If you are a high school student or a parent of one, the new GCAMP website (www.gcamp.org) offers important information about manufacturing, a significant component of the American economy. Manufacturing supports about 17.6 million jobs in the U.S. (one in six private sector jobs). The Manufacturing Institute and Deloitte Consulting estimate that there will be a shortage of 3 million skilled manufacturing workers over the next 10 years. The website is an excellent tool to assist families in making critical post-secondary education decisions. GCAMP works with school districts 211 and 214 helping students to secure engineering and manufacturing internships primarily in the summer months. Check out the GCAMP website next spring for opportunities. You can also find videos of high school students after company visits on Manufacturing Day (Oct. 2, 2015). Curbside Trash Can Size Limit reminder As a reminder, the rules of the Village curbside waste and recycling program limit the size of trash cans that can be placed at the curb to 32 gallons. Additionally, the trash cans must have handles and weigh less than 50 pounds. These limits exist for the safety of the drivers who have to lift the cans and empty them into the truck. Toters rented from Waste Management are permitted to be larger, because they are compatible with equipment on the trucks which lifts and empties them. Prescription Drug Takeback Day - April 30, 10am - 2pm On Saturday, April 30, 2016 the Elk Grove Village Police Department will be participating in the National Take-Back initiative. On this date the Police Department will coordinate their efforts with other law enforcement agencies across the country in an effort to remove potentially dangerous controlled substances from homes. The National Take-Back initiative provides an opportunity to surrender expired, unwanted, or unused pharmaceutical controlled substances and other medications. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high—more Americans currently abuse prescription drugs than use cocaine, hallucinogens, and heroin combined. Studies show that most abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition to the annual Take-Back Initiative, prescription drugs can be dropped off throughout the year at the Fire Administration counter in the lower level of the Village Hall, 901 Wellington Ave., 8:30a.m. - 5p.m. Monday thru Friday.

Holiday Lights Recycling The Village is accepting unused and non-working Holiday string lights and extension cords as part of the SWANCC Holiday Lights Recycling Program. SWANCC and participating communities have partnered with Elgin Recycling Inc. to recycle the lights and cords. Strands are separated and baled and sent to be chopped or shredded and sold as a commodity to foundries and mills. Most importantly they are kept out of the landfill. Residents can drop off their unwanted holiday string lights and extension cords at the Village’s Community Development counter, located on the first floor of the Elk Grove Village Municipal Complex, 901 Wellington Ave., Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. now thru March 31, 2016. 8 | ELK GROVE VILLAGE FEBRUARY 2016 ISSUE

I-290 Interchange Project Update The Tollway is rebuilding the I-290 Interchange at I-390 (Elgin O’Hare) to create direct access with free-flow traffic movements to and from I-390 in all directions. As of January 2016, four new I-290 Interchange ramps are now open to traffic, including the flyover ramp from westbound I-290 to westbound I-390 and the ramp from eastbound I-290 to westbound I-390, creating new, free-flow traffic movements to the west and eliminating the signalized intersection at Thorndale Avenue. Elmhurst Road I-90 Interchange Project Update The Elmhurst Road Interchange Project, which will complete the existing partial I-90 interchange is scheduled for completion in 2016. In addition, northbound traffic is reduced to one lane over Higgins Creek to allow for rebuilding and widening the southbound side of the Higgins Creek Bridge. The new ramps on the east side of the bridge are open and all traffic traveling to and from the east is being moved to those ramps. The existing loop ramps on the west side of the bridge will be permanently closed to allow for construction of new ramps that will carry traffic to and from the west. Traffic in both directions has been shifted onto the new southbound Elmhurst Road Bridge. This will allow for the demolition of the old Elmhurst Road Bridge and the start of construction on the new northbound Elmhurst Road Bridge.
