  • A Tribute to Mccoy Tyner
Is This Jazz?: Passion Reverence Transcendence — A Tribute to McCoy Tyner On December 11, the legendary jazz pianist McCoy Tyner turned 80 years old. A few months earlier, I received an album by the trio of pianist Benito Gonzalez, drummer Gerry Gibbs and bassist Essiet Okon Essiet that was conceived and recorded as a tribute to Tyner’s musical genius and legacy, and released on Whaling City Sound this past April. Unfortunately, I never got around to sitting down with the album and giving it a proper listen, but Tyner’s 80th birthday made me think now would be as good time to dig into this album: Passion Reverence Transcendence. If anyone was ever going to question how much passion this trio was bringing to this project, then any doubt would be furiously extinguished in the first seconds of the opening track “Fly With The Wind,” a McCoy Tyner classic. They come out slinging fire, playing this chart at full tilt. This explosiveness segues well into “Just Feelin’,” which imbues Tyner’s chart with a contemporary, slightly fusion sound with the use of the electric bass and the loose half-time groove, followed by the heavy swinging “Rotunda,” which is a brilliant showcase for the pocket of Gibbs and Okon Essiet. The arrangement and production on the intro to “Festival In Bahia” are a lovely reprieve before launching into another full on sonic boom, this time with some interesting Afro-Cuban rhythms and a range of percussion. By the time I reached track 5, “Blues On The Corner,” I was itching for a new feel and the trio delivered with a wonderfully laid-back blues on which everyone hangs back without losing any of the momentum they’ve established over the first third of this album.

Number One. January, Voices Edited by THOMAS MOULT F. V, BRANFORD NEVILLE CARDUS LOUIS QOLDINQ J. H. WARD BERNARD WRIQHT AND THE EDITOR ONE SHILLING NET. ACH VOICE SPEAKS E AN INDIVIDUAL AND INDEPENDENT VISION. CONCERNING -VOICES" MONTHLY X 7 ' ONE V O1CCS SHILL1NG In Poetry and Prose Edited by Thomas Moult OICES is a monthly magazine which was founded immediately upon the Declaration of VArmistice in the belief that the barren years in the Arts since August 1914 were about to be followed by a rich period of aspiration among young artists towards the utmost freedom and strength of expression. * For such freedom it was felt that no contemporary journal could, in the nature of things, provide a worthy medium. The purpose of VOICES was unique in that the magazine would be the first monthly periodical for many years in which definitely Creative Art was to take chief prominence and to occupy practically all its pages. in which a group of writers would be represented by their latest and ripest work . a group that was not a "clique" and which would receive the perpetual stimulus of new blood ... in which neither question of space nor of topic would enter, nor political theories and ethical predispositions be regarded or dis regarded; this, of course, signifying that artistic depreciation would be welcomed equally with artistic appreciation of Lenin alongside of the Divine Eight of Kings. The artistic worth of the com position was to be the one and final test. CONCERNING "VOICES" VOICES, indeed, to quote a passage by Bernard Wright from one of the early issues, was to stand for that "generation which returning now from war with the naked epergy born of sheer force of living in their eyes shall cleave with their utterance to the heart of things.

  • H-E-L-L-O in Five Notes: a Call Back to the Real Megan Kincaid and Summer Sloane-Britt
H-E-L-L-O in Five Notes: A Call Back to the Real Megan Kincaid and Summer Sloane-Britt “Just saying hello from Cali.” The multimedia artist and filmmaker Cauleen Smith concluded an Instagram post on March 17, 2020 with a tender salutation, informing her followers that she would be posting her films featured in public exhibitions that had unexpectedly and rapidly closed until further notice at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.1 The artist began this impromptu online program with H-E-L-L-O—a 2014 short film that embodies a search for connection in a time of crisis in its title and content. Originally commissioned for the exhibition EN MAS’Carnival and Performance Art of the Caribbean (Contemporary Arts Center, New Orleans, 2015), H-E-L-L-O represents the performance traditions of the New Orleans Second Line during the Carnival Season. The city, still recovering from the physical and psychological damage of Hurricane Katrina, emerges as a site of creative recuperation through Smith’s formal cathexis on the charged public spaces that punctuate the urban landscape. Combining elements from the artist’s repertoire of source material––including critical transpositions of the subcultural ravines of science fiction, Third World Cinema, and New Orleans jazz––the film constructs a surreal imaginary within the material reality of the city. By conjuring the wondrous dimensions of film and music, Smith allows her rigorous rumination on New Orleans to turn in on itself. More than a documentarian’s representation of the city’s contested histories, this film foregrounds the possibility of rejuvenation and recovery through creative practice.

Milestone Label Discography Milestone Records was established in New York City in 1966 by Orrin Keepnews and Dick Katz. The label recorded mostly jazz with a small amount of blues. The label was made part of Fantasy Records in 1972. Since that time it has been used as a reissue label in addition to new jazz recordings. Milestone has also reissued many historic jazz recordings, including the Jelly Roll Morton, King Oliver and the New Orleans Rhythm Kings recordings that were originally made in the 1920’s by Richmond Indiana label Gennett Records. This discography was compiled using Schwann catalogs from 1966 to 1982 and information from the Michael Fitzgerald website. www.JazzDiscography.com 2000 Series: MLP 2001 - The Immortal Ma Rainey - Ma Rainey [1966] Jealous Hearted Blues/Cell Bound Blues/Army Camp Harmony Blues/Explainin' The Blues/Night Time Blues/'Fore Day Honry Scat///Rough And Tumble Blues/Memphis Bound Blues/Slave To The Blues/Bessemer Bound Blues/Slow Driving Moan/Gone Daddy Blues MLP 2002 - The Immortal Johnny Dodds - Johnny Dodds [1967] Rampart Street Blues/Don't Shake It No More/Too Sweet For Words/Jackass Blues/Frog Tongue Stomp/C.C. Moving Images Against The Current The Aesthetics and Geopolitics of (Im)mobility in Contemporary Europe by Nilgun Bayraktar A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Performance Studies and the Designated Emphasis in Film Studies in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Shannon Jackson, Chair Professor Miryam Sas Professor Deniz Göktürk Fall 2011 Moving Images Against The Current The Aesthetics and Geopolitics of (Im)mobility in Contemporary Europe © 2011 by Nilgun Bayraktar Abstract Moving Images Against The Current The Aesthetics and Geopolitics of (Im)mobility in Contemporary Europe by Nilgun Bayraktar Doctor of Philosophy in Performance Studies and the Designated Emphasis in Film Studies University of California, Berkeley Professor Shannon Jackson, Chair This dissertation investigates the historical and contemporary tensions around mobility and identity in Europe since WWII, with particular emphasis on their contemporary configurations. Drawing on recent theories of migrant and diasporic cinema, moving image art, and mobility studies, I provide close and historically situated readings of films, videos, and installations within a larger historical and geographical scope of European migration that encompasses the Middle East and Africa. The films and videos I study establish a non-Western countergeography of Europe that has produced multiple “others” in its constant efforts to recompose its borders and identity. They address psychological and sociological processes of integration and cultural syncretism as well as discrimination and racism against minorities and migrants. Although the geopolitical focus of my dissertation is Europe, the works I analyze challenge territorially bounded conceptions of identity and culture.
