Ron Lazar’s Report on the DCF Donald Carpenter Goss Fund

As I write this in mid-May, we have only 6 weeks left to our deadline on June 30th, but are on our way to completing a successful college fund drive. While the class of 1953 has achieved its’ $200,000 dollar goal, a $250,000 result is possible. Our participation goal of 300 classmates is still short by 70. We need your help if you have not contributed. The following list of generous classmates and widows shows the names in bold that have increased their gift from last year with a star added for those who are the “Special Supporters” of Don Goss on the presentation to be made to his family. These individuals either returned to the fund after an absence or increased their gift by 20% or more from last year. We are receiving follow up gifts from classmates who want to be part of the Goss presentation. Remember that any amount of increase from 2011 will make you a part of this effort and you have until June 30th to participate.

Listed on the next few pages is the Honor Roll of the Great Class of Dartmouth 1953 that have come to support their beloved College, and to support the special program dedicated to Donald Carpenter Goss, Dear Friend and Spiritual Leader Extraordinaire of this Great Class.

Collins Corner I had the privilege of attending a wonderful event honoring Hank Edler at the Governor’s mansion in Denver on April 18th. Hank has been a mover and shaker in the Denver area for many years and his ongoing contributions to the College and the Class are well noted in his Alumni Award citation. Over 150 Dartmouth types gathered to celebrate the event and the glowing comments and accolades were well deserved and appropriate. Fellow classmates and Denverites, Bert Melcher, Don McMichael and John Shaddock were in the group and joined in the celebration. (I think that qualifies as a mini-reunion) Hank’s wife Betty, their two daughters and their grandson were all there to share in Hanks’ honor.

Bert Melcher and his gracious wife Rosie were kind enough to offer me lodging and get me to and from the airport. The following morning we four ‘53s met for breakfast and solved many of the problems of the world. On the way to the airport Bert and I stopped and visited with Hank at his rehab facility. Although Hank has many post stroke challenges ahead of him, his attitude was both remarkable and humbling. Hank said, “You know, although I have lost the use of one side, I still have my voice and my mind – I really am a very lucky man.” When it is completed, Hank will be moving next door to a new condominium facility right next door to his existing rehab center. You can be in touch with Hank at Clermont Park, 2479 S. Clermont St, Denver, CO 80222.

I spent a couple of weeks in in March, and had the pleasure of spending a few nights with Bob and Anne Simpson at Harbor Ridge. While there, the Simpson’s invited Connie Clery, Jane Springer, Leo and Delores Clancy and Dick Fleming over for dinner. Harbor Ridge really is Dartmouth South and we had a pleasant mini-reunion. Although I missed HR creator John Dodge and his wife Lore, we did have a chance for a phone conversation. While in the Vero Beach area, I also enjoyed some time and a lunch with Bob Henderson at their club at Winsor. He and Carole were busy hosting about thirteen of their children and grands at their lovely home at Winsor so keep very busy. Attached is a picture of Bob and Anne at their home in Harbor Ridge and one of Bob Henderson at work.

The first Tuesday of every month is the time for Bill Chamberlin’s ’53 luncheon at the Norwich Inn. I joined the group on May 1st along with Bill C, Fred Carleton, Harlan Fair, Dick O’Connor and Chuck Reilly. If you find yourself in the Norwich area at that time of the month, join us – it’s a pleasant time to connect. On the way back to Boston I enjoyed a visit with Andy Sigler at his lovely home in Norwich, and then went down to have dinner with Dave and Cynthia Donovan at their home in Sutton, NH on Blasdell Lake.

The Status of our Fund:

Thanks to all of you we are having a pretty good year – but still have a way to go. The end is only a few weeks away climaxing on June 30th. Ron Lazar and his team have been doing a great job. At the beginning, Ron and I set a Class goal of $250,000 and 72 % participation. Both milestones for our class. We still have about $45,000 to go on the dollars and we need about 70 more of us as participants. We have $205,000 in so far and only 235 have participated – so we still have a lot to work with. Traditionally, many of you wait until the end of the campaign to participate – and now is the time to do it. No matter how large or how small, your participation is important to your class. If you’re not in yet, how about doing it today? We are a great Class to be part of, and you are part of our Class. If you were aboard last year we really need you again this year. If you have been absent for a while, what a great time in your life to reach out and re-connect – we have missed you. You can mail it in today at Dartmouth College Fund, Gift Recording, 6066 Development Office, Hanover, NH 03755 or give online by searching Dartmouth College Fund and follow instructions. Thanks.

The 1953 60th Reunion – June 10th – 13th, 2013:

Ready ------Set ------Plan ------Now is the time to firm up your plans to attend.

