As the Infinite Crisis piece of a crossover event, some plot elements were featured in tie-in issues of other publications. Since its initial publication, the series has been reprinted in various formats and editions. The idea for the series stemmed from Wolfman's desire to abandon the DC Multiverse depicted in the company's comics—which he thought was unfriendly to readers—and create a single, unified DC Universe DCU. At the start of Crisis on Infinite Earthsthe Anti- the Monitor's evil counterpart Infinite Crisis unleashed on the DC Multiverse and begins to destroy the various Earths that it comprises. The Monitor tries to recruit heroes from around the Multiverse but is murdered, while collaborates with the villains to conquer the remaining Earths. The story's events resulted in the entire DCU being rebooted. The series was a Infinite Crisis for DC and has been reviewed positively by critics, who praised its ambition and dramatic events. The story is credited with popularizing the idea of a large-scale crossover in comics. DC Comics is an publisher best known for its stories featuring characters including BatmanSupermanand . The Anti-Monitor recruits Psycho-Pirate to his Infinite Crisis, infusing him with part of his power to manipulate the heroes of Earth-4, Earth-S and Earth-X against the rest; this fails when all five Earths enter the limbo universe. Harbinger then recruits heroes from the remaining Earths to lead an assault Infinite Crisis the Anti-Monitor in the antimatter universe, using Alexander Luthor Jr. Pariah tracks down the Anti-Monitor at his fortress, and the heroes destroy a Infinite Crisis, powered by stellar energy, used to destroy the last five Earths; the injured Anti-Monitor retreats and Infinite Crisis. The Anti-Monitor meanwhile creates a new body for himself, and tries to use an antimatter cannon to penetrate the limbo universe and destroy the five partially merged Earths. The villains fail, and Krona continues his experiment. The Anti-Monitor waits for Alex Luthor to reopen the portal between the positive and antimatter universes, capturing the heroes, but a magically empowered Spectre creates an energy overload which shatters space and time. The five Earths merge into a single shared universe, and the superheroes return to the present; only those present at the dawn of time remember Infinite Crisis original realities. A cosmically empowered Anti-Monitor attacks again, transporting the new Earth to the antimatter universe and summoning a horde of shadow demons. In this final battle the Anti-Monitor, reduced to a flaming head, crashes into a star and is killed by the Earth-Two Superman. As they are the only four who remember Infinite Crisis original past, Alex sends Earth-Two Superman, Earth-Two Lois LaneEarth-Prime and himself to a pocket "paradise" dimension, leaving the heroes of the remaining Infinite Crisis to sort out the aftermath of this crisis. Despite Infinite Crisis limited marketing [28] and DC being unsure if the series would be successful, Crisis on Infinite Earths was a bestseller. Goldstein called Wolfman's idea to simplify the DCU bold and unprecedented, noting the story's Infinite Crisis size and saying the story Infinite Crisis "unbelievable", if somewhat aged. Superman tells him of the people that used to live on Earth-Two, including Infinite Crisis world's version of Batman, who grew up to get married and have a child. When Batman asks him if the of Earth-Two is better than , Superman says no, which is what Batman believed and takes out the in Infinite Crisis possession. But, since are only Infinite Crisis by the Kryptonite of their dimension, this Kryptonite has no effect on Kal-L who uses his heat vision to destroy it and leaves to go back to his wife in the Fortress. He uses the Psycho-Pirate to use his power on to say the word , which powers up the tower, and Earth-Two is recreated with the people native to that world, Infinite Crisis the Justice Society, Kal-L and his wife Lois, are transported there. However, Lois Infinite Crisis still weak from their travels, and eventually dies. Kal-L lets out a huge scream, which shatters the glass around him, and cracks the concrete beneath him. Kal-L berates them for not being perfect, but Superman tells him that a perfect Earth doesn't need a Superman, which stops Kal-L and he goes back Infinite Crisis the body of his wife. After Infinite Crisis healed from his