Defence Submission to the Standing Committee on State Development Inquiry into Defence Industry in New South Wales Summary 1. Defence welcomes the New South Wales (NSW) Government’s and Parliament’s interest in strengthening local defence industry to support Australia’s defence and national security. With the release of the 2016 Defence White Paper, Integrated Investment Program, and Defence Industry Policy Statement on 25 February 2016 and the Naval Shipbuilding Plan on 16 May 2017, there is clear direction to implement a major renewal of Defence capability and with it a strengthening of Australia’s defence industry. The scale and long-term nature of Defence’s requirements, including in areas such as the continuous naval shipbuilding programs, require a national approach and partnership between Defence and State and Territory Governments. 2. Australia’s industrial base is a fundamental enabler of Australia’s military capabilities, and an integral element of the nation’s defence. Defence welcomes the announcement of the NSW Government’s Defence and Industry Strategy – Strong, Smart and Connected and the establishment of Defence NSW. Defence also welcomes increasing collaboration between NSW and the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) in the defence sector. 3. Through new and expanded policies and programs, Defence is supporting Australia’s defence industry to develop the right technology, skills and capabilities to meet Defence’s current and future needs. There are considerable opportunities for local defence industry to contribute to Defence, with accompanying economic and community benefits. Ensuring that NSW businesses are aware of the opportunities and can leverage the support available from Defence and the broader Commonwealth is an important objective for collaboration between Defence, the NSW Government, and NSW industry. -

During this visit I had a chance to visit the Osborne shipyards and get an update on Collins class and enhanced availability as well as to get a briefing and discussion with senior Australian officials involved in shaping the new build submarine program. -

Fact Sheet — Parklands The parklands at Sydney Olympic Park provide 430 hectares of open space, recreation areas, wetlands and waterways for the people of Sydney located in the heart of the growing metropolitan Sydney. • One of Australia’s largest urban parklands, Sydney Olympic Park is a diverse and special place where protected remnant woodlands, rare saltmarshes, waterbird refuge and mangroves stand alongside places of heritage significance to create a unique parkland setting. • A lasting legacy of the Sydney 2000 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the parklands have been designed and built on land formerly used by government industries including the State Abattoirs, State Brickworks and Commonwealth Department of Defence, and are the result of remediating industrial land — an internationally recognised leading environmental remediation and urban renewal project. • Today, the parklands are playing an increasingly important role as both a local park and as a significant regional park destination as Sydney grows. The parklands are an association of many different parks and places brought together as a single entity for management purposes. • The suburb of Sydney Olympic Park covers an area of 640 hectares, of which 430 hectares are parklands. • There are now over 2.7 million visits to the parklands annually, representing 27.5 percent of Sydney Olympic Park total visitation. • The parklands include the leisure and play areas of Bicentennial Park, Wentworth Common and Blaxland Riverside Park; the sporting grounds at Wilson Park and Archery Park, and Monster and Mountain X facilities; the state heritage listed Newington Armory; the more natural areas of Newington Nature Reserve and Badu Mangroves; the Brickpit and 100 hectares of wetlands and waterways. -

HMAS Canberra (III) HMAS Canberra is the lead ship of the two ship Canberra class Amphibious Assault Ships otherwise known as a Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD). Based on the Buque de Proyección Estratégica (Strategic Projection Ship) design by Spanish shipbuilders Navantia. At 27,000 tonnes, the LHDs are the largest ships ever constructed for the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) and are being built by contractors BAE Systems Australia and Navantia. Not only was Qianmen a protected heritage area under a 2002 Beijing Municipal Government Conservation Plan, but the destruction was said to have happened because ofthe upcoming 2008 Summer Olympic Games. This thesis explores the sustainable development agenda ofthe International Olympic Committee, Agenda 21, in order to analyze the agenda, its impact in driving development policies in host cities Sydney, Australia and Beijing, China, and to what v extent planners incorporated historic preservation into Olympic development policies in both cities. -
