Match background

Their first few steps along the UEFA Champions League road have been daunting for both FC Zenit St. Petersburg and FC BATE Borisov with their opening fixtures pitching them into battle with two of the giants of European football. Matchday 3 presents a different hurdle as the two debutant clubs face each other at the Petrovsky Stadium. • The representatives of and Belarus are both seeking their first win in the competition. Three weeks ago they scored their first goals and both put in sterling performances but one point was all they had to show for their combined efforts. That prize went to BATE although they could have been forgiven for thinking they were destined to pick up all three points as they hurled themselves at Juventus' back line and were rewarded with two goals in the opening 23 minutes. • Sergei Kryvets and Igor Stasevich scored to underline to an exuberant home crowd that the underdogs are no respecters of reputation. However, Juventus were not going to give up without a fight and with a header followed by a low drive, Vincenzo Iaquinta brought the visitors level before the break. • A point might have been considered a poor return for BATE's early dominance but at least it got them off the mark in Group H, having started with a 2-0 away defeat at Real Madrid CF. Zenit remain on zero points after they followed Matchday 1's narrow defeat in – Alessandro Del Piero dividing the teams through a late free-kick – with a 2-1 home reverse against the Spanish titleholders. • The Russian champions' cause was not helped when defender Tomáš Hubočan put through his own net early on. The UEFA Cup and UEFA Super Cup holders were rattled at that stage but gradually found their stride and when record signing Danny levelled midway through the opening period, they appeared to be building the momentum to go on and dominate. However, Madrid's response was swift and deadly, Ruud van Nistelrooy taking advantage of more defensive uncertainty to ensure Bernd Schuster's team claimed the spoils. • This will be the first time Zenit have taken on Belarussian opposition in an official game while BATE have met Russian opponents on six previous occasions in European club competition. Their record is a dismal one, losing all six. Moreover, they have only scored a single goal in those meetings. It came in their first of the six games, a UEFA Cup qualifying round tie in the 1999/00 season and, as FC Lokomotiv Moskva rattled in seven goals of their own that day, BATE's single strike was scarcely relevant. The away leg ended 5-0 to Lokomotiv to complete a comprehensive 12-1 overall humbling for the Borisov club.

• Heavy aggregate defeats also followed in the 2005/06 UEFA Cup second qualifying round against FC Krylya Sovetov Samara (4-0) while at the same stage of the same competition the following year, FC Rubin Kazan beat them 5-0 over the two games. • The defeat by Madrid means that Dick Advocaat's team have lost two of their last three European games on home soil. In their triumphant UEFA Cup campaign they went down 1-0 to Bayer 04 Leverkusen at the quarter-final stage but retained a substantial overall success after winning the away leg 4-1. In the three other knockout rounds they won the home legs without conceding a goal: 1-0 against Villarreal CF (Round of 32), 2-0 versus (last 16) and 4-0 against FC Bayern München in the semi-final. They had stuttered when hosting in the group stage, though, drawing 1-1 with AZ Alkmaar and 2-2 with 1. FC Nürnberg. • BATE were forced to come through all three qualifying rounds to become the first team from their country to compete in the group stage of Europe's premier club tournament. And their away form provided a considerable boost to their prospects. The journey started against Valur Reykjavík with a 1-0 away win sealing a 3-0 aggregate victory. A splendid 2-1 win in Brussels against RSC Anderlecht then set up a 4-3 overall success, while in the third round against PFC Levski Sofia, 's men again laid the ground for progress to the group stage with their performance in the first leg, winning 1-0 in Bulgaria and drawing 1-1 at home. • Advocaat was in charge of the Netherlands team who twice beat Belarus in the UEFA EURO 2004™ qualifying campaign. They won 3-0 in Eindhoven and 2-0 in Minsk. Zenit's Fernando Ricksen played in the Eindhoven game on 7 September 2002. • The other game in Group H on Matchday 3 pits Juventus against Real Madrid.

