12 Poultry Pluimvee Bulletin Broiler Industry REPORT

LEASE NOTE: As a result of SAPA re-addressing the industry broiler breeder standards as mentioned in earlier reports, the following was found: P• Monthly returns by day-old broiler chick producers indicate that at hatchery level the potential forecasted chick production, based on the number of day-old parent pullets placed, is not realised although the gap has closed considerably. • Broiler industry results from 2009 to 2013 have been revised. Hatchery returns of actual day-old broiler chicks placed and the projected broiler production based on these figures will be regarded as a true reflection of the industry performance.

he effect of high altitude on hatchability and chick quality depends largely on the altitude at which the hatching eggs are produced - and how the hatchery manager adjusts the incubation programme. TBarometric pressure declines with altitude, as does the partial pressure of oxygen and absolute humidity. Because molecules move more freely at lower density, the overall diffusion of oxygen, carbon dioxide and water molecules through the pores of the egg’s shell is increased.