fight with Superboy-Prime, Superboy goes to Titans Tower and finds only , with the other Titans dealing with the disasters around the globe, they are the only ones who go to the tower in Arctic, where they are joined by , and they launch an attack on Infinite Crisis tower and free the heroes plugged Infinite Crisis it. Meanwhile in Japan, Doctor Light notices that the Flash has returned, but it's Bart, Infinite Crisis aged and in his grandfather's uniform. He tells them that Superboy-Prime escaped the Speed Force wearing Infinite Crisis armor based on the Anti-Monitor's that constantly feeds him yellow sunlight. With the tower activated, Alex fires Infinite Crisis beam at Kal-L that brings back the rest of the Multiverse, sending the rest of the people of Earth to their native Earths, including Earth-S, Earth, and even Earth-Three. Alex sifts through the Earths and tries to merge different Earths together in order to create the perfect Earth. Kal-L realizes that Alex has been using him all this time and flies with Superman and Wonder Woman back to Earth-One, but they don't know where it is since the sky is covered with dozens of parallel Earths. Superboy-Prime goes to the tower and Infinite Crisis the heroes, and gets Alex to stop merging different Earths together and to find Earth-Prime. The two Superboys resume their fight, with the infinitely-powered psychopath clearly beating Kon-El by breaking his wrist. Instead, Superboy flies into Prime and they both go through the tower, destroying not only it, but Alex's Multiverse, bringing all of the Earths back together and remerging the Earths back into one New Earth, sacrificing his life when the two Supermen, Wonder Woman, and Batman arriving too late as Superboy dies in Wonder Girl's arms. Oracle and Martian coordinated the Infinite Crisis superheroes as they tried to contain as many escapees as possible. The Six reappeared and managed to Scarecrow as to what the Society planned to do next. Scarecrow told them the Society was going to use the escaped villains to launch a massive assault on Metropolis as the first step towards world domination. Superman and the Superman of Earth-Two took down Doomsday. Alex Luthor attacked the heroes but his powers began to fade. Batman tried to kill him but was talked out of it by Wonder Woman. Just then a collapse of some debris separated Alex Luthor from the heroes. The battle then came to a close with the heroes triumphing and the Society facing heavy losses. Superboy-Prime, knowing that he can't bring back Earth-Prime, flies out of the battle at light speed, planning to go to Oa and absorbing Infinite Crisis Green Lantern Central Power Battery Infinite Crisis create a Big Bang to his preferences. The alerts the other heroes of Prime's plans through telepathy and tells those who can fly to Infinite Crisis after him. They take him through the remains of , and then through the red sun Rao, which destroys his armor, and they all Infinite Crisis onto the Green Lantern planet Infinite Crisis, where Superboy-Prime kills Kal-L by pummeling him to death and almost does the same with Kal-El, saying that when Kal-El is gone, then he will be Superman. At that, Kal-El rips the S-shield off Superboy-Prime's chest, saying that he will never be Superman because he has no idea of what it means to be Superman, that it isn't about power or the symbol but about what he does with it. After Kal-El defeats Superboy-Prime, the Green Lantern Corps show Infinite Crisis to destroy the Kryptonite that fell on the planet and to encase Superboy-Prime in a holding casket until he is brought to Oa for imprisonment. Power Girl weeps as her Earth-Two cousin dies, fearing that she will be left alone again, but Infinite Crisis assures her that he will always be with her even if she can't see him, for he now sees what his wife has seen when she died. As the heroes return to Earth Infinite Crisis mourn for their dead, Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman find themselves needing time to recover, not just physically but also spiritually as heroes. As Diana flies Infinite Crisis in her invisible jet to find out who she really is, and Batman goes on a journey with Dick Grayson and to rebuild Batman, Clark joins with his wife Lois, realizing that even though he will need time to recharge his powers, the Earth will be in Infinite Crisis good hands with enough heroes present to take care of things.
