Dynamical interplay of the diverse european origins: Eastern (polish) Northern (norvegian and denisch), Southern (Italian) and western (German) linked in the contemporary jazz project. Acoustic purity of sound with slight electronic - effects based on the interplay of the solo - instruments (voice, horn and cello) and the piano–trio. C.E.A E n s e m b l e plays the original compositions of all the members arranged by the piano-player Antonio Zambrini. The band has a very specific and homogenic sound. Instrumental way of Integra- ting the voice in the arrangements and the strong international musical influences create the unique atmosphere and character of the compositions. The music of the ensemble shows the balance between the tasteful arrangements, dynamical interaction, wide space and dealing silence... The visual artwork delivered as a component to the conception the project intensi- fies the expression the entire athosphere. All the images were created to interact with the compositions. The idea of creating the C.E.A E n s e m b l e was initiated by the polish singer Sylwia Bialas and inspired by the long lasting musical friendships between her and the other band members of the project. S y l w i a B i a l a s (Poland/UK) - voice, composition „Bialas`flexible, changeable timbre and the instrumental approach to improvisation turns her voice into an adaptable, interactive and unique musical instrument. Her way of phrasing is very peculiar in both: soulful sung lyrics and the picturesque vocali- ses.“ Sylwia Bialas` music is essentially touched by styles like ECM and ethno . The strong influ- ence of the eastern culture is indispensably audible in her way of musical expression. „Mu- sic is my precious way of sharing, with both the musicians I`m honoured and happy to work with and with the audience...“ Till now she cooperated with artists like Andrea Centazzo (It/USA), Peter Phippen (U- SA),Asaf Sirkis (ISR/UK), Frank Harrison (UK), Patrick Bettison (USA) Tim Garland (UK), Asaf Sirkis(ISR/UK) Michael Wollny (Germ), Adrian Mears (Austral.), Zbigniew Lewandowski (Pol), Stephan Schmolck (Germ), Marcus Schieferdecker (Germ), Band "The shin" (Georgia), Hubert Winter, Rudi Engel (Germ), Jeffrey Chin(USA), Russ Spiegel (USA), Roine Sangenberg (SWE) and many other great musical personalities. Sylwia Bialas was a member and initiator of various International Music & Art projects as well as the diverse bands touring in Germany, Poland Italy and Scandinavia. Her recent projects: The Sirkis/Bialas International Quartet (UK), Sylwia Bialas Quartet, Deep Endeavour (scandinavian art project). Sylwia Bialas did recordings for the soundtracks: "Krabat", 20th Century Fox, "Paradies auf Erden" for the German Art TV channel. Singer in the theater production "Lucifer`s Mat- ches" (Germany). Co-founder of the jazz label Inner Ear, along with his brother Roger. www.innerear.no, http://www.torejazz.no J ö r g B r i n k m a n n (Germany) - violoncello , composition This exciting avant -garde cellist expands the boundaries of the violoncello in his very own way to great, astounding effect. He found an unmistakably specific style with his unique approach using different playing- techniques unusual and unheard of for his instrument. These techniques ranging from guitar inspired to a groove orientated Bass playing encompassing Upright and Electric bass, combined with the tasteful use of electronics made him emerge into a multifaceted player in a number of highly regarded, successful and stylistically different bands and productions. Brinkmann won several classical and jazz-concours. He is part of jazz groups, chamber ensembles, crossover theater, dance-productions, also frequently requested for pop. He has been invited to play