COLUMBIA SAILING CLUB MARCH, 2014 the Telltale Y-Flyers Kick Off 2014 Regatta Season at Columbia Sailing Club by Amber Parsha The 2014 Y-Flyer Midwinters were held on February 28- March 2. There were a total of 14 boats that came out to race. Friday night dinner was Jambalaya and was prepared by Drew Daughetry, a sailor from Little Rock, who enjoyed using our wonderful kitchen. Breakfast Saturday morning was the infamous Parshall Pancakes. After breakfast, the Regatta Chairwomen, Amber Parshall, PRO Dick Dommell, and the racers set out to the racecourse. One Windward-Leeward twice around was sailed and won by Drew and Evan Daugherty before the wind died and everyone went in for lunch and to wait for some breeze. Kim Milling and Rebecca Dotterer made fabulous tomatoes basil soup and sandwiches. Thankfully after lunch the wind came in for the sailors to get in one more race, which was won by Drew and Evan Daugherty again. Saturday night everyone enjoyed the fire out on the front porch, corn hole games, and margaritas served at the lightning bar. Kim Milling prepared dinner, which consisted of chicken, baby carrots, and rice. Sunday morning started with the Race Committee leaving the dock followed by no sailboats. There was no wind what so ever. Thankfully, the sun was out and the temperature was a lot warmer then Saturday so everyone gathered on the front porch to sit and wait on the wind. At around 10 am Dick Dommell found enough wind to get one race in, which was won by Mark and Jill Barton of Little Rock. After the sailors hauled their boats out of the water and got everything packed away, they enjoyed the famous CSCA burgers. The awards presentation began with Commodore Beth thanking everyone for coming and helping out, followed by Amber Parshall, the Regatta Chairwomen, to hand out awards. The winner of the Blue Fleet was Alex and David Jones from Lake Norman. Third place was given to David and Amber Parshall, second place went to Mark and Jill Barton and Drew and Evan Daugherty won first place. Trophies were beautiful white and blue embroidered beach towels that all seemed to be thrilled to receive. Overall it was a great regatta and fun was had by all. I would like to personally thank everyone who helped make this regatta possible! I had no idea coming into this event that so much goes on behind the scenes that most sailors do not know about. It was definitely a learning experience and one that I will never forget. All the help and support that I received really showed me how great our club really is! I would like to thank my family for helping out as much as they did that weekend- I love you all very much and am extremely thankful for all that you have done and continue to do. ! Welcome to Sailing Season!! Thank you to Amber Parshall and her Dad, David, for Chairing the recent Y-FLyer Regatta. It was a fun regatta and I know the sailors enjoyed their southern hospitality. Many members and nonmembers pitched in to help, and we appreciate each and every one of you! The J24 Easter Regatta is scheduled for April 18-20. Alex Bolan has been hard at work organizing this race which will include J24’s and Ultimate 20’s. Please give Alex a call if you can serve on RC or provide on-land help. Please remember, regattas help make ends meet by serving delicious meals. Please support your Club by attending regatta dinners and Auxiliary lunches. Also, Mike Brothers has been working on organizing instructors and registration for our upcoming Youth Sailing Camps. Give him a call if you would like to help. Our calendar is filling up with lots to do this Spring and Summer. Pat and Bill Freeman organized a wonderful, well-attended Grill your Own. Amber Parshall, as Entertainment Chair, is hosting a Margarita Party to help officially usher in Spring. Please come out and support Amber and have fun visiting with friends on the Porch. Work Day is Saturday, April 5. There will be a yellow notepad in the canteen this weekend for everyone to suggest work projects. We will be sprucing up the grounds and Clubhouse for Easter Regatta. I know for sure the Easter Bunny will need some help on work day. Pappadore Bill, with guidance from Mike , will be serving the dogs! FROM THE BOARD MEETING: Robert Key and Tommy Tapp have worked hard to get our insurance money and have obtained a contractor to repair the Bath House. Fred Piehl was granted approval to host a weekend sailing clinic this spring/summer for a small group of his orthopedically handicapped patients. More to come on this exciting outreach. FROM LMYRA: Congratulations to Ms. Jesse Helms, along with her late husband Jack, on being inducted into the The Lake Murray Sailing Hall of Fame . This award was to thank Ms. Jesse for their contributions to the sport of sailing and their many years of promoting sailing on Lake Murray.
