JD Start D12-150 THREATENED SPECIES SCIENTIFIC COMMITTEE Established under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 The Minister approved this conservation advice and included this species in the Critically Endangered category, effective from 11/05/2018. Conservation Advice Eremophila sp. Narrow leaves (J. D. Start D12-150) Summary of assessment Conservation status Eremophila sp. Narrow leaves (J. D. Start D12-150) has been found to be eligible for listing in the Critically Endangered category as outlined in the attached assessment. Reason for conservation assessment by the Threatened Species Scientific Committee This advice follows assessment of information provided by Western Australia as part of the Common Assessment Method process, to systematically review species that are inconsistently listed under the EPBC Act and relevant state/territory legislation or lists. More information on the Common Assessment Method is available at: http://www.environment.gov.au/biodiversity/threatened/cam The information in this assessment has been compiled by the relevant state/territory government. In adopting this assessment under the EPBC Act, this document forms the Approved Conservation Advice for this species as required under s266B of the EPBC Act. Public consultation Notice of the proposed amendment and a consultation document was made available for public comment for 32 business days between 16 August 2017 and 29 September 2017. Any comments received that were relevant to the survival of the species were considered by the Committee as part of the assessment process. Recovery plan A recovery plan for this species under the EPBC Act is not recommended, because the Approved Conservation Advice provides sufficient direction to implement priority actions and mitigate against key threats. The relevant state/territory may decide to develop a plan under its equivalent legislation. Recommendations (i) The Committee recommends that the list referred to in section 178 of the EPBC Act be amended by including in the list in the Critically Endangered category: Eremophila sp. Eremophila experts Andrew Brown and Bob Chinnock have noted a number of morphological differences between Eremophila microtheca subsp. narrow leaves at Eneabba and the type of the species E. microtheca from east of Kalbarri. These include plant size, leaf length/shape, flower colour. In addition, molecular studies conducted in 2013 using nine microsatellite markers have shown plants in the Eneabba population to be genetically divergent from those found east of Kalbarri. Page 2 of 8 Brown considers the differences significant and has prepared a draft paper raising the phrase name Eremophila microtheca subsp. narrow leaves (J.D. Start D12-150) to species status. The taxon is now curated by the WA Herbarium as the phrase name Eremophila sp. Narrow leaves (J.D. Start D12-150). There are eight major conservation reserves which have 1559 taxa present in them. Most of the 574 unreserved taxa are wetland taxa, taxa of tropical affinities or those only present on the Acacia shrublands of the central basin. Vegetation patterning at a regional scale showed the major floristic boundary in the south west of the study area, which in turn reflected the major climatic gradients of the area. Brown et al, Eremophila subangustifolia (Scrophulariaceae), a rare new species 17 Nuytsia The journal of the Western Australian Herbarium 29: 17–20 Published online 22 March 2018 SHORT COMMUNICATION Eremophila subangustifolia (Scrophulariaceae), a rare new species from the Mid West Region of Western Australia, with notes on E. microtheca Eremophila microtheca (F.Muell. ex Benth.) F.Muell. was described as a species of Pholidia R.Br. by George Bentham in 1870 based on specimens collected at Port Gregory and the Murchison River by Augustus Oldfield, and was later placed in Eremophila R.Br. by Ferdinand von Mueller (1882). The species no longer appears to occur in the Port Gregory area (probably due to the clearing of its habitat) but is still known from populations east of Kalbarri. We have examined a photograph of the type of E. microtheca and consider the Kalbarri populations to be a good match for this species. Populations of plants determined to be a southern form of E. microtheca were subsequently found some 250 km to the south of Kalbarri near Eneabba. These plants differ in morphology from the type and were alluded to by Chinnock (2007) when he stated ‘The Kalbarri population differs from more southern ones in having flattened leaves’. In order to further ascertain the relationships of the two forms, a molecular study was conducted in 2013 using nine microsatellite markers. This study showed plants in the Eneabba populations to be genetically divergent from those found east of Kalbarri (Llorens et al. 2015). Plants in these two areas shared few alleles with one another and showed very high and significant values for measures of genetic differentiation (FST = 0.301 and 0.383; Dest = 0.756 and 0.774; P < 0.001).