Latest domestic information • Saturday 18 October: FC Spartak Nalchik 2-2 FC Zenit St. Petersburg (Sumeiko 18, Mashukov 87; Dominguez 72, Arshavin 82) Zenit were denied a third consecutive Premier-Liga wins late on in Nalchik. After the home side had taken a first-half lead the UEFA Cup holders took command thanks to goals from Alejandro Dominguez and Andrei Arshavin, only for the hosts to level three minutes from time and earn a share of the spoils. • "The game was tough," said Zenit coach Dick Advocaat. "The first goal was a shot across the bows for us. After going behind our players realised they had to become more active. We had enough opportunities to reply before the break, but the second half was much better." • The draw represented a comedown for Zenit, who recorded their biggest ever win in the Premier-Liga when they defeated FC Luch-Energia Vladivostok 8-1 on 5 October. Anatoliy Tymoshchuk missed an early penalty, before Fatih Tekke scored a hat-trick, Danny struck twice and Dominguez, Arshavin and also got on the scoresheet as Zenit notched the third biggest victory in the history of the Russian top flight. • Fatih's goals were his first for Zenit since 13 August – in only his second start since then – as he replaced , who missed the game with a minor thigh injury. • Ivica Križanac returned to the starting XI having been left out for two games, replacing Hubočan as Shirokov stepped in for the suspended Igor Denisov.

• Vyacheslav Malafeev is the only Zenit player to have played every minute of the Premier-Liga campaign so far – Konstantin Zyryanov has featured in all 24 games to date. • Zenit have conceded ten goals in the final 15 minutes of league games this season – almost a third of their total of 31. International news • Denisov, Zyryanov, Arshavin, Pogrebnyak and Aleksandr Anyukov all featured in Russia's FIFA 2010 World Cup qualifiers against Germany and Finland on 11 and 15 October. The quintet played all 90 minutes of the 2-1 defeat in Germany, Arshavin scoring the goal for the away side and Denisov making his debut. Arshavin was on target again four days later and this time there was a happier result as Russia beat Finland 3-0. Malafeev was an unused substitute in both games. • Tymoshchuk came up against Križanac in Kharkov on 11 October and it finished honours even as Ukraine and Croatia played out a goalless draw. Four days later Križanac was in action again as Croatia defeated Andorra 4-0, while Danny impressed enough as a substitute in Portugal's 0-0 draw in Sweden to earn a start against Albania, but his side were again held. Radek Šírl played 90 minutes of the Czech Republic's 2-1 defeat by Poland and was a second-half substitute in the 1-0 win against Slovenia that followed. • Defender Kim Dong Jin played for Korea Republic in their 4-1 victory against the United Arab Emirates in Seoul on 15 October. Miscellaneous • Lee Ho celebrates his 24th birthday on 22 October, the day after the BATE game. • Zenit broke the Russian transfer record on 25 August by paying FC Dinamo Moskva €30m for Portugal midfielder Danny. BATE UEFA milestones • Sergei Kryvets' goal against Juventus on Matchday 2 was BATE's first in the UEFA Champions League proper, while Igor Stasevich's strike in the same game was the club's 50th goal in UEFA club competition. UEFA Champions League statistics • Five BATE players have appeared in all eight games, including qualifying: Vladimir Rzhevski, Aleksandr Yurevich, Dmitri Likhtarovich, Kryvets and Pavel Nekhaychik. • Gennadi Bliznyuk's goal in the second qualifying round, second leg against RSC Anderlecht was his tenth in UEFA club competition, equalling the record of Georgi Kondratyev for the most European goals scored by a Belarussian. In addition, Bliznyuk's goal was his seventh in UEFA Champions League qualifying – also a national record. • Likhtarovich has now played 42 matches in UEFA club competition, another record while at a Belarussian club. BATE assistant coaches Vadim Skripchenko (30 games) and Aleksandr Fedorovich (28) are third and fourth on the list respectively. FC Barcelona's Aleksandr Hleb is the Belarussian with most appearances in UEFA club competition having featured 63 times. • BATE have committed 46 fouls so far, fewer only than FC Shakhtar Donetsk (46). Disciplinary information • Anri Khagush is available again having served a one-match ban against Juventus following his red card on Matchday 1.

