avec quelle efficacité les forces à l’œuvre dans l’univers numérique peuvent éroder la place qu’occupent l’information et les nouvelles d’origine canadienne – ingrédients essentiels à la santé de la démocratie. Devant l’hégémonie du diver- tissement mondialisé, les histoires et les points de vue qui nous définissent risquent de se noyer dans la masse. Le pouvoir économique des puissances étrangères dans l’espace numérique sape les efforts pour financer et préserver la culture canadienne. À titre de diffuseur public, nous sommes éminemment préoccupés par la santé du système de radiodiffusion et sa capacité à répondre aux besoins des Canadiens. Nous craignons également de ne plus pouvoir soutenir et promouvoir la culture canadienne comme il nous incombe. Pour ces raisons, nous croyons qu’il est essentiel de renforcer la radiodiffusion publique pour assurer le dynamisme de la culture et de la démocratie canadiennes.
