  • We Want to Welcome Back All of Our New and Returning Students to Kettering
We want to welcome back all of our new and returning students to Kettering. A lot has taken place while you were away. As you drive into Kettering, you will notice “Rick’s Ranch” on your right. Rick, our parking lot attendant, will now be able to spend more time monitoring the events that take place in the parking lot, regardless of the weather. Please smile and wave to him during your visits here. Inside the building, many technological upgrades have occurred in the classrooms which will help to make the educational process more effective. As you walk through Kettering, you will notice that many of the drinking fountains have been retiled and fitted with a bottle filling spout. This will save countless numbers of plastic bottles from being discarded in the trash. To date, we have saved 3,159 bottles from becoming a part of a land fill. Thanks to all who are utilizing this feature. We would like to welcome our new staff members to Kettering: Mrs. Mary Jacques will be joining our Foreign Language department; Ms. Jennifer Mayle will be taking on many of the duties of the Physical Education and Health departments; Mr. Matt Lumetta will be working with Vocational Options; Ms. Heather Wiley joins us in the position of Social Worker; Ms. Jodi Zwiren who has joined the Language Arts department and has taken the reins of WKHS Television; and Ms. Katie Reed who will be joining the Special Education department. We would also like to welcome Mr. Steve Garrison as our new Assistant Principal and Mrs.

  • How American Idol Constructs Celebrity, Collective Identity, and American Discourses
AMERICAN IDEAL: HOW AMERICAN IDOL CONSTRUCTS CELEBRITY, COLLECTIVE IDENTITY, AND AMERICAN DISCOURSES A Dissertation Submitted to the Temple University Graduate Board In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy By Amanda Scheiner McClain May, 2010 i © Copyright 2010 by Amanda Scheiner McClain All Rights Reserved ii ABSTRACT This dissertation is a three-pronged study examining American themes, celebrity, and collective identity associated with the television program American Idol. The study includes discourse analyses of the first seven seasons of the program, of the season seven official American Idol message boards, and of the 2002 and 2008 show press coverage. The American themes included a rags-to-riches narrative, archetypes, and celebrity. The discourse-formed archetypes indicate which archetypes people of varied races may inhabit, who may be sexual, and what kinds of sexuality are permitted. On the show emotional exhibitions, archetypal resonance, and talent create a seemingly authentic celebrity while discourse positioning confirms this celebrity. The show also fostered a complication-free national American collective identity through the show discourse, while the online message boards facilitated the formation of two types of collective identities: a large group of American Idol fans and smaller contestant-affiliated fan groups. Finally, the press coverage study found two overtones present in the 2002 coverage, derision and awe, which were absent in the 2008 coverage. The primary reasons for this absence may be reluctance to criticize an immensely popular show and that the American Idol success was no longer surprising by 2008. By 2008, American Idol was so ingrained within American culture that to deride it was to critique America itself.

“Be a Fan, Not a Hater”: Identity Politics and the Audience in American Idol Published on Ethnomusicology Review (https://ethnomusicologyreview.ucla.edu) “Be a Fan, Not a Hater”: Identity Politics and the Audience in American Idol By Katherine Meizel - University of California, Santa Barbara This article is an expanded version of the Ki Mantle Hood Prize-winning paper presented at the SEMSCC 2006 Conference in San Diego, California. Biography Katherine Meizel is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where she is completing a dissertation about identity politics in American Idol . Her research for this study also contextualizes the show in terms of civil and sacral religion, democracy promotion, and the transnational music industry. She has also received a doctorate and master's degree in vocal performance, from UC Santa Barbara and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, respectively. Her doctoral research in vocal performance addressed Eastern Mediterranean Sephardic tradition in diaspora and in Western art song settings. Abstract The televised singing competition American Idol is remarkable for its interactive nature. Its audience ostensibly becomes an active social agent, influencing the narrative of the reality program in a weekly voting process. This audience does not exist in a vacuum, but is socially constructed through viewers’ relationships with the media industry, with each other, and, notably with the “characters” on the show. Politics of identity figure considerably in the formation of the audience, as viewers create special meaning from their televisual experience through identification with the contestants. Their support is motivated not only by the singers’ talent, but also by an interest in markers of regional, ethnic, or religious associations.

Dave Isaac Bio E-Mail: [email protected] Experience- Producer/Mix Engineer/Educator Growing up in Detroit in the 60's when the streets sang and flourished with the sound of Motown and all of its artists, the Soul of Aretha Franklin, Jackie Wilson, and many Gospel artists, proved to be the training camp of life for Dave Isaac. As a boy, he watched fellow Detroiters every night in front of the living room television, musically taking over the world. Dave became involved in the music industry as a young musician at the age of 12, as Detroit evolved into the place for Funk bands in the 70’s from the likes of Funkadelic (which he briefly worked with), or Rock from Bob Segar. He became an Engineer and Programmer as it became the home of R&B, Techno, and Gospel from artists like Anita Baker, DeBarge, The Winans, or Juan Atkins in the 80’s (all which he worked with), then he became a Producer in the 90’s as Hip-Hop and Rap made its mark in Detroit from such artists as Eminem, and J. Dilla, all which explains the energy in the environment of Detroit. After working with artists like R. Kelly, Stevie Wonder, El Debarge, Aaliyah, KEM, Aretha Franklin, Barry White, The Clark Sisters, Thomas Whitfield, Fred Hammond, Anita Baker, and more, Dave decided to make the move to Los Angeles, California. Upon arrival, he worked with such artists as Madonna, Michael Jackson, Puff Daddy, Babyface, Billy Idol, Whitney Houston, Bette Midler, Kenny Rogers, and more within his first eight months in L.A.! Dave soon met and began to work with Bass Legend and Producer, Marcus Miller, and from there he used all of his talents with such artists as Luther Vandross, Eric Clapton, Wayne Shorter, David Sanborn, and Roberta Flack, to films such as “I Think I Love My Wife”, “Head Of State”, “Love Jones”, “The 6th Man”, “Serving Sara” and more, to television’s “Everybody Hates Chris” series, and producing the Funk ride at the opening of Seattle’s “Experience Music Project”.