Latest domestic information • Friday 17 October: FC MTZ-RIPO Minsk 0-0 FC BATE Borisov BATE maintained their unbeaten record in the Vysshaya Liga this season, but were unable to break down the side that began the weekend one place below them. Kryvets and Nekhaychik went closest to extending the league leaders' four-match winning run. • "That was a combative performance," BATE coach Viktor Goncharenko said. "It was hard to predict our players' form after their return from international duty. I think we made another half-step towards the title though." • BATE are now unbeaten in the league for a club record 25 matches, stretching back to the 2-1 defeat by already-relegated FK Minsk on the final day of last season – they have won 16 and drawn nine games this campaign. • BATE had marked their return to domestic action following Matchday 2 with a 1-0 victory at home to FC Lokomotiv Minsk on 5 October, Vitali Rodionov scoring the only goal on the stroke of half-time. • Rodionov has scored four times in the last four league matches. • Maksim Zhavnerchik has not appeared for BATE since their defeat by Real Madrid CF and was removed from the squad prior to their draw with Juventus. "I consider him one of BATE's most promising players," said coach Goncharenko. "Unfortunately, he does not have the desire to develop his game. If someone does not work properly, and does that over a long period of time, I have to make radical decisions." • Goncharenko is yet to experience a Vysshaya Liga defeat with BATE having taken charge of the club on 13 November 2007 ahead of the current season. • BATE did, however, lose 6-3 on aggregate against MTZ-RIPO in the Belarus Cup semi-finals in April. Injury news • Aleksandr Ermakovich – out since 7 September (knee) International news • Stasevich set up the goal for Belarus in their 3-1 defeat by England in 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifying on 15 October, while Rodionov came off the bench with 23 minutes remaining. Sergei Veremko and Sergei Sosnovski were unused substitutes. • Kryvets, Aleksandr Volodko and Mikhail Sivakov helped Belarus qualify for the 2009 UEFA European Under-21 Championship finals with a 2-1 aggregate victory against Turkey in the play-offs. After spending the first-leg defeat on 10 October on the bench, Mikhail Sivakov scored the opening goal in the 2-0 win in Borisov four days later. Miscellaneous • Stasevich celebrates his 23rd birthday on 21 October, when BATE play Zenit, while Anton Sakharov and Veremko turn 26 one and five days earlier, respectively. • Although Goncharenko's date of birth is widely quoted as 10 September 1977, he was born on 10 June 1977. The confusion arose after he lost his passport and, in the replacement, the official mistakenly entered 09 (September) as the month of his birth instead of 06 (June). • BATE will play their home group games at the Dinamo Stadium in Minsk, 65km away from Borisov, as their usual home ground has a capacity of only 5,000.

