COLUMBIA CLUBMARCH, 2014 the Telltale Y-Flyers Kick Off 2014 Regatta Season at Columbia Sailing Club by Amber Parsha The 2014 Y-Flyer Midwinters were held on February 28- March 2. There were a total of 14 boats that came out to race. Friday night dinner was Jambalaya and was prepared by Drew Daughetry, a sailor from Little Rock, who enjoyed using our wonderful kitchen. Breakfast Saturday morning was the infamous Parshall Pancakes. After breakfast, the Regatta Chairwomen, Amber Parshall, PRO Dick Dommell, and the racers set out to the racecourse. One Windward-Leeward twice around was sailed and won by Drew and Evan Daugherty before the wind died and everyone went in for lunch and to wait for some breeze. Kim Milling and Rebecca Dotterer made fabulous tomatoes basil soup and sandwiches. Thankfully after lunch the wind came in for the sailors to get in one more race, which was won by Drew and Evan Daugherty again. Saturday night everyone enjoyed the fire out on the front porch, corn hole games, and margaritas served at the bar. Kim Milling prepared dinner, which consisted of chicken, baby carrots, and rice. Sunday morning started with the Race Committee leaving the dock followed by no . There was no wind what so ever. Thankfully, the sun was out and the temperature was a lot warmer then Saturday so everyone gathered on the front porch to sit and wait on the wind. At around 10 am Dick Dommell found enough wind to get one race in, which was won by Mark and Jill Barton of Little Rock. After the sailors hauled their boats out of the water and got everything packed away, they enjoyed the famous CSCA burgers. The awards presentation began with Commodore Beth thanking everyone for coming and helping out, followed by Amber Parshall, the Regatta Chairwomen, to hand out awards. The winner of the Blue Fleet was Alex and David Jones from Lake Norman. Third place was given to David and Amber Parshall, second place went to Mark and Jill Barton and Drew and Evan Daugherty won first place. Trophies were beautiful white and blue embroidered beach towels that all seemed to be thrilled to receive. Overall it was a great regatta and fun was had by all. I would like to personally thank everyone who helped make this regatta possible! I had no idea coming into this event that so much goes on behind the scenes that most sailors do not know about. It was definitely a learning experience and one that I will never forget. All the help and support that I received really showed me how great our club really is! I would like to thank my family for helping out as much as they did that weekend- I love you all very much and am extremely thankful for all that you have done and continue to do. ! Welcome to Sailing Season!! Thank you to Amber Parshall and her Dad, David, for Chairing the recent Y-FLyer Regatta. It was a fun regatta and I know the sailors enjoyed their southern hospitality. Many members and nonmembers pitched in to help, and we appreciate each and every one of you! The J24 Easter Regatta is scheduled for April 18-20. Alex Bolan has been hard at work organizing this race which will include J24’s and Ultimate 20’s. Please give Alex a call if you can serve on RC or provide on-land help. Please remember, regattas help make ends meet by serving delicious meals. Please support your Club by attending regatta dinners and Auxiliary lunches. Also, Mike Brothers has been working on organizing instructors and registration for our upcoming Youth Sailing Camps. Give him a call if you would like to help. Our calendar is filling up with lots to do this Spring and Summer. Pat and Bill Freeman organized a wonderful, well-attended Grill your Own. PAGE 2 COLUMBIA SAILING CLUBMARCH, 2014 CSC Auxiliary News by Kris Kenline, President

Writing this from Ohio where it is still pretty cold and snowing just a few days ago, I can’t wait to get back to Columbia where we hope spring is finally beginning. Even during the winter months, the Auxiliary has been pretty busy. Starting off, we want to thank Kim Milling for her excellent leadership in starting off the Y-Flyer Regatta Burger lunches for this year. She also had a major hand in the rest of the meals for the weekend as well. There are too many other members to list to thank for helping out to make this event successful. Right before Lent, the Auxiliary celebrated our annual Fat Tuesday Party at Alodia’s where it warm and cozy compared to the gray and cold outside. We had a great turnout and collected plenty of PJs for Sister Care. The following week we met for our monthly meeting and we were happy to see Nan Nussler up and about after her partial knee surgery. Beth reported that Monica Syzmanski was back at home. We are hoping to work with Steve to set up a schedule with our members so we can visit while he might get a little time to run errands out. I am asking all Auxiliary members to let me know if they can help out. We also would like to put some frozen meals together to help out with our recuperating members and family members. If any of you CSCA members would like to help out, please let me know at [email protected]. In the upcoming months, we have our monthly meeting on the second Tuesday. Again, we will be serving lunches at the Easter Regatta and helping out wherever needed including the annual Easter Egg Hunt. In May we will have the New Member Party headed up by Carolyn Tupper and Nancy Olmstead. In June we will be planning the Past Commodore/Presidents’ Party. In addition, we are considering another event with USC Chef Joel and a few field trips to local venues. Without my notes here, I am probably forgetting something important, but hope to keep seeing and informing everyone at the Club of all our activities. My best to everyone down there where hopefully it is a lot warmer than here (although I have to admit being with family is pretty warm even with the cold temperatures outside!). Kris