concert halls and festivals all o- ver the world. Jörg Brinkmann has released over 15 records on various well known international music labels like ACT-Music, Jazzsick and Challenge Records. His musical character is faithfully expressed in his own trio (JÖRG BRINKMANN TRIO) with pianist Oliver Maas and drummer Dirk-Peter Kölsch, with whom he recorded the album Ha! for german label ACT-MUSIC, and in the trio „OLIVER´S CINEMA“ with trumpet player Eric Vloeimans and Accordionist Tuur Florizoone. (Challenge Records) In addition, he works with great musicians like Michael Schiefel (PLATYPUS TRIO-BMC RECORDS) or Claudio Puntin (TRIO DOLCE VITA). „All About Jazz“ says: „He creates a multifaceted stylistic approach, comfortably assuming the role of bassist with the kind of groove that would be unexpected from a classically trained cellist, were it not for his extensive, genre-rich resumé. Represents the viewpoint that jazz tradition is but one aspect of contemporary improvised music.“ A n t o n i o Z a m b r i n i (Italy) - piano, comp., arrangement Jazz piano player and composer from Milan. Antonio Zambrini has drawn attention of the- critics and musicians especially with his “songs”and several trio and quartet recordings. He`s compositions had been reprised and played by various musicians of the jazz scene. The Trumpet - player and composer Ron Horton hosted Zambrini on his CD “It’s a gadget world” , recorded in New York in 2006, recording some Zambrini`s compositions. Stefano Bollani, the italian piano player has opened his solo album with Zambrini`s com- position produced by ECM, the famous German label, issued on 2006. Mr. Lee Konitz himself recorded a series of Zambrini’s tunes in a sequence of three cds they realized together for label “Phillogy” in 2008 English pianist John Law simply dedicated his cd “The moment”, in 2002 to Zambrini’s mu- sic. Zambrini was a guest in several broadcastings by national Radios. He was for 7 years partner of Cineteca Italiana, Milan, improvising at the piano live so- norization of silent movies. Among others, Antonio Zambrini performed with Lee Konitz, Mark Murphy , William Par- ker, Tiziana Ghiglioni, Enrico Rava, Ron Horton, Nenna Frenlone, Hamid Drake, Claudio Fasoli, Tiziano Tononi, Ben Allison, Gabriele Mirabassi, Kyle Gregory, Rita Marcotulli, Ja- vier Girotto, Eliot Zigmund… J e s p e r B o d i l s e n (Denmark) - db b a s s, composition “Like NHOP, Bodilsen possesses a warm sound, great dexterity, virtually faultless intonation and an aura of calm even in the midst of volcanic eruptions. He is a lyrical player whose supple lines unfold with ease” (JAZZTIMES, US) The Danish bass player, composer, producer and educator Jesper Bodilsen was born Ja- nuary 5th 1970 in Haslev, Denmark. While studying at the school in Aarhus Bodilsen also worked as a professional musician. In June 1994 he was asked to perform at two All Star Concerts at the Riverboat Jazz Festival together with American drummer Ed Thigpen and pianist Duke Jordan. These concerts was a kind of breakthrough for Bodilsen and in the years to come he was peforming with other great jazz artists like James Moody, Benny Golson, Lee Konitz, Tom Harrell, Joe Lovano, Horace Parlan, Jimmy Heath and Phil Woods. Often at the legendary jazz club BENT J in Aarhus. In 1995 Bodilsen moved to Copenhagen and he was immediately asked to join the Erling Kroner Dream Quartet. He was touring with different Aarhus and Copenhagen based bands in the years to come when he in 1997 met Ed Thigpen again. Ed Thigpen wanted him in his trio and together with pianist Carsten Dahl the trio recorded their first album “It´s Entertainment” in 1998. The album was nominated for a Danish Grammy and won the JazzSpecial Prize “Album Of The Year”.

