SALE HEADLINES WWW.FTBOA.COM Global Market The OBS August Yearling Sale, which gets rolling with today’s select session at 1 p.m., boasts graduates that continue to win some of the world’s most important stakes races By MICHAEL COMPTON The OBS August Yearling Sale has a history bursting with stakes winners at the highest levels dating back to the likes of Groovy and Florida-bred classic winner Silver Charm. Graduates of the sale have won major races across the country, in Dubai and at Royal Ascot, es- calating the August Sale from its regional roots to a global marketplace. This year’s renewal kicks off today with a selected session at 1 p.m. OBS set the later start to afford horsemen additional travel time to Ocala following weekend stakes races and to provide a longer in- spection period prior to the sale. The select session is followed by two open sessions on Wednesday and Thursday that begin at 10:30 a.m. A total of 751 yearlings have been cataloged for the entire sale with 188 head offered in the opening select session. The August Yearling Sale follows on the heels of a record-setting juvenile sale season for OBS. “The juvenile sales went very well,” said Tom Ventura, OBS president. “Success like that certainly helps the pinhookers. Since a portion of these yearlings will go to pinhookers, I expect they will be active this week.” See on page 2 CINDY MIKELL PHOTO OBS August WWW.FTBOA.COM • TUESDAY, AUGUST 21, 2012 • 2 www.facebook.com/thefloridahorse OBS August from page 1 Springs bought five for $204,000 in the select along with Candy Ride (ARG), Elusive Quality, session and haltered 14 for $256,000 to lead Pulpit, Hard Spun, Congrats and Afleet Alex. JIM MCCUE — ABOUT OUR JUDGE — Dale Romans Eclipse Award and classic-winning trainer Dale Romans has saddled the winners of nearly 2,000 races, for earnings just shy of $100 million, in his 30-year career, and his stable stars have included turf champion Kitten’s Joy, Preakness Stakes-G1 winner Shackleford, Dubai World Cup-G1 winner Roses in May, Breeders’ Cup winners Little Mike (2012 Turf), Court Vision (2011 Mile) and Tapitsfly (2009 Juvenile Fillies Turf), and Travers Stakes-G1 winner Keen Ice. Licensed as a trainer since age 18, he saddled his first winner Feb. 1, 1987, at Turfway Park with a filly he bought for $1,500. BIO Dale L. Romans Born in Louisville, Kentucky, Romans has earned a place amongst the nation’s top trainers. Growing up at Churchill Downs, he began training horses at the young age of 18 and quickly became a sensation. Romans has collected over 1,800 wins and nearly $94 million in total earnings. He is best known for his 2011 Preakness Stakes victory from Shakelford, and his 2015 Travers Stakes upset of American Pharoah with Keen Ice. Romans has also won three Breeders’ Cup events and a Dubai World Cup in 2005. Romans has also presided over Keen Ice, First Dude, Nolan’s Cat and Medal Count who have all finished third at the Belmont Stakes. He was awarded an Eclipse Award for Outstanding Trainer in 2012. He pointed Unbridled Outlaw, Cherry Wine and Brody’s Cause down the 2016 Kentucky Derby trail. A licensed trainer since age 18, Dale Romans saddled his first winner on February 15, 1987, at Turfway Park. The son of trainer Jerry Romans, a leading trainer at Turfway and twice leader at Ellis Park, Dale began working in his father's stable from literally the time he could walk. Romans also worked briefly for Hall of Fame trainer Woody Stephens. On May 30, 2003, Romans reached an impressive, although perhaps bittersweet, milestone: recording his 200th win at Churchill Downs, which just so happened to move Romans past his late father on Churchill's all-time victory list. Among his most successful horses, Kitten's Joy won the Grade I Secretariat Stakes and the Grade I Joe Hirsch Turf Classic Invitational in 2004.