She has several great ideas for this upcoming year, which include a wine tasting, ice cream social, and a July Fourth Party that wi be hard to forget! What is it? An observant member was able to capture a quick snapshot of this visitor to the Club on a rainy afternoon. If anyone knows what this is, please let us know. Thanks to Gary Hodo for the alert response.

Billing Reminder Quarter 2 Invoices will be sent out no later than April 10. If you still receive your bill via US Mail and would like to get your bill electronically, send an email to our bookkeeper, Alecia Milling, at [email protected]

Gamecock Sailing Club Practicing at CSC You may have noticed our 420’s out sailing recently. We have agreed to let the USC Gamecock Sailing Club use our boats to get ready for a Regatta at Vanderbilt University. While this is only a temporary trial arrangement, this relationship could be very valuable for both CSC and the University. Please make our guests feel welcome if you see them on the property.

PAGE 4 COLUMBIA SAILING CLUBMARCH, 2014 Sailing News by Andrew Clarkson, Vice Commodore As was evidenced at the Y-Flyer Midwinters Regatta in early March, we’re having the usually entertaining weather these past several weeks - Copious amounts of sun accompanied by intermittent breeze and unpredictable temperatures. And while on the subject & before too much time has passed, I want to once again thank the Parshall Family (and I mean the entire family) - particularly Amber and her dad David. The Y-Flyer fleet seemed to really enjoy all the great events y’all put together. THANK YOU.

Like bees to pollen, the warmer air is slowly bringing our sailors back to the water. The LMYRA spring series is now in under full sail. And I expect the day sailors to take to the water very soon if not already.

As for this sailor, last weekend I pulled my from the water, cleaned the gunk off the bottom, and found two small blisters on the rudder needing modest repair. So she’s now getting an opportunity to sit on her trailer for a few weeks to thoroughly dry out then get a much needed coat of bottom paint. Fingers crossed we’ll in back in before Easter. Does anyone have a good/cheap source for Interlux Micron CSC Antifouling Bottom Paint? Wow, are you kidding me?

Youth Sailing Camps Coming to CSC in June

What a beautiful day for sailing. The temperatures were mild and the sun was shining. The only problem was that we had no wind. In life I guess you can’t have everything. ! Lordie, Lordie, Miss Claudie where did all the boats come from. We had 36 boats that showed up for the race on Saturday and two skippers on RC for a total of 38 boats. That was exactly 2/3s of the fleet. What an incredible turnout. B division took the honors for the best turnout with 11 of 13 boats showing up for the race, however division C was close behind with 10 of 13 boats and division A with 8 of 11 boats. If we continue to have great turnouts on race dates like this, the racing will be awesome. I get excited just thinking about it. Great Job. ! You may have noticed that C division has 6 San Juan 21s. They are now our largest one design fleet and every one of them showed up for the race. I need to thank Dick Dommel and Dave Mahrer for all the hard work they have done building the San Juan 21 fleet. Looks like I’ll need to find a few more J-24s or Catalina 25s to catch up with them. Thanks guys. I love to see one design fleets growing again. I would like to thank race committee for a valiant attempt to get a race in. PRO Wayne Hale, Frank Pierce, Ted Koberg and Matt O’Conner. Sometimes, it is just not meant to be no matter how hard we try. Good call abandoning the race. Our next race will be held on March 22. On that Saturday we will sail two buoy races. Let’s make plans to have another great turnout. I’ll make a decision later if we can make the race up at a later date or maybe change an island race to two buoy race. Just a thought. ! If you have not signed up for the LMYRA Spring Series, it is not too late. Just drop me a note and let me know you plan to sail in the spring series. You’ll still need to fill out a registrations form and make a check out to LMYRA. Go to LMYRA.org for a registration form. Just send registration form and check to Chuck Henderson or bring it to the race on March 22. Get excited about sailing and join the other sailors enjoying sailing on Lake Murray.
