The content - the Faith and the patron saint - is more important than the fraternal society. The logo becomes more easily readable due to the difference in grey tones. Carmel “What’s that thing you’re always wearing?” And so began another discussion of the Brown Scapular that hangs around my neck. This time it was while visiting New Orleans with my sister. A city suffused with Catholicism plus voodoo shops, gris-gris and the like was, perhaps, the perfect place to explain the two small pieces of brown wool on a cord that I always wear. The Brown Scapular is neither a good luck charm, talisman, amulet nor gris-gris. It is a sacramental; a symbol of devotion and yoke of obedience to Our Lady of Mount Carmel whose feast we celebrate on July 16. Simply put, in the words of the always humorously orthodox John Zmirak, the Brown Scapular is “a sleek and minimalist version of the Carmelite habit.” 1.

Cantilena and Antiphon: Music for Marian Services in Late Medieval England By Peter M. Lefferts One of the most important contributions to studies of medieval music in recent years was made by Ernest Sanders as editor of volume two of English Music for Mass and Offices (volume XVII in the series Polyphonic Music of the Fourteenth Century).1 Sanders was particularly responsible for the editions of a large proportion of the surviving repertoire of poly phonic cantilenas, a major genre in terms of numbers of pieces and inherent musical value that heretofore has received little attention in the musicological literature, aside from Sanders's own contributions.2 The cantilena holds a place in the fourteeth-century English polyphonic repertoire roughly equivalent to that of the votive antiphon in the fifteenth century, though it is a much less familiar and less widely traveled genre. Stylistically, cantilenas form a complex category of works, but one that has nonetheless a clearly defined core. The archetypal cantilena is a three-voice piece freely composed in three or four large sections, setting regularly versified, double-versicle texts of uniform stanzaic structure in a 1 Editions de L'Oiseau-Lyre has published four volumes of English music in its series Polyphonic Music of the Fourteenth Century (hereinafter "PMFC"). They are as follows: English Music of the Thirteenth and Early Fourteenth Centuries, ed. Ernest H. The time is one of the greatest gifts of God to the universe. We all have a moment of our birth as well as the moment of our death. Both of these moments are very important to us and so we as believers take both life and death as celebration sharing the life of God who is the source and summit of our living. Time has a great value in the economy of salvation of the humankind. According to the first creation story mentioned in the book of Genesis, God created human person on the sixth day. (cf. Gen 1.27, 31) Gradually the plan of salvation evolves as the chosen people are led to the Promised Land through the instrumentality of judges, kings and prophets called to live in a particular time of history.