Head coach FC Zenit St. Petersburg: Dick Advocaat Date of birth: 27 September 1947 Nationality: Dutch Playing career: ADO Den Haag (twice), Roda JC, VVV Venlo, Chicago Sting (twice), Sparta Rotterdam, K. Berchem Sport, FC Utrecht Coaching career: DSVP, Netherlands (assistant), HFC Haarlem, FC Dordrecht, Netherlands (assistant), Netherlands, PSV Eindhoven, Rangers FC, Netherlands, VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach, United Arab Emirates, Korea Republic, FC Zenit St. Petersburg Dick Advocaat has earned plenty of honours in his long coaching career but FC Zenit St. Petersburg's victory against his former club Rangers FC in the 2007/08 UEFA Cup final in Manchester constituted his first European club trophy. His second was not long in coming as Manchester United FC were then defeated in the UEFA Super Cup three months later. Advocaat enjoyed unequivocal success with Rangers between 1998 and 2002. In his first two years after replacing Walter Smith, the side won two league titles, two Scottish Cups and a League Cup, adding another League Cup in 2002. It took the lure of international football, and a second spell as Netherlands coach, to entice him away from Glasgow. Advocaat guided the Oranje to UEFA EURO 2004™ thanks to a 6-1 aggregate triumph over Scotland in the play-offs, and then in Portugal to the semi-finals before losing to the hosts. He quit directly, going on to have short stints with VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach and also the United Arab Emirates before leading the Korea Republic at the 2006 FIFA World Cup. Following a group-stage exit in Germany, he took the reins at Zenit that July and in 2007 steered the team to their first Russian championship. His penchant for travel perhaps began during his modest playing career, which brought two spells with Chicago Sting. Even as his playing days wound down, he began coaching with amateur side DSVP and from there Advocaat was appointed assistant to national-team coach Rinus Michels. His first assignment as head coach came with HFC Haarlem in 1987, then he landed a second division championship with FC Dordrecht, and by 1992 he was national coach. Three years later, Advocaat returned to club management with PSV Eindhoven, helping them to winners' medals in the Eredivisie and Dutch Cup before his move to Rangers.

FC BATE Borisov: Viktor Goncharenko Date of birth: 10 June 1977 Nationality: Belarussian Playing career: FC RUOR Minsk, FC BATE Borisov Coaching career: FC BATE Borisov Viktor Goncharenko's playing career as a defender with FC BATE Borisov was cut short aged 25 because of ruptured left knee ligaments. He immediately switched his attention to coaching, taking over the club's reserves and guiding them to second-placed finishes in 2005 and 2006 before graduating to become the assistant to first-team coach Igor Kriushenko. In 2007 he replaced Kriushenko on a temporary basis when the latter developed health problems and guided BATE to five wins in his six matches in charge. When Kriushenko departed for FC Dinamo Minsk in November of that year, Goncharenko got his big break with the newly-crowned champions. He had his work cut out, however, with the side in transition after a number of key departures and the retirement of long-term goalkeeper Aleksandr Fedorovich. His purchases of the likes of Vladimir Rzhevski from Finland's third tier as well as Sergei Sosnovski and Sergei Veremko proved the shrewdest of moves. Indeed, as the 2008 Vysshaya Liga campaign began he guided the club to a ten-match winning streak and that summer helped BATE become the first Belarussian representatives in the UEFA Champions League group stage. "I've said it before and I'll say it again: I have an outstanding team with great potential," he said after his side sealed their passage having beaten Valur Reykjavík, RSC Anderlecht and PFC Levski Sofia in qualifying. "Our dream has come true." Goncharenko's signings played key parts. Rzhevski and Sosnovski both scored against Levski while it was the heroics of Veremko that kept them in the first leg in Sofia, the keeper capping a stunning performance by saving a penalty as BATE won 1-0. Such was the coach's confidence that at half-time during the 1-1 draw in the return and with BATE down to ten men he left the dressing room after just a few minutes, explaining: "My team were completely in control and there was no sense me bending their ears with unnecessary instructions."

Name Nat. Date of birth UCL UEFA Pedro Proença POR 03.11.1970 1 18 Pedro Proença has been on the rise in European refereeing circles since making his continental bow with the UEFA Regions' Cup in 2002. Within two years he was taking charge of the UEFA European Under-19 Championship final and has gone on to establish himself in the premier club competitions, with his debut in the UEFA Champions League group stage coming on Matchday 1 of the 2007/08 campaign. Proença, who achieved UEFA Premier referee status in January 2007, took charge of two matches at the October 1992 amateur event. That quickly led to UEFA European U17 Championship qualifying matches before the U19 finals in Switzerland in July 2004, culminating in Spain’s 1-0 final win against Turkey. A FIFA World Cup qualifier, as Ukraine beat Kazakhstan 2-1 in Almaty soon followed, before regular outings in UEFA's two high-profile club competitions. He has also been responsible for UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifying matches and took charge of two games in qualifying for UEFA EURO 2008™. The financial director from Pinhal Novo, who enjoys skiing in his spare time along with a love of reading and writing, has naturally made good progress at domestic level. While regularly awarded leading domestic fixtures in the Portuguese Liga, his most notable match has been the 2006/07 Portuguese Cup final, when Sporting Clube de Portugal were 1-0 winners against CF Os Belenenses. He also ran the rule over two FC Porto successes in the domestic Super Cup when they were 1-0 victors against UD Leiria and 3-0 winners against Vitória FC in August 2003 and 2006 respectively.

