Citizens scroll incessantly to receive updates on case numbers. Journals are working overtime to publish, and regulators have green-lighted vaccines in record time. Ehsan Masood, an editor with the journal Nature in London, reflects on a year that has been unlike any other in his 25-year career in science communication. Target Audience: This webinar is open to academicians, scientists, and general public from all the member OIC states and beyond. Profile of Speaker: Ehsan Masood is a science journalist. He is presently Nature’s Editor for Editorials and also has responsibility for the journal’s news coverage from Africa and the Middle East. He is the author of a a number of books including The Great Invention, a narrative history of how GDP became the world’s most influential economic indicator (Pegasus, 2016) and Science and Islam: A History (Second edition, Icon, 2017). He has also made documentaries on science and policy for BBC Radio 4 and was a 2017/2018 Knight Science Journalism Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Between 2007 and 2017 he taught science and innovation policy to students of science communication at Imperial College London. Professor Michael Wilmore (Executive Dean - Faculty of Media and Communication, Bournemouth University) Professor Michael Wilmore’s academic career spans more than twenty-five years, several disciplines, and positions both in the UK and Australia. He has held posts as Associate Dean (Learning Innovation) at Swinburne University of Technology, Melbourne, and Associate Dean (Education) at the University of Adelaide, initially in the Department of Anthropology, but for the majority of time in the Department of Media, including more than three years as Head of Department. His experience in university leadership encompasses extensive work on curriculum development, information and communication technology projects, collaborations with industry and other education providers, as well as finance and workload management. He has been an active researcher on a number of projects funded through competitive research grants. Each has involved extensive interdisciplinary and industry collaborations, ranging from media organisations in Nepal to the antenatal department of a large hospital. His research interests primarily concern development and health communication, but he has also completed educational research and a project on fieldwork practices in archaeology, which was his first area of study as an undergraduate at the University of Exeter. Islam and Science: An Educational Approach International Workshop Sharjah, UAE – April 18–21, 2014 Speakers’ Short Bios Co-organized by Université Interdisciplinaire de Paris, France Rana Dajani is an associate professor in molecular biology at the Hashemite University in Jordan. A Fulbright alumna, she does research in genome-wide studies of diabetes and cancer in ethnic populations in Jordan, as well as stem cells and bioinformatics. She is an expert on the topic of evolution and Islam. Dr. Dajani was the main organizer of the fourth scientific research conference on cancer in Jordan, a consultant on a number of committees, a driver in the network for women mentors and mentees, and the “We Love Reading” program for children, which received the Synergos award for Arab world social innovators and a membership in the Clinton Global Initiative 2010. She was chosen as one of the 20 most influential women in the Islamic world and ranked number 13 in the list of 100 most powerful women in the Arab world, 2014. Nidhal Guessoum is Professor of Physics and Astronomy and Associate Dean at American University of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates. He has published several books on science with direct or indirect relevance to Islam, dozens of scholarly papers in astrophysics, and numerous articles on science, education, and culture. He has also organized two conferences (and co-edited the proceedings) on the application of astronomy to Islamic problems and a number of workshops on science and Islam/religion around the world. Bruno Abdelhaq Guiderdoni is the Director of the Observatory of Lyon, France.