Harlan Fair and his Committee have a great reunion in the works for you. Details will be out by the next newsletter. In the meantime, there is a separate Reunion Page listed earlier in this newsletter including a card you should cut out and return letting Harlan know of your plans and wishes. We are expecting over 100 classmates to attend and certainly hope that you will be one of them. Our Newsletter editor set the challenge for 200 classmates earlier: are we up to it?

You will have several options for accommodations including, a dormitory, local inns and hotels and maybe a friend. If you would like to stay at the newly refurbished Hanover Inn, we have 20 rooms set aside for 1953 on a first come basis. You may call the Inn after 6/1/12 at 603-643-4300, identify yourself as a ’53, and make your reservation. These rooms will be held until 9/1/12, and then it will be rooms as available. At this stage of our lives there is no friend like an old friend so make the effort to connect or re-connect – it’s worth the effort! Believe me, you will be glad you did and so will your fellow ‘53s. Reach out and be part of your own history

The Class of 1953 Commons:

If you have not yet visited the ’53 Commons, you are in for a real treat. We will be using parts of the new facility during Homecoming on October 26 and 27 and again for our 60th Reunion June 10 – 13, 2013. It really is a spectacular renovation and has little resemblance to the facility as we knew it. The dining halls are elaborate, the food options beyond belief and the newly refurbished Paul D Paganucci Conference Room is state of the art. As you enter, on the immediate right, there is a small lounge area dominated by a large portrait of our own Donald Carpenter Goss. At the ’53 Commons dedication, President Jim Kim presented the ’53 Trust Committee with a gift in the form of one of the heavy metal dining trays we all used during our Hanover tenure. Each one was personally inscribed with thanks from the College for all the ’53 Trust and our Class accomplished. Don had his elegantly (is that a surprise) framed along with the enclosed card bearing a copy of the inscription. This historic piece of our past and our achievement has now been hung on the wall in the “Goss” room along with his portrait.

A Few Kudos:

The Dartmouth Figure Skating team captured their sixth national title. The entire season was dedicated to former Coach Mike McGean ’49 who passed away in 2011. Mike and his co-coach daughter Loren ‘92 coached the team through 2008. Both Mike and his wife Lois were inducted into the Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 1991.

Woman’s lacrosse won the Ivy League title and a bid to play in the NCAA tournament. They lost to Syracuse in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Co-captain Sarah Plumb ‘12 was named the Ivy League player of the year and has set new records in many aspects of the game

A Few Reminders:

- Be sure to cut out the Reunion card and return it as instructed. - Don’t forget to be part of the1953’s record breaking DCF initiative. Today would be nice. - Class Officers Weekend is September 28 and 29, 2012 - Class meeting and Homecoming 10/27 and 10/28. Night game, class meeting and lunch at ’53 Commons - Home games this fall; 9/15 Butler 7PM, 9/29 Penn, 10/13 Sacred Heart, 10/27 Harvard 5 PM (Homecoming), 11/10 Brown

Hilton Head Mini-Mini-Reunion report by Dick O’Connor

The Hilton Head Reunion has sort of shrunk in size over the years from the days of the Gosses, Cartmells, Hamms, Hallorans, O’Connors, Hagues, Chamberlains, Smiths, Millers, Kralls et al, but we managed to have an evening with Alan and Ginger Miller, Dave and Joanne Halloran, and ourselves, beginning with refreshments at the Miller’s beautiful Marsh View home and dinner at Redfish. Wally Ashnault and Eileen had hoped to attend but had a conflict, and lunched the next day with the Millers. Cynthia and I had a lovely lunch with Marilyn Hague on St. John’s and she looks just great, playing lots of golf and tennis and delighted to live year round at Seabrook though she still gets up to Maine for visits with family and friends. Here are some pictures of the Hilton Head excursion and we all look forward to returning next year---tis a garden spot.

David Cost, the Class’ leading poet, shares a reunion with the Orozco Frescos in, of all places, the Wall Street Journal, in an article commemorating the centenary of the renowned artist, Jackson Pollock . Here is a brief of Dave’s reaction to this “reunion.”

I read this article in the WSJ a short while ago and thought it to be interesting considering I spent literally hours absently gazing at these murals while I was studying many years ago, and I wonder what rubbed off? What was the effect they had on me seeing them day after day, sort of "getting it, but always too, not getting it" -- not knowing and not bothering to find out more about the history itself that prompted Orozco to create them? I hope to be in Hanover this summer and will no doubt revisit the murals as well as see this show at the Hood Museum. It offers a refreshing new dimension to me about Pollock as an artist. Here are a couple of the pictures from the Journal article which will trigger your memory bank a touch.

Dave is hopeful to be in Hanover over the summer to spend some more time with the Orozco Frescoes that surrounded us as students. Perhaps his observations would be a topic for the Sixtieth Reunion! Thanks for these Dave.

