Pol Plançon a Listing of Recordings Revised: December 28, 2014 1 Pol Plançon A Listing of Recordings This isn't even remotely a discography. It is cobbled together from various sources, notably the Encyclopedic Discography of Victor Recordings (both the online version and the wonderful printed v. 2), the notes to the Marston CD issue of Plançon's G&T's and Zonophones, the online version of the booklet accompanying the NYPL LP issue of the Maplesons, and Hevingham-Root's Plançon discography in the 1953 Record Collector. In sum, there isn't a lick of original research in it. All selections sung in French except as noted. Speeds are from the Encyclopedic Discography of Victor Recordings (i.e., determined by William R. Moran). Keys of the G&T's are from Laurie Hevingham-Root's discography in The Record Collector. I have intentionally totally ignored all LP and most CD reissues because I don't care about them at all. L001 is a Marston CD reissue of all the G&T's and Zonophones. 82001-2 A and 82001-2 B is a Romophone CD reissue of all the Victors. 1100 is a Symposium CD reissue of many of the G&T London Reds, including some by Plançon; it is v. 8 in the series The Harold Wayne Collection. No copies of the Bettini cylinders are likely to exist; however, they are listed for the sake of completeness. All but the Faust appear in either the June 1898 or April 1900 catalogs; the Faust is listed in Hevingham-Root's discography in The Record Collector. A ">" before an entry means that I have that record in my collection. The same symbol before a record number means that I have a copy of that issue. (Normally there will be at least two ">" characters, one beside the entry, the other beside the record number actually in my collection.) Hess, Myra Irene Scharrer. However, Myra Hess had to wait for her ultimate breakthrough in her English homeland; for this reason, she initially had to earn her living by teaching. Her first major success abroad was her debut in Amster- dam, where she performed Schumann's Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 54 with the Concertgebouw Orchestra un- der Willem Mengelberg in 1912. In 1922 followed her de- but in New York, where she was celebrated with equal en- thusiasm. Her career advanced rapidly from that point onwards, and she rose to the position of one of the most successful pianists in her homeland during the ensuing years. During the 1930s, she undertook extended concert tours throughout all of Europe, including the Scandinavi- an countries, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Rumania, Tur- key, Yugoslavia, Germany, France and Holland. At the be- ginning of the Second World War, when all of London's concert halls were closed, she founded the legendary "Lunchtime Recitals" at the National Gallery, offering the London public a broad spectrum of high-quality pro- grammes with both young and established musicians. She herself performed at the National Gallery 146 times. The concerts were held without interruption until 10 Ap- Die Pianistin Myra Hess ril 1946. VOCAL 78 rpm Discs Minimum bid as indicated per item. Listings “Just about 1-2” should be considered as mint and “Cons. 2” with just the slightest marks. For collectors searching top copies, you’ve come to the right place! The further we get from the time of production (in many cases now 100 years or more), the more difficult it is to find such excellent extant pressings. Some are actually from mint dealer stocks and others the result of having improved copies via dozens of collections purchased over the past fifty years. * * * For those looking for the best sound via modern reproduction, those items marked “late” are usually of high quality shellac, pressed in the 1950-55 period. A number of items in this particular catalogue are excellent pressings from that era. * * * Please keep in mind that the minimum bids are in U.S. Dollars, a benefit to most collectors. * * * “Text label on verso.” For a brief period (1912-14), Victor pressed silver-on-black labels on the reverse sides of some of their single-faced recordings, usually with a translation of the text or similarly related comments. BESSIE ABOTT [s]. Riverdale, NY, 1878-New York, 1919. Following the death of her father which left her family penniless, Bessie and her sister Jessie (born Pickens) formed a vaudeville sister vocal act, accompanying themselves on banjo and guitar. Upon the recommendation of Jean de Reszke, who heard them by chance, Bessie began operatic training with Frida Ashforth. She subsequently studied with de Reszke him- self and appeared with him at the Paris Opéra, making her debut as Gounod’s Juliette.

Cover Story Vibrato Wars any people think a peace treaty was signed after the vibrato wars of the M1970s, when the plush string textures of the modern symphony orchestra were challenged by the leaner sound of historical instruments. Eliminating vibrato, along with playing on gut strings, was the most noticeable mark of historically informed performance style. Before it was even called HIP, employing “authentic instruments” set early-music players apart from symphony orchestras, and singing with a pristine, boy-like sound marked a new vocal coloring. Above: A spectrogram shows the pitch D5 on the written vowel “ah” from measure 35 of Mozart’s “Porgi amor” from Le Nozze di Figaro. From left to right, Nellie Melba, Leontyne Price, Renée Fleming, and Maria Callas. According to Ian Howell, “In these one-second clips, note the similar rate of vibrato (the number of peaks per second in the wavy lines) of all four singers. Melba, Price, and Fleming all share a similar extent (how far up and down they move) of a little more than a quarter-step; Callas’s vibrato is differentiated by a wider extent of about a half-step. Despite their similarities visually, Melba, Price, and Fleming’s vibratos sound distinct from one another. This paradox invites a deeper consideration of the manner in which we perceive vibrato on recordings (both historical and modern).” 30 EMAg Summer 2015 x To vibrate or not to vibrate: It’s a question instrumentalists and singers continue to ponder in their search for expressive truth. by Judith Malafronte the fingers, lips, or diaphragm to ripen the sound with this oscillating procedure, and pop singers often employ a wobbling or warbling effect on long notes.

His uncle was the famed impressario "Colonel" James Henry Mapleson. 1889 - Emigration to New York, having been trained by his music librarian violinist father and having played under Hans Richter as violinist and violist. Marcella Sembrich during March of this year records the cadenza from Johan Strauss's Friihlingstimmen (in its popular Italian language vocal version, Voci di primavera). Mapleson adds his own announcement at the close. 1901 - January 16. From the Metropolitan Opera prompter's box, Mapleson records Mme.