UEFA information

UEFA decision on Club Atlético de Madrid-Liverpool FC match The UEFA Champions League Group D match between Club Atlético de Madrid and Liverpool FC is taking place as scheduled on Wednesday at the Vicente Calderón Stadium in Madrid. European football's governing body issued the following statement last week: "Following the decision of UEFA's Control and Disciplinary Body to sanction Club Atlético de Madrid for a series of incidents at the UEFA Champions League Group D match against Olympique de Marseille on 1 October, the club has lodged an appeal against the decision and requested suspension of the sanctions to allow their match against Liverpool FC to be played in Madrid as originally scheduled. After immediate consideration of the request for suspension, and having considered in particular the organisational and logistical difficulties related to relocating the Club Atlético de Madrid v Liverpool FC match to another venue at short notice, the chairman of the Appeals Body has decided to grant the request for suspension of the sanctions. "Consequently, UEFA can confirm that the UEFA Champions League match between Club Atlético de Madrid and Liverpool FC will take place as scheduled on 22 October at the Vicente Calderón Stadium in Madrid. It should be emphasised that suspension of the sanctions does not mean that the decision of the Control and Disciplinary Body has been set aside. The decision remains in force pending a full hearing of the appeal which will take place on Friday 31 October at the UEFA Headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland. UEFA is however keen to stress that safety and security matters, including efficient co-operation with the police, are of the utmost priority and that there is a zero tolerance policy for incidents concerning racism in football. The match will be under particular scrutiny and UEFA is ready to take immediate and further action if there are any reported incidents at this match." FARE Action Week This week's UEFA Champions League matches are being used as a platform to promote the Football Against Racism in Europe (FARE) Action Week. UEFA's partner in the fight against racism is calling on all stakeholders across European football to make a joint stand for equality and against racism and discrimination. This year, the FARE Action Week, which continues until 28 October, will feature an unprecedented 40 European countries involved in an united effort to rid the game of racism and exclusion. "We thank the clubs playing in the UEFA Champions League for their participation in the FARE Action Week, and captains for accepting to wear the unite against racism captain's armbands," said UEFA communications director William Gaillard. "The players' testimony of respect for diversity is much appreciated." Activities at UEFA Champions League matches will include children escorting players in unite against racism T-shirts, tannoy announcements, the "No to Racism" giant screen TV spot and editorials in match programmes. Refereeing experiment UEFA President Michel Platini and General Secretary David Taylor were 'wired up' to follow the referees' communication as an experiment with five match officials was carried out at a UEFA European Under-19 Championship qualifying round mini-tournament in Slovenia. In addition to the match referee and two assistant referees on the touchline, two extra assistants were situated behind the goalline to focus on incidents that happen in the penalty area, such as fouls or misconduct. The tests followed approval of the test by football's lawmakers, the International Football Association Board, last spring. "It is very important to see this experiment at first hand, and I could not get closer than to stand behind the goal," said Mr Taylor. "What I have seen in this experiment has been very interesting and worthwhile." Only a Game? exhibition opens The Only A Game? exhibition opened its doors to the public on 11 October as the UEFA-driven project takes up residence in the World Museum Liverpool until 1 March. With admission free, the interactive exhibition invites visitors to plunge into the emotions of football, inspired by a selection of prestigious artefacts, trophies and memorabilia, covering in particular the last 50 years of European football. Only A Game? also charts the development of the European Community after the Treaty of Rome, in tandem with the growth of the European club competitions. UEFA first vice-president Şenes Erzik said: "The exhibition is a fantastic event to convey the message that football is a family, altogether, without discrimination."

