PRESENTATION “Without music life would be a mistake” Friedrich Nietzsche The idea of organizing the International Guitar Festival “Ferran Sor”, in the city of Barcelona, originates in the desire to promote and raise awareness of the life and work of the eminent Catalan composer and guitarist, born in Barcelona in 1778. This festival is intended as the most effective way in which to pay homage to Ferran Sor i Muntades, the most important musical personality in eighteenth-century guitar history. The works of this extraordinary composer, concert performer and pedagogue are well known. His music is still performed by famous guitarists and students of today, and published by the most prestigious music publishers of the world. Thanks to its great expressive power and versatility, the guitar has always been a dynamic and heterogeneous medium, which has been able to adapt to many different musical styles and be part of innumerable ensembles. With the festival, the city of Barcelona is presented with an important opportunity to keep alive the memory of one of its most important and influential personalities; not only for his musical legacy as a whole, but also for what he contributed to the classical guitar canon. Giuliano Belotti, artistic director Núria Viladot, executive director 3 2. THE FESTIVAL The International Guitar Festival “Ferran Sor” is, first of all, a unique opportunity to attend live concerts by internationally renowned musicians. During the week of its second edition, the festival will feature concerts and master classes by Marcin Dylla, Carles Trepat, José Antonio Escobar, Nora Buschmann, the duo Tamayo-Montesinos and Emerson Salazar, winner of the Miguel Llobet Competition 2016. Drawing on the typology of festivals celebrated elsewhere, the festivals that more likely draw attention of the public, in general, and of music professionals and students, in particular, are those that offer a real and active exchange between citizens and participants by events of high artistic quality. It is not enough to organise first-class concerts, it is also necessary to create workshops and activities that offer participants the opportunity to be the real protagonists of the festival, to encourage the exchange of new ideas and to improve new skills and teaching methods. For this reason, besides concerts, master classes will be given by concert performers who are participating in the festival. These classes will also give guitar students the opportunity to take lessons with some of the most renowned guitarists in the world. The festival will also offer the possibility to guitar aficionados, teachers and pedagogues to attend the master classes as listeners and observers. The professional audio video recording of all events and interviews of the festival will be used to create an archive dedicated to Ferran Sor. This archive will be available on the festival’s website (www.festivalsor.com). 4 3. ACTIVITIES 3.1 Evening concerts During the festival´s first edition, six concerts by Marcin Dylla, Carles Trepat, Nora Buschmann, José Antonio Escobar, the duo Marco Tamayo – Anabel Montesinos will take place. Each artist has been chosen for his own undeniable artistic qualities and his international recognition. The closing concert will comprise performances by the three best students participating in at least one master class and Emerson Salazar, winner of the Certamen Internacional de Guitarra Miquel LLobet 2016. 3.2 Master Classes The pedagogical importance of the International Guitar Festival "Ferran Sor" is highlighted: during a week, there will be master classes given by each invited artist, for a total daily duration of 5 hours and 15 minutes, which will accommodate seven students, each of which will receive a 45 minute lesson. The festival will also offer the chance to benefit from these classes for those who want to attend as listeners. 3.3 Lectures The Festival will present a cycle of four lectures and a documentary, from Tuesday to Saturday, from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm, at the Teatre Regina. The first one will be held by the luthier Santiago Canals who will talk about the construction of the concert guitar and those used by Ferran Sor. The other three lectures will be centred on the figure of Ferran Sor and will be held by guitarists, musicologists and composers: Josep María Mangado, author of the book “La Guitarra en Catalunya, 1769-1939”, Luis Gàsser, author of the book “Estudios sobre Fenando Sor”, and Jaume Torrent. The documentary, “Emili Pujol, Teacher of Life”, directed by Maria Ribera Gibal, will be projected on the last day of the Festival. 3.4 Competition and awards The best masterclass student of the International Guitar Festival Sor will receive a diploma and a prize consisting in a paid concert for Art LLobet 2018, in Barcelona, and in the production of a professional video and audio recording (max. 10 minutes) that will be published on the website and social networks of the International Guitar Festival “Ferran Sor”. 3.5 Exhibitions The International Guitar Festival Ferran Sor will also accommodate and be of interest to guitar makers, music publishers, record labels, and string and guitar accessories manufactures. The exhibition will open on Monday, September 4th at 5 pmand will end on Wednesday 6th at 7 pm. It will take place at the first-floor hall of the Music School Joan Llongueres (just above the Regina theatre). Exhibitors who wish to stay more days, are welcome and they can exhibit until Saturday 9that 7 pm. Each day, from Tuesday to Saturday, from 1 pm to 1:30 pm, a guitar test of luthiers’ instruments participating in the Festival will be held by the invited artists, at the Regina Theatre. In addition, on September 5th, at 11 am, a guided tour through luthiers’ and exhibitor’s stands will be held by luthier Santiago Canals, to give the opportunity to personally know and appreciate concert guitars and luthiers from all over the world. 5 4. The distinction of its thematic material, and its use in cyclical form, is reinforced by an ultimately victorious motto theme. The F major Quartet was written later, but remained unfinished, but it too is a fertile creation with a strong dance profile. Both works are heard in Alf Årdal’s imaginative arrangements for string orchestra. Arne Nordheim, Norway’s leading living composer, wrote Rendezvous as a quartet but expanded it in 1986. It is an intense, moving, and beautifully crafted work. Stephan Barratt-Due has been artistic director of the Barratt Due Institute of Music since 1985, a conservatory in Oslo founded in 1927 by his grandparents and now one of the main educational institutions of music in Norway. Barratt-Due is among the leading violin professors in Scandinavia, and under his leadership the Oslo Camerata has become increasingly in demand both nationally and internationally.

  • Guitar in Oxford Music Online
Oxford Music Online Grove Music Online Guitar article url: http://www.oxfordmusiconline.com:80/subscriber/article/grove/music/43006 Guitar (Fr. guitare; Ger. Gitarre; It. chitarra; Sp. guitarra; Port.viola; Brazilian Port. violão). A string instrument of the lute family, plucked or strummed, and normally with frets along the fingerboard. It is difficult to define precisely what features distinguish guitars from other members of the lute family, because the name ‘guitar’ has been applied to instruments exhibiting a wide variation in morphology and performing practice. The modern classical guitar has six strings, a wooden resonating chamber with incurved sidewalls and a flat back. Although its earlier history includes periods of neglect as far as art music is concerned, it has always been an instrument of popular appeal, and has become an internationally established concert instrument endowed with an increasing repertory. In the Hornbostel and Sachs classification system the guitar is a ‘composite chordophone’ of the lute type (seeLUTE, §1, andCHORDOPHONE). 1. Structure of the modern guitar. Fig.1 shows the parts of the modern classical guitar. In instruments of the highest quality these have traditionally been made of carefully selected woods: the back and sidewalls of Brazilian rosewood, the neck cedar and the fingerboard ebony; the face or table, acoustically the most important part of the instrument, is of spruce, selected for its resilience, resonance and grain (closeness of grain is considered important, and a good table will have a grain count about 5 or 6 per cm). The table and back are each composed of two symmetrical sections, as is the total circumference of the sidewalls.

Running away from home at the age of thirteen he made his way to Costa Ria, South America, the United States, and then to England. This adventure was supported by his performances. Going to Germany in 1874 he was admitted to the Leipzig Conservatory as a pupil of Jadassohn and Reinecke. Returning to Spain he obtained a grant from Count Morphy, a high dignitary under King Alfonso XII, which enabled him to continue his studies at the Brussels Conservatoire where he studied composition with Gevaert and piano with Brassin.
