Discussed how a free on-line membership to the American Urological Association for urology residents in training in Armenia could help bring better patient care, as well as providing educational materials, including curriculum, videos and journals. The presentation highlighted various ways to assist the Republic of Armenia in advancing health care, especially urologic training and practice standards and how to bring about new and advanced urologic techniques to the people of Armenia. The overarching theme of the presentation was the various methods available to impart knowledge and skills to young medical professionals, through organizing training courses, cooperation with various medical centers and contributing to the advancement of health care system in Armenia and Artsakh. MKRTICH PORTUKALIAN AND THE “ARMENIA” JOURNAL (FROM TERRORISM TO SKEPTICAL MODESTY) (MIGIRDİÇ PORTUKALYAN VE “ARMENIA” GAZETESİ (TERÖRİZMDEN ŞÜPHELİ BİR ILIMLIĞA) Prof. Dr. Jean-Louis MATTEI Abstract: Mkrtich Portukalian is one of the most significant figures in the Armenian revolutionary movement, but there is a general lack of knowledge about his activities and work. This applies to the famous journal of “Armenia” published in Marseille from 1885 to 1923 by Portukalian in Armenian. In this paper, the period under research especially entails the years 1914, 1918, 1919, 1921, 1922 and 1923. We will try to convey Portukalian’s personality by referring to various sources. In the second and third section, we will address the “Armenia” journal by frequently reminding that the revolutionist’s personality identifies with his journal. Keywords: Mkrtich Portukalian, “Armenia”, Armenian Revolutionary Movement Öz: Mıgırdiç Portukalyan Ermeni devrimci hareketindeki en önemli kişilerden birisidir, ancak faaliyetleri ve çalışmaları konusunda genel bir bilgi eksikliği dikkat çekmektedir. Anahtar Kelimeler: Mıgırdiç Portukalyan, “Armenia”, Ermeni Devrimci Hareketi Almost everyone could come to an agreement on the great significance of Mkrtich Portukalian in the Armenian revolutionary movement, but Review of Armenian Studies 65 No. 24, 2011 Prof. Dr. Jean-Louis Mattei even the Armenians do not know much regarding his personality and what he has done.

  • Armenian Genocide Refugees, the League of Nations, and the Practices of Interwar Humanitarianism
Keith David Watenpaugh Between Communal Survival and National Aspiration: Armenian Genocide Refugees, the League of Nations, and the Practices of Interwar Humanitarianism In Aleppo, Syria, home to the largest community of descendants of survivors of the Armenian Genocide in the Middle East, a map greets visitors at the entrance of the Karen Jeppe Jemaran (preparatory high school), showing the boundaries of the medieval kingdom of Armenia overlaid with the borders of ‘‘Wilsonian Armenia,’’ a geographical construction drawn by the American president as the victors of World War I divided the Ottoman Empire among themselves. This map (fig. 1), which Wilson presented to the Paris Peace Conference in 1920, has become an epitomizing image of a lost homeland, affixed to the walls of Armenian schools, cultural centers, and churches throughout the world. For diasporan Armenians, it is a reminder of a nation-state once promised them in the wake of an attempt to destroy them as a people, then briefly established and finally lost as the principle of national self- determination was sacrificed by the League of Nations and the United States, Britain, and France in the face of the military and political ascendancy of the Republic of Turkey and its integration into the international order.1 It is also a stark reminder of the real limits of American power in the interwar period, even at the very apex of that power in the early 1920s.2 While the relationship between Armenians and Armenia and the League of Nations, especially in the League’s first decade, bears out a history in which Armenian national aspirations were abandoned, shifting and evolving member states’ attitudes and League policies still affected the status, position, and even survival of Armenian refugee communities and individuals.

The program also sponsors quarterly public lectures aimed at bringing the history and cultural topics surrounding modern day Armenia to the broader Orange County community. On December 16th, founding supporters of Armenian History, Dr. Garo Tertzakian and Mrs. Sylvie Tertzakian, hosted their annual fundraiser for Armenian History and raised over $20,000 to support continued course offerings within the Humanities. This marks the fifth year Armenians from the Orange County community gathered to raise funds in support of the growth of Armenian history at UCI. Also made possible through generous gifts to the program, the 2012 Armenian History Lecture Series, included lectures by Richard Hovannisian on “The Changing Landscape of Historic Western Armenia: Reflections on a Journey into the Past,” Talinn Grigor on “Dolling-up Yerevan Avant-garde Urbanism in Post-Soviet American Politics,” Houri Berberian on “Connected Revolutions: Armenians and the Russian, Ottoman and Iranian Revolutions of the Early Twentieth Century,” and “The Karabakh Conflict From Ceasefire to Safarov” with Levon Marashlian.