Competition facts

• UEFA Champions League: Group stage milestones Holders Manchester United FC are hoping to avoid becoming the first defending champions to fail to get through a group stage since the UEFA Champions League began. (This record, like the others, includes the seasons between 1999/00 and 2002/03 that featured a second group stage). In 1992/93, FC Barcelona were the reigning European Champion Clubs' Cup holders and were beaten 4-3 on aggregate in the second round by PFC CSKA Moskva. S.S. Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta became the oldest player to compete in the UEFA Champions League in 2007/08 when he featured against Olympiacos CFP on Matchday 1 at the age of 43 years and 168 days. The record was previously held by Alessandro Costacurta, the AC Milan defender who played against AEK FC in the 2006/07 season at the age of 40 years and 211 days. Ballotta was aged 43 years 252 days when he featured against Real Madrid CF on Matchday 6. Laurent Blanc is the oldest player to score in the competition, aged 36 years and 339 days, having found the net for Manchester United FC in their 3-2 defeat of Olympiacos CFP on 23 October 2002. Celestine Babayaro is the youngest player to have appeared in the UEFA Champions League. He was 16 years and 87 days when he started for RSC Anderlecht against FC Steaua Bucureşti on 23 November 1994. He was then sent off in the 37th minute. In 2006/07, PFC Levski Sofia joined 1. FC Košice in being the only team to have played in the UEFA Champions League and never picked up a point. The Slovakian side have not returned to the competition since losing all six games in their only campaign to date in 1997/98. Six other teams have gone through a single group stage campaign without picking up a point: FC Dynamo Kyiv (2007/08), SK Rapid Wien (2005/06) and RSC Anderlecht (2004/05) plus FC Spartak Moskva and Bayer 04 Leverkusen (2002/03, first and second group stage respectively) and Fenerbahçe SK (2001/02, first group stage). Dynamo also conceded 19 goals in their six outings in 2007/08, equalling the record let in during a group stage set by Ferencvárosi TC in the 1995/96 campaign. Before their 3-1 win against Sporting Clube de Portugal on Matchday 6 of the 2006/07 campaign, FC Spartak Moskva went 22 games without a win in the competition, surpassing the unwanted record set by AEK Athens FC on Matchday 3 of the same campaign. The lowest total for a team qualifying from the group stage is seven points. The first to do it, since three points for a win was introduced in 1995/96, were Legia Warszawa that same season before Bayer 04 Leverkusen managed it in 1999/2000 and Liverpool FC in 2001/02. FC Lokomotiv Moskva and eventual finalists Juventus both progressed with seven points in 2002/03, a feat achieved by Rangers FC and Werder Bremen in 2005/06. Last updated: 11.10.2008

2007/08 season Domestic record: BATE claimed a second successive Belarussian league title – and a fourth overall – with three games to spare of the 2007 season, eventually finishing 12 points clear of second-placed FC Gomel and FC Shakhtyor Soligorsk. Their hopes of a domestic double had already been dashed, however, as FC Dinamo Brest emerged as 4-3 penalty shoot-out victors after a goalless draw in the Belarus Cup final in May 2007. European record: Having overcome a 2-0 first-leg deficit to defeat APOEL FC 3-2 in the UEFA Champions League first qualifying round, BATE enjoyed a more comfortable success in the next stage against FH Hafnarfjördur, a 3-1 win in the first game in Iceland paving the way for a 4-2 overall success. A 2-2 home draw against FC Steaua Bucureşti in the third qualifying round raised hopes of progress into the group stage which were ended by a 2-0 reverse in Romania, and the subsequent UEFA Cup campaign proved short-lived, Villarreal CF running out 6-1 aggregate winners in the first round.