John and Barb Kennedy and Dick and Vivian Cahn report on the 70th Reunion of the Doolittle Raiders, the epic flight that turned the tide of World War II in the Pacific. The Doolittle Raider’s 70th Reunion was held at Wright Patterson AFB, Dayton, Ohio, April 17-20. 4 of the 5 surviving Raiders made it and 20 B-25s were on site. The B-25s were lined up on the tarmac with their crews and the Raiders greeted each crew in turn. We were able to walk the line of planes, chat with the crews and get up close and personal with the aircraft. . The four Raiders’ attending were COL Dick Cole – Doolittle’s copilot in plane No. 1; SSGT David Thatcher – engineer/gunner on plane No.7; MAJ Tom Griffin – navigator/bombardier in plane No. 9; and MAJ Ed Saylor – engineer/gunner on plane No. 15. Other highlights of the Reunion were a formation flyover of all 20 planes prior to the memorial service at the National Air Force Museum, a luncheon where the speaker was a naval historian who related the history of the Hornet, the carrier that launched the planes on the raid. Two CPOs who were part of the Hornet’s crew during the launch were there and were introduced to those attending. The other major event was a sumptuous banquet attended by 750 folks where each of the Raiders was escorted in to thunderous applause. Col C. V. Glines, retired Army Air Corps pilot and Raider Historian told the wartime history of each of them and a short history of the raid. Next year, the intent is to have the 71st Reunion at Fort Walton Beach and, God willing, I will be there. Since it is fairly close for you, Dave, maybe I’ll see you there. [You are on John and we will tour the Naval Aviation Museum together] and watch the world’s greatest demonstration team, The Blue Angels.

Richard Glissman and Bill Smith return to their Creator Richard, a noted architect, is a proud member of the Dartmouth College class of 1953. He earned his advanced degree in Architecture from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1956 and was a Board Certified Architect in Colorado where he began his career designing churches, schools, office building, all manner of large projects. He was contracted to design the University Center at Michigan and then remained there for 23 years as the University Architect. Richard and Jean, his wife of 59 years, loved to travel and made two around the world cruises among their many voyages, including one to the Antarctic. He also visited every state in the U. S.

Bill Smith became a Rufus Choate Scholar at Dartmouth and graduated Cum Laude with our incredible class. From Dartmouth he obtained his law degree from Case Western Reserve in 1956. After a tour in the Army, Bill practiced law as a litigator for an Ohio law firm before joining Texaco where he achieved the Associate General Counsel position for the firm. In 1976, he returned to Cleveland as a senior litigation partner in a Cleveland law firm. Bill is survived by his wife Janet, and their three daughters. His closing sentence in the Fifty Year Reunion book is beautiful. The best is yet to come. I had a nice note from Bill last year about the Newsletter wherein he pointed to a survey of the financial returns of varying College educations rather than the usual educational viewpoint, and it is fascinating to see how well our Dartmouth grads are doing. To quote Bill “Enclosed is a survey from a smart money, rather than an educational point of view. When I think back to starting compensation in the ‘50’s, it seems that today’s grads are getting quite a bang for their tuition bucks.” The best is yet to come. Right on Bill, and till we toast again.

“Other days are very near us, as we sing here soft and low, We can almost hear the voices of the boys of long ago. They are scattered now, these brothers, up and down the world they roam Some have gone to lands far distant, from the dear old college home Some have crossed the silent river, they are looking down tonight And the thought of these old brothers, makes our love now burn so bright.”

Financial Report from Dick Fleming, Class Treasurer

Many, many thanks to so many Members of the Class of 1953 Family who have generously paid their Class Dues this year - and in previous years too! Special thanks to the Class Widows who have so thoughtfully continued their family traditions of support for the Class of 1953. Thanks to ALL of YOU, we are no longer in the dire financial positions of the past several years. As of April 30, as many of you had paid Class Dues as in ALL of the previous year! On that date, we had a Cash Balance of $ 20,857.70; compared with a Cash Balance of $ 668.56 at the Start of the Fiscal Year on July 1, 2011. That is a rather astounding turn around and the Class thanks you all.

To those of you who have not paid Dues this year: please consider this a Request to Contribute. We want to be sure that we keep, and enhance, our financial position to be able to serve you and to serve Dartmouth. Many thanks again, and regards. Dick

Ed. note---with Dick’s incredible accomplishment of taking us from poverty to riches, we are recommending that he chair the next Bipartisan Committee to solve our nation’s Sixteen Trillion dollar debt problem. Flembo, you the man!!

The Hanover Scene from Fred Carleton Seven of us were at the May 1 '53 lunch at the Norwich Inn - Al Collins, Dick O'Connor coming from Lake George, Dr. Dave Siegal, our lunch organizer Bill Chamberlin, Chuck Reilly and Harlan Fair and myself. Harlan and Al Collins led a discussion on the 60th reunion planning. Harlan has had help from the '52's on their events and costs for this June. They brought in a handsome windbreaker jacket -beige with a simple classic emblem as a possible gift. All of us liked it. Reilly said the dollars for this year's Dartmouth Fund were coming in pretty well and we should be able to meet our goal of $200M + Al Collins and others proposed that wives and widows be invited to our monthly luncheons, and we all approved it.

