Bird’s Eye View with Fr. Pellican F . P
As a child, I always found the Ascension puzzling. One of my favorite Bible quotes comes from the end of Matthew’s Gospel, when He is standing on the mountain and tells His disciples: “I am with you always, ay t ar s t e to the close of the t year age” (28:20). It’s a beautiful Fr. Paul’s Priestly promise of Jesus’ continued presence with us; He will r i ati . never abandon you or me. But immediately after this ay ti ue t beautiful promise, Jesus ascends into heaven, and is less y u hidden by a cloud. Is Jesus going back on His word, i y ur leaving earth the moment He promises to remain ati a ay always? Of course not! He remains with us in so many t e ly irit e ways. He is present through other people, who become His y ur ui i li t. hands and feet in the world as St. Teresa of Avila reminds us. He is present in His Word. He is present, truly present, above all in the Eucharist. But why did He ‘have’ to return to heaven at all? Why didn’t He remain here on earth in His glorified body, as He was for forty days after His Resurrection? He ‘had’ to Corpus Christi ascend to His Father because that is where He belongs. His home is in heaven, not here on earth. He came down Eucharistic Procession on a mission, to redeem humanity, but this world was not His final destination. Jesus’ ascending into heaven serves Sunday, June 6, 2021 as a reminder to us as well. Like Jesus our home, our Church of the Divine Child ultimate destination, is heaven. If we view our lives through the eyes of faith, we come to know that we are Feast of Corpus Christi pilgrims, following in the footsteps of Jesus as we journey to the Father. May we always keep that goal in mind! Following the While still here on earth, Jesus told His disciples that in 12:30 pm Mass His Father’s house there are many rooms, and that He was going to prepare a place for them there (Jn 14:1). Please join us as we walk together To all the DC graduates, congratulations! It’s through the neighborhood singing been a challenging year, but I know you leave here with great memories, strong friendships, and a firm foundation in praises and giving glory to God on this your faith.