  • Discourses of Decay and Purity in a Globalised Jazz World
1 Chapter Seven Cold Commodities: Discourses of Decay and Purity in a Globalised Jazz World Haftor Medbøe Since gaining prominence in public consciousness as a distinct genre in early 20th Century USA, jazz has become a music of global reach (Atkins, 2003). Coinciding with emerging mass dissemination technologies of the period, jazz spread throughout Europe and beyond via gramophone recordings, radio broadcasts and the Hollywood film industry. America’s involvement in the two World Wars, and the subsequent $13 billion Marshall Plan to rebuild Europe as a unified, and US friendly, trading zone further reinforced the proliferation of the new genre (McGregor, 2016; Paterson et al., 2013). The imposition of US trade and cultural products posed formidable challenges to the European identities, rooted as they were in 18th-Century national romanticism. Commercialised cultural representations of the ‘American dream’ captured the imaginations of Europe’s youth and represented a welcome antidote to post-war austerity. This chapter seeks to problematise the historiography and contemporary representations of jazz in the Nordic region, with particular focus on the production and reception of jazz from Norway. Accepted histories of jazz in Europe point to a period of adulatory imitation of American masters, leading to one of cultural awakening in which jazz was reimagined through a localised lens, and given a ‘national voice’. Evidence of this process of acculturation and reimagining is arguably nowhere more evident than in the canon of what has come to be received as the Nordic tone. In the early 1970s, a group of Norwegian musicians, including saxophonist Jan Garbarek (b.1947), guitarist Terje Rypdal (b.1947), bassist Arild Andersen (b.1945), drummer Jon Christensen (b.1943) and others, abstracted more literal jazz inflected reinterpretations of Scandinavian folk songs by Nordic forebears including pianist Jan Johansson (1931-1968), saxophonist Lars Gullin (1928-1976) bassist Georg Riedel (b.1934) (McEachrane 2014, pp.

  • John Kelman All About Jazz
Live at Belleville Arild Andersen | ECM Records (2008) By John Kelman The general international perception of Norway's jazz scene as "Nordic Cool," is, like most generalizations, inevitably distanced from truth. Atomic, The Coreand Motif may possess no shortage of heat, but ECM has undeniably helped define that unmistakable Norwegian aesthetic. One of the "big four," brought to international attention in the early 1970s alongside guitarist Terje Rypdal, saxophonist Jan Garbarek, and drummer Jon Christensen, bassist Arild Andersen's ECM releases have largely avoided the kind of burning improvisational energy of his powerful trio disc Triptykon (1973), with Garbarek and Finnish drummer Edward Vesala. Live at Belleville—Andersen's first live album for ECM since his equally potent but stylistically different Molde Concert (1982)—recalls Triptykon's fiery intensity, but also reflects the same assimilation of traditional Norwegian music of albums including Sagn (1991). Live at Belleville is, like Triptykon, a trio date, featuring expat Italian drummer Paolo Vinaccia and Scottish saxophonist Tommy Smith. Andersen couldn't have made better choices. When Smith graduated from Berklee College of Music in the 1980s, his sound was a cogent combination of Jan Garbarek's biting tone and Michael Brecker's Americanized soulfulness. Since then his voice has become his own, but Garbarek and Brecker still loom and, while Garbarek's Mai Jazz 2008performance in Stavanger, Norway made clear he's still capable of edgy spontaneity, Smith has stayed more clearly within definable jazz borders, playing with a stunning combination of measured lyricism and inspired improvisational abandon. Vinaccia, a Norwegian resident for over 20 years, works regularly with Andersen and Rypdal, heard on the bassist's Electra (ECM, 2005) and guitarist's Vossabrygg(ECM, 2006).

  • Jon Balke Book of Velocities
ECM Jon Balke Book of Velocities Jon Balke: piano ECM 2010 CD 6025 173 2765 (8) Release: October 23rd, 2007 The cover photo of “Book of Velocities” was taken by Jon Balke from a moving car. “I like to test-listen to music while driving, and the camera was on the seat beside me. All I had to do was to grab it and shoot wildly, without looking at or through the camera. Next time I adjusted the programming of the camera for better results, and the time after that I understood more of the way light became graphic. And so a series of velocity pictures evolved.” As in photography, so in music on Balke’s first solo piano recording, a remarkable ‘book’ of 19 short pieces, grouped into four chapters and an epilogue. Music composed and developed, invented and improvised: exploring a whole vocabulary of ideas, techniques, rhythms, textures and sound-colours. The approach: the pianist sketches an idea at the piano, quite spontaneously, waits a few seconds and develops the idea through a series of takes – and then moves on to a new ‘chapter’. Balke calls it “a process of understanding by doing and not by pre-conceived ideas.” The outcome is also a result of the room, hour of the day, the piano, the light and so on.” Speed is part of the process: “Piano playing is in fact mainly about velocity. There is no more information going through the mechanics when a note is struck, than the sheer force of your finger hitting the ebony and ivory.
