We anticipate record breaking voter participation for this three-day early voting period and are pleased to announce that we will be partnering with the Tulsa Drillers to make ONEOK Field in downtown Tulsa as our chosen location for in-person early voting. The ONEOK Field location will enable Tulsa County voters to vote at a single, large, centrally located venue where our staff and resources can be combined to ensure the success of our early voting teams and to assist in the implementation of CDC guidelines that include adequate room for large crowds and social distancing, an open-air facility that helps prevent the spread of COVID, ADA compliant, has more available parking areas, is easily accessible by public transportation and is a well-known and familiar location. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to ONEOK Field management and the Tulsa Drillers team for offering the voters of Tulsa County use of their location for this event. We are encouraging voters to wear masks and social distance while voting. Because we will be utilizing all available staff members to facilitate early voting at one large site, the Tulsa County Election Board will not be available for early voting but will be open for other business including in-person absentee ballot drop-off. Absentee ballots cannot be dropped off at ONEOK Field. Please visit our website for further information on in-person early voting for October 29 th through the 31't, including a map of parking and public transportation locations near-by. Washington High School parade processes along Greenwood Avenue in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Greenwood Cultural Center NEWS IN BRIEF Unearthing the True Toll of the Tulsa Race Massacre With the 99th anniversary at hand, a community works with archaeologists to answer longstanding questions about a brutal tragedy. By Megan I. Gannon 22 MAY 2020 https://www.sapiens.org/news/tulsa-race-massacre/ 1/6 10/22/2020 Unearthing the True Toll of the Tulsa Race Massacre - SAPIENS MEGAN I. GANNON is a journalist based in Berlin, Germany. ust north of downtown Tulsa, Oklahoma, Greenwood once had one of the most successful African American commercial districts in the country. By 1921, it was home to numerous black-owned businesses— J beauty shops, grocery stores, restaurants, and the oces of lawyers, realtors, and doctors. Residents caught silent lms and musical performances at the Dreamland Theater. They could choose between two neighborhood newspapers. Greenwood oered a place to get bootleg liquor or attend church services. Although many people lived in the district’s spare wooden homes along unpaved streets, enough wealthy African American entrepreneurs called Greenwood home that it earned the nickname “Black Wall Street.” All of that changed on the night of May 31, 1921. White mobs, armed with shotguns and torches, terrorized Greenwood in a horric expression of racial violence. The attackers killed an unknown number as they reduced a vital neighborhood to ashes.
