A History of the Bank of Japan, 1882-2016
WINPEC Working Paper Series No.E1719 October 2017 A History of the Bank of Japan, 1882-2016 Masato Shizume Waseda INstitute of Political EConomy Waseda University Tokyo,Japan A History of the Bank of Japan, 1882-2016 Masato Shizume (Waseda University) 1. Introduction In this paper, we review the history of the Bank of Japan (BOJ) with a focus on the changing role of the central bank and the transformation of the national economy (Table 1). When Japan joined the modern world in the late 19th century as a country with a small and open economy, the Bank was created as an entity to integrate the national financial market and provide liquidity for economic growth. By the early 20th century, Japan had succeeded in joining the modern world and began pursuing its goal as an empire. Under this condition, the Bank played a pivotal role in financing wars and in stabilizing the less-disciplined national financial market. Yet during and after Japan’s losing war with its main trading partners in the 1930s and 1940s, the Bank was overwhelmed by ballooning government debt and rampant post-war inflation. When Japan re-focused its national goal on high economic growth during the 1960s and early 1970s, the Bank was revived as an engine to fuel liquidity into the national economy even without legal independence. Once the Japanese economy reached an advanced stage of development from the 1970s onward, the Bank’s main task changed from providing liquidity for economic growth to stabilizing the domestic economy. In pursuing its task, the Bank has often faced trade-offs between guns and butter, stability and growth, the threat of economic backlash and the moral hazard problem. -

The Japanese Economy During the Interwar Period
20092009--JE--21 The Japanese Economy during the Interwar Period: 両大戦間期Instabilityの日本における恐慌と政策対応 in the Financial System and ― 金融システム問題と世界恐慌への対応を中心にthe Impact of the World Depression ― Institute for Monetary and Economic Studies 金融研究所 鎮目雅人 Masato Shizume 2009 年 4 月 May 2009 The Japanese economy during the interwar period faced chronic crises. Among them, the Showa Financial Crisis of 1927 and the Showa Depression of 1930-31 marked turning points. The Showa Financial Crisis of 1927 was the consequence of persistent financial instability because of the incomplete restructuring in the business sector and postponements in the disposal of bad loans by financial institutions. The crisis brought reforms in the financial sector through large-scale injections of public funds and the amalgamation of banks. The Showa Depression of 1930-31 was caused by the Great Depression, a worldwide economic collapse, which had been intensified in Japan by the return to the Gold Standard at the old parity. Japan escaped from the Great Depression earlier than most other countries through a series of macroeconomic stimulus measures initiated by Korekiyo Takahashi, a veteran Finance Minister who resumed office in December 1931. Takahashi instituted comprehensive macroeconomic policy measures, including exchange rate, fiscal, and monetary adjustments. At the same time, the Gold Standard, which had been governing Japan’s fiscal policy, collapsed in the wake of the British departure from it in September 1931. Then, Japan introduced a mechanism by which the government could receive easy credit from the central bank without establishing other institutional measures to govern its fiscal policy. This course of events resulted in an eventual loss of fiscal discipline. -

The myth of the unbeatable fighter is just that, a myth. In what will go down as the single most memorable UFC fight in history, Ronda Rousey was not only defeated, but systematically destroyed by a fighter and a coaching staff that had spent years preparing for that night. On 2/28, Holly Holm and Ronda Rousey were the two co-headliners on a show at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The idea was that Holm, a former world boxing champion, would impressively knock out Raquel Pennington, a .500 level fighter who was known for exchanging blows and not taking her down. Rousey was there to face Cat Zingano, a fight that was supposed to be the hardest one of her career. Holm looked unimpressive, barely squeaking by in a split decision. Rousey beat Zingano with an armbar in 14 seconds. -

Neither Facial Aggressiveness Nor Facial Width to Height Ratio Are Related to Fighting Success
Neither facial aggressiveness nor facial width to height ratio are related to fighting success Thomas Richardson, Anam Bhutta, Elena Bantoft, R. Tucker Gilman Abstract There is a growing consensus that there is information in a man’s face about how formidable (big and strong) he is. Recent work in mixed martial artists has shown that there may be facial correlates of fighting success. Fighters with more aggressive looking faces, as well as higher facial width to height ratios (fWHR), win a greater percentage of their fights. This has been used as evidence that human males may have evolved to signal and detect formidability using facial features. However, all previous studies have used datasets that may have considerable overlap, so it is important to replicate these effects in new samples. Moreover, some studies show that facial width to height ratio is correlated with body size, which may have confounded associations between fWHR and fighting success. The present study attempted to replicate and expand previous findings in 3 samples totalling several hundred professional fighters taken from several combat sporting leagues. I also tested whether head tilt affected ratings of aggressiveness, as previous studies have found conflicting effects. Overall, I found no significant links between fighting success and fWHR or facial aggressiveness. Tilting the head up or down both made a fighter’s face look more aggressive. Interestingly, there was only low- moderate agreement between raters on the apparent aggressiveness of a given face. Further, I found that facial width to height ratio was related to body size, and that body size mediated the link between fWHR and perceived aggression. -

Mixed Martial Arts 1 Mixed Martial Arts
Mixed martial arts 1 Mixed martial arts Mixed Martial Arts Patrick Barry (Blue shorts) and Mirko Filipović (Checkered shorts) in the co-main event of UFC 115 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Also known as Vale Tudo, No Holds Barred (NHB), Cage Fighting, Ultimate Fighting, Pride Fighting, Sougo Kakutogi Focus Various Hardness Full contact Olympic sport No Mixed martial arts (MMA), popularly known as cage fighting or ultimate fighting is a full contact combat sport that allows a wide variety of fighting techniques and skills, from a mixture of other combat sports, to be used in competitions. The rules allow the use of both striking as well as grappling techniques, both while standing and while on the ground. Such competitions allow fighters of different backgrounds to compete. The roots of modern mixed martial arts can be traced back to various mixed style contests that took place throughout Europe, Japan and the Pacific Rim during the early 1900s. The combat sport of Vale Tudo that had developed in Brazil from the 1920s was brought to the United States by the Gracie family in 1993 with the founding of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Professional MMA events had also been held in Japan by Shooto starting back in 1989. In due course the more dangerous Vale Tudo style bouts of the early UFCs were made safer with the implementation of additional rules, leading to the popular regulated form of MMA seen today. Originally promoted as a competition with the intention of finding the most effective martial arts for real unarmed combat situations,
