A Pattern of Sustainable Development between Myth and Reality Elisabetta Moroa,* aUniversity of Naples Suor Orsola Benincasa, via Suor Orsola 10, 80135 Napoli, Italy Abstract This paper deals with the Mediterranean Diet as a potential tool for increasing knowledge and promoting a sustainable development especially in least developed and developing regions. The confirmation of the MD as an Intangible Heritage of Humanity, recognized by UNESCO in 2010, is producing a significant social effect in the seven nations and communities involved. In addition in 2012 the MD has been included by the FAO at the top of the list of the most sustainable diets in the planet. The double recognition of this life style is generating a new approach to this cultural heritage by the stakeholders who are progressively recognizing that it may become a new tool to develop green economy and eco-tourism. To this end the author analyses the real and mythological genealogy of the MD in order to bring out its cultural, economic and social potentiality. © 20162016 The The Authors. Authors. SRNT 26th ANNUAL MEETING new orleans maRCH 11-14, 2020 RAPID RESPONSE ABSTRACTS The peer-review process for SRNT’s annual meeting entails review by Society members of abstract submissions. Criteria for acceptance/rejection are based upon methodological rigor and not the funding resource or research findings. The views expressed by conference presenters are the author’s own and do not necessarily represent that of SRNT. 2020 Paper Sessions immediately prior to placement in a 20” x 9” x 18” open chamber for measurement of somatic withdrawal signs. Guide canulae were surgically implanted prior to any nicotine exposure. Results: Nicotine rats infused with vehicle into the IPN showed elevated RAPID SESSION 1: PRE-CLINICAL somatic withdrawal signs independent of route of nicotine exposure, suggesting that the procedures and surgery did not confound observation of withdrawal measures. Local IPN infusion of αCTXMII significantly attenuated withdrawal as measured by a reduction in somatic signs compared to nicotine withdrawn rats infused with vehicle in the IPN. Conclusions: The observation of this novel finding using two independent models of nicotine withdrawal suggests that α3β2* nAChR and/or α6β2* nAChR contribute to POD26-1 this measure of nicotine dependence and may be effective targets to promote nicotine CHANGE IN FREE BASE NICOTINE DELIVERY AS FUNCTION OF cessation in individuals who vape or smoke. January 9, 2009 The Honorable President-Elect Barack Obama Presidential Transition Team Headquarters 451 6th Street, NW Washington, DC 20001 Dear President-Elect Obama: We urge you to take bold and urgent action to reverse the obesity epidemic. The epidemic of overweight and obesity in children and adults is undermining the nation’s health analogous to the way global warming is undermining the planet’s health. The increased rates of obesity, almost an inevitability in a society whose wealth disfavors physical activity and whose poverty prevents healthy diets, will negate our nation’s investments in health-care and could actually lead to life spans for today’s youths that will be shorter than their parents’. Addressing obesity could be one of the most powerful means of improving the health of the nation. The harms caused by obesity are well-known and considerable: hypertension, heart attacks, strokes, diabetes, cancer, arthritis, and many others. Together those maladies contribute each year to as many as several hundred thousand deaths and tens of billions of dollars in medical and other costs. Obesity also causes serious psychosocial problems, including difficulty making friends, discrimination in the workplace, and depression. Countless experts—health professionals, government officials, academics, and nonprofit organizations—have offered strategies for combating obesity: a Surgeon General’s Call to Action, conferences like the National Summit on Obesity Policy, whole organizations like Shape Up America!, policy prescriptions in the medical literature, and the like. But the government has done little, and obesity rates have continued to spiral upward. What is lacking is not well-conceived ideas for policies and programs, but a national commitment to wage a comprehensive campaign to prevent and reverse overweight and obesity, a war that should begin in the womb and infancy, extend to schools, then include workplaces, doctors’ offices, and the general community. -

A History of CVD Epidemiology Institutions Contents Introduction The National Heart Institute, National Heart Act, and Advisory Heart Council The USPHS Heart Disease Control Program and Centers for Disease Control The American Heart Association and its Scientific Council on Epidemiology and Prevention The UK Medical Research Council The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine The WHO Cardiovascular Disease Unit Founding and Evolution of International Cardiovascular Societies References Introduction In mid-twentieth century, a few pioneers mobilized to develop an independent branch of medical science in CVD epidemiology and preventive cardiology. Along with their ideas, institutions formed to provide guidance and support to the new research. The investigators and the institutions were closely bound from the outset in their mutual need, one for support and the other for viable programs. The researchers’ creativity drove the research agenda of the new agencies, and the agencies, in turn, enthusiastically supported the investigators’ new undertakings and careers. CVD prevention research flourished, particularly in the U.S., especially due to the post-war expansion of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and its funding. NIH was abetted by the new public role of the American Heart Association with its expanded view of community service, research and public policy in prevention. Interest in CVD prevention research also grew in Europe, if not at such a galloping pace, where government and science, scientist and administrator, were more distant and their relations more nuanced. The early planning and methods conferences called by the new institutions led to a collegial body that enjoyed its emergence as a pioneering scientific community with an international voice.
