From the Pastor’s Desk Your Generous Support

I hope you all had a wonderful and graceful . I would first like to thank the Parish staff and volunteers for their help during the Christmas Masses. Their generous support to the parish helps foster this parish as our second home and sacred place where we encounter Jesus most intimately.

As you know, we have felt a tremendous amount of loss and struggle during this year. This encompasses practically every aspect of our everyday life. Furthermore, this struggle has come to our beloved parish of St. Barnabas.

Unfortunately, the parish has lost a significant amount of revenue because of the Pandemic. As reported in the bulletin, the collections have been down considerably in comparison to the previous year. Certain parish programs such as CYO and the Summer Basketball League have been suspended which the parish depends on for financial support. In addition, the parish didn’t receive any revenue from Camps R Us.

Any extra financial support you can give to the parish during this difficult time would be of great help to the financial health of the parish. I thank you tremendously for all the generous support you have already given and for your prayers for the parish.

I recognize that some of you have suffered financially during this pandemic. If you are not able to give, I understand. If you may need temporal assistance, please contact parish social ministry or myself personally. If you need spiritual assistance, I am always here for you as your pastor.

As you know, we are in the process of renovating the sanctuary which has already been paid. The money used to pay for the renovation is under reserve funds, which means that money that was donated years past for the renovation can only be used for that purpose. This petition of financial help that I am asking is not for paying off the renovation. It is for the overall financial health of the parish.

You can give your donations to the parish through online giving from our parish website or through your parish envelopes. Our parish website is stbarnabasny.org.

The most important thing I ask you even more than your generous donations is for your prayers. Your prayers for the parish and for her members are paramount. Thank you for your wonderful love for Jesus and for your love for the Parish of Saint Barnabas.

In Jesus and Mary,

The Holy Family Of Jesus, Mary and Joseph

First Reading SIR 3:2-6, 12-14

God sets a father in honor over his children; a mother’s authority he confirms over her sons. Whoever honors his father atones for sins, and preserves himself from them. When he prays, he is heard; he stores up riches who reveres his mother. Whoever honors his father is gladdened by children, and, when he prays, is heard. Whoever reveres his father will live a long life; he who obeys his father brings comfort to his mother. My son, take care of your father when he is old; grieve him not as long as he lives. Even if his mind fail, be considerate of him; revile him not all the days of his life; kindness to a father will not be forgotten, firmly planted against the debt of your sins —a house raised in justice to you.

Second Reading COL 3:12-21

Brothers and sisters: Put on, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, bearing with one another and forgiving one another, if one has a grievance against another; as the Lord has forgiven you, so must you also do. And over all these put on love, that is, the bond of perfection. And let the peace of Christ control your hearts, the peace into which you were also called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, as in all wisdom you teach and admonish one another, singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Wives, be subordinate to your husbands, as is proper in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives, and avoid any bitterness toward them. Children, obey your parents in everything, for this is pleasing to the Lord. Fathers, do not provoke your children, so they may not become discouraged.

Gospel Lk 2:22, 39-40

When the days were completed for their purification according to the law of Moses, they took him up to to present him to the Lord. When they had fulfilled all the prescriptions of the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him. Thank you for your generous support of the 2020 Ministries Appeal.

2020 Ends: With No End to Discrimination Against Religious Freedom

"Of course, there are dangers in religious freedom and freedom of opinion. But to deny these rights is worse than dangerous, it is absolutely fatal to liberty." - President Harry S. Truman

San Francisco, CA: As new restrictions are imposed on churches that will now ban indoor worship services in some counties, Abp. Salvatore Cordileone said, "Worship is both a natural and a Constitutional right. My people want to receive the Body and Blood of Christ; they need it, and have every right to be free to do so."(1) The new health order treats religious worship as a "non-essential" activity, while allowing hair & nail salons, massage parlors, and tattoo parlors to remain open. The criticized the government for "demoting worship" and further said, "But the government still chooses to treat worship as less important than shopping for shoes." (2) However, in May, 2020, Pres. Trump said, "Today, I am identifying houses of worship, churches, synagogues, and mosques, as essential places that provide essential services." (3)

Mississippi: A 3rd grade girl was banned from wearing her "Jesus Loves Me" mask even though "Other students within the school district have freely worn masks with logos of sports teams or even the words 'Black Lives Matter,'" said an Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) attorney. (4) School administrators forced her to remove the mask because it had a "religious message."

The school's action was a clear violation of the U.S. Department of Education's Guidance on students' religious freedom which states: "Students may display religious messages on items of clothing to the same extent that they are permitted to display other comparable messages."(6) "Public schools have a duty to respect the free expression of students that the First Amendment guarantees to them. ... No public school student should be singled out for peacefully sharing her religious beliefs with fellow students," said ADF counsel.

Kentucky: A Federal Appeals Court recently overturned a lower court's decision that declared Gov. Andy Beshear cannot order private religious schools to stop in-person instruction to prevent the spread of Covid- 19. This lower court (U.S. District judge) said the First Amendment protects religious schools' right to make decisions without government interference. "If social distancing is good enough for offices, colleges, and universities within the Commonwealth, it is good enough for religious K-12 schools that benefit from Constitutional protections."

However, the new ruling from the Federal Appeals Court stated, "We are not in a position to second-guess the governor's determination regarding the health & safety of the Commonwealth at this point in time." (9) thereby denying First Amendment protections to religious schools. The Kentucky Attorney General who supports First Amendment protections, said, "...we're already hard at work to take this matter to the U.S. Supreme Court."

“Necessity is the plea for every infringement of human freedom. It is the argument of tyrants; it is the creed of slaves. – William Pitt