We were saddened by the death of Dr. Jack Crisp late last November, and several of us went to the funeral service in December in Nashua, followed by a reception at the Nashua Country Club. Jack and his brother, Dr. Norman Crisp have been running a very highly regarded clinic in Nashua for many years. Jack had a number of classmates as patients. Jack and Caroline Patten, Bob and Carol Henderson, Dave & Michelle Florence, fellow Psi U's, and Dick Goodman were there. I drove down with Jay Davis '54 and his wife, Martha, close friends of the Crisps.

On the College scene, there was an article in The Valley News on Michael Odokara Okigbo. I first heard about him when he was the lead performer in the Dartmouth Aires singing group which competed with 4 other college groups in NBC's Sing-Off Contest last year. His rendition of "Somebody to Love" really put him on the map as a Superstar. The Aires won 2nd place in the Sing-Off, just a hair behind first. He's also made a dazzling record at Dartmouth in sports, politics, charitable causes in the US and Africa. He's remarkable and I hope I can convince Halloran to print the whole article. [Send it on Fred]

Nick Schwieger, Dartmouth's all-time leading rusher, signed a free agent contract with the St. Louis Rams toward the end of April. He's the only Dartmouth players to rush for 1,000+ yards in each of 2 Seasons, and for 3,150 yards for his career, 900 yards more than the previous record. He said "It was great to get a free agent deal and not simply a tryout". The Rams had a 2-14 record last year, tied for worst in the NFL. Let's hope Schwieger can help them do better.

The Rugby team was again the "winningest" team at Dartmouth with another undefeated season and the US National Championship

A year ago Bill and Elizabeth King were the only D53 residents at Kendal, the large retirement facility in Hanover. Then, Harlan and Anne Fair moved there last November. In January this year, the Kings and the Fairs invited Put and Marion Blodgett and Mitzi and me to Kendal for a delicious Sunday noon dinner. They do eat well over there, but it must be hard to keep your weight down. We're on the Kendal "Ready List", which we should be ready to go, but we have to wait until we can find a suitable apartment and that might take a year or so. The Blodgett’s are right behind us. Best to all. Fred Carleton, 56 Elm St., Norwich, VT 05055 [email protected]

July and August Class Notes for the Alumni Magazine from Mark Smoller Class Notes, July/August 2012

What age and time could not accomplish, Mother Nature attempted. She almost succeeded in derailing our Annual Ski Day at the Donovan’s by provoking an untoward storm just one day before the event. This storm, certainly unique for this year, precipitated a postponement of the Day for one week due to hazardous road conditions., Twenty-four had originally signaled their participation in at least some portion of this event prior to the storm, One week later seventeen stalwarts mushed out to the Donovan’s seeking exercise, mirth, and camaraderie. They were not disappointed. Partygoers were Marion and Put Blodgett, Mitzi and Fred Carleton, Bill Chamberlin, Russ Cook, Cynthia and Dave Donovan, Ann and Harlan Fair, Barbara and John Kennedy, Barbara and Alan Newton, Marilyn Paganucci, and Bonnie and Dave Siegal. Some skied; more sated themselves with après ski cocktails and a lovely dinner at Lake Sunapee Country Club. Harlan Fair, our chairman, writes that plans are being finalized for our 60th Reunion, June 10-13, 2013. Activities will be centered around the Inn corner with reunion headquarters being the Paganucci Lounge of The Class of 1953 Commons. Breakfasts and one of our banquets will be in the ‘53 Commons. . Newly renovated New Hampshire will be our residence hall. . The Hanover Inn, also recently renovated is perfectly located for our events. We will reserve rooms at the available hotels as needed. We have scheduled events at other significant newly constructed buildings on campus: the 1978 Life Sciences Building and the new Visual Arts Center. We are planning some interesting seminars in addition to our usual impressive Memorial Service, hiking on Moosilauke, and Tuck, Medical School and Thayer lunches. Dave Halloran reports via Bert Melcher that Hank Edler was honored at the Colorado Governor’s Mansion on April 18th for his steadfast and outstanding contributions to The Dartmouth Alumni Association of the Rocky Mountains. The honor comes in the form of the Wheelock Award for Lifetime Service to DARM. Hank is the second-ever recipient of this prestigious honor which was bestowed unanimously on Hank by the Club’s Board, according to their president, Dr. Ray Gottesfeld, MD Dartmouth ‘73. Way to go, Hank! Mark H. Smoller, 4 Schuyler Drive, Jericho, NY, 11753; (516) 938-3616; [email protected]
