2 Sacred Heart Foundation LETTER FROM

When the Daughters of Charity broke ground on Pensacola’s original Sacred Heart Hospital in 1915, could theyCarol have realized the impact of the legacy they were creating? Today, we see people every day leaving a legacy of their own. Our volunteers do it with their time. Our physicians, nurses and staff do it with their compassion and expertise. Our donors do it through their contributions — helping us make necessary expansions and advances to give our patients the best possible care. If you’re reading this, you are part of our legacy. Your support is deeply appreciated by Wthose we help. I urge you to learn more about your impact. Within these pages, you’ll read about the day our Medical Director got the phone call every parent fears. When we say we want this kind of care for every child, we mean it. That’s the legacy we honor every day — for every patient. This year, we lost one of our longtime friends and supporters. In loving memory of Jane Kugelman, read how we’re keeping her legacy alive. As we near completion of The Studer Family Children’s Hospital at Sacred Heart and the completed expansion at Sacred Heart on the Emerald Coast, a new legacy is just beginning. Every donor makes a difference in the lives of every patient we serve. Thankyou for believing in us, too.

2018 ANNUAL REPORT 9 JANE KUGELMAN Keeping Jack’s Legacy Alive

10 Sacred Heart Foundation Jane Kugelman had a zest for life, laughter, friends — and an indomitable spirit. She survived cancer not once but three times and underwent six operations on her hip. Her life also revolved around loving her children and family, spending time with close friends and, of course, giving. She spent years carrying on the legacy of her late husband Jack Kugelman, who took over his family’s foundation and believed strongly in “helping a vast array of people be better off.” She instilled the value of giving and helping others to her four daughters, eight grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. JMy grandmother always told us, “If you’ve led a fulfilled life and you’re fortunate, you give to someone else in need,” says Jane Lauter, grandchild and current Chairman of the Kugelman Family Foundation of her late grandmother and grandfather. “Making a positive impact in our community was important to my late grandfather and grandmother. And it is a legacy we strive to carry on today.” Thanks to Jane and the Kugelman Family Foundation’s generosity over the years, The Studer Family Children’s Hospital is rising out of the ground, and with it, brighter futures for all of the children and families we serve. Jane once said, “I want our family to be a part of the future of Sacred Heart. I think that’s what our family, through the work of our foundation, is about — growing things in our community and making a positive impact. This children’s hospital will have a positive impact on the lives of many children and their families across our region for many years to come.” We will continue to by Jane Kugelman’s legacy and share her vision with generations of children and families in the care of The Studer Family Children’s Hospital. We will deeply miss her.

In loving memory of our longtime friend and supporter, Jane Kugelman.

When Kaden’s bellyache turned into a high fever, his worried mom rushed him to the Pediatric Emergency Room of The Studer Family Children’s Hospital at Sacred Heart. In just hours, Kaden was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia, a particularly challenging strain of leukemia that requires specialized clinicians, services and staff to deliver. Fortunately for Kaden, our hospital has a world-class team trained to care for his needs, a team headed by Dr. Debra Cohen, pediatric hematologist/oncologist with the University of Florida. Kaden received his first round of chemotherapy on Nov. 17, 2017. He stayed with us for 154 days. By his second round of chemo, his case had grown increasingly complex, and he was Wmoved to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit on Christmas Eve 2017. He and his family suffered a dizzying next few weeks, during which he was placed on a ventilator, underwent a tracheotomy, was treated for wound issues, began kidney dialysis and coded twice. HERE FOR HIM, EVERY STEP OF THE WAY Slowly, Kaden’s health began to rebound. Off the ventilator and no longer needing kidney dialysis, he missed home and Christmas. With a long hospital stay ahead, his care team — including his case manager, nurses, respiratory therapists and wound care team — connected with insurers, doctors, even ambulatory services, to get him home for a mini Christmas in April. Five hours later, he was back to his hospital room, spirits restored. “The staff here has been so awesome,” Rhonda said. “Kaden is such a complex patient, and everyone has really put their heads together to make sure he has the best care possible.” Kaden still has two more rounds of chemotherapy and a bone-marrow transplant to go through, but his mother remains optimistic. “There have been lots of ups and downs,” she admits. “But we are so thankful for this team. They treat Kaden like he is their kid, too. When I cry, I can see them holding back tears. They want to cry, too. We call them ‘Team Kaden.’ Plus, they take care of me, too.”

2018 ANNUAL REPORT 17 KATIE & SPROUT HAVE AN MRI

What do you do when your child is so terrified by the thought of the hospital that she won’t get out of the car? You enlist the help of Sprout the Service Dog at The Studer Family Children’s Hospital at Sacred Heart. Katie’s parents didn’t know what to do. The first time they tried to bring their daughter in for her MRI, they barely made it past the Wparking lot. Because of her autism, 19-year- old Katie has sensory and communication issues that make doctor visits and medical procedures a challenge. “The facility dog team had a full schedule during Katie’s first visit to the hospital, so sadly this resulted in a traumatic experience for the family that could have been prevented had there been more facility dogs available for service,” said Julia Humphries, a Child Life Specialist and Sprout’s primary handler. When the family met Julia, they hoped things would be different. They couldn’t have expected just how different their experience would be.
