Bill McKibben: Meeting Power with Power resh from participating in the People’s Cli- Fmate March in , Bill McKibben, author and environmentalist, is overwhelmed by the energy of the more than 300,000 people who showed up to voice their support for measures to contain climate change. “The ranks of people just kept coming…” he says. “It’s amazing to see, finally, people able to overcome their dread and take a stand.” He will bring that energy with him to Edinboro University Oct. 2, when he presents “Can We Still Fight Climate Change? Lessons from the Front Lines," as part of the University’s homecoming weekend activities. The presentation is free and open to the public. An author of 14 books about the environment, McKibben has been called by Time Magazine “the planet’s best green journalist,” and is considered by the Globe to be “probably the country’s most important environmentalist.” His book, The End of Nature, which was published in 1989, is considered the first book on climate change for 977 HOTSHOT a general audience. He is founder of the plan- et-wide grassroots climate change movement, 350.org, the primary organizer of the Peo- ple’s Climate March. McKibben founded 350.org because he thinks that people working together every day in every corner of the globe is vital to making things happen in a meaningful way. Through this organization, he and his colleagues also wanted to prove that the stereotype of an en- vironmentalist as a rich, white person was false. Through 350.org, millions of people of all colors, faith, and socio-economic standing have organized and demonstrated. But he also acknowledges the importance of a large-scale movement that involves gov- ernments and industry. “We also need to come together for national and international ac- tion,” he says. “We need congress to give us a price on carbon so all our local efforts for things like solar panels and windmills will come more easily.” During his presentation, McKibben will also explain why this is not just an environmental issue, but one that touches all aspects of our lives. He says that for the past century, the LIVE MUSIC @9:30PM FRI & SAT global community has viewed the world and decision-making through a purely economic ook NO COVER except special events** lens. The Mighty Sea w/ Brooke Surgener and Whitney Wright t’s been less than a year since Basket Eddy’s Seann P. Clark and Potwhole’s Abby Barrett Iteamed up to become The Mighty Sea, but the alternative acoustic duo has already made an impact in Erie during their first 10 months together. The talented twosome will make their next stop with a free show at The King’s Rook Friday, Oct. 10, where you can see why the duo has earned its fans. Despite being a two-part band, The Mighty Sea produces an intense full-formed whole sound, with beautifully brooding songs like “Scotch and Ice” and “Sailor’s Song.” The band released its first album earlier this year, which Erie Reader Managing Editor Ben Speggen Erie’s 1st Vapor Store & Lounge accurately called “raw yet haunting” in his four-star review. Between Barrett’s beautiful NOW OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK! work on the viola and Clark’s forceful vocals and strumming, The Mighty Sea provides a memorable sonic experience. That’s what happens when the success of Alt-J’s debut earned the band both critical and commercial success, won the , and, possibly most damning for the British band, garnered them comparisons as the “next .” So, how did the trio from Leeds, England respond? They stripped things down, taking away a lot of the dark, twitchy grooves from songs like “Fitzplea- sure” and settled for a more reserved sound. Of course, that doesn’t mean Alt-J isn’t afraid to still get weird, as evidenced on the shifty “,” but the band also provides some lovely sonic tableaus, including “Bloodflood pt. II” and the band’s “Nara” trilogy. This Is All Yours doesn’t have as many memorable moments as An Awesome Wave, but it’s a commendable sophomore effort. – Alex Bieler

Sondre Lerche Womens Haircuts $35 and up Please Mona Mens Haircuts $20 and up

hile the majority of Please was written before his 2013 divorce, Sondre Lerche’s split from his Wthen-wife can’t help but hang over the Norwegian singer/’s seventh full-length studio album. The 32-year-old Lerche certainly has a knack for making breezy, jazz-tinged pop music that’s easy on the ears, but Please understandably adds some extra bite to his charming oeuvre. The normally affable musician takes some shots on the jaunty kick-off track “Lucifer,” panacheerie.com with Lerche dropping lines like “When you’re with me I don’t understand why on Earth we would 814.838.3333 ever speak again” and “All I want to do is strike a match, set fire to you.” In addition to demonical- 2501 West 12th St ly-themed numbers, Lerche sprinkles in some dance-worthy rock amid his usual charming pop with the twitchy, glitchy “Bad Law.” Even with the somber themes, Lerche oozes charisma on Yorktown Centre Please, and pop fans should be thankful. – Alex Bieler

ep fans that pine for a reunion tour might as well stop wishing. It’s clear that Robert Plant is Zperfectly happy doing what he’s currently doing – which is performing with other extraordi- nary musicians as interested in creating new soundscapes as he is. The former rock god collabo- rates with a cadre of world instrumentalists to craft music as fresh as anything you will hear this year. The album opens with a mingling of African rhythms, psychedelic tumult, and banjo on a reimagining of the American folk song “Little Maggie.” The rest of the songs are all originals from Plant and the band, including the great concert shout-along “Turn It Up.” Of course none of this will receive any airplay on any commercial radio station, so if you want to be able to say you loved this record before it’s announced for its inevitable Grammy Award, buy it now. Then listen to it over and over and over again. – Bryan Toy

#Rosbox: Coming Out the Box Vol.1 Various Artists Roswell Enterprise

gain I repeat: Erie’s music scene is more vibrant than the scene in some cities thrice her size, Aand our hip-hop community is probably the most energetic portion thereof; for proof, one needs to look no further than this compilation album recorded, mixed, and mastered (mostly) by insanely talented local producer Doc Proto featuring local heavies C. Brown, Neiman, and Jonny Evans along with a dozen-odd others of varying consequence. But here’s the part where I cut a switch – “One Erie One Love” needs “One Erie Tough Love” sometimes… and, well, there’s some really terrible performances on this album. Terrible. But buy the album and decide for yourself, because the bad stuff doesn’t quite outweigh the good stuff here; however, I think some of the artists on this album still have some grindin’ to do before they’re allowed out the box again. – Cory Vaillancourt
