  • Eptember/October 2019
Newtonmore Camanachd Club Newsletter September/October 2019 1] On the Field It has been a case of highs and lows for both senior teams this season. The biggest high was of course the historic fourth in a row Camanachd Cup winning triumph v Oban in Fort William which was thoroughly deserved. This came on the back or a real run of injuries the effects of which have continued. The 1st team have now had 4 consecutive league defeats which has not happened in the last fifteen years, so here's hoping that is a temporary blip! The second team, with a number of young players, have been surprisingly in contention for both North 1 and by reaching the final of the Strathdearn Cup. However poor discipline has directly affected results particularly the Strathdearn defeat and the top of the table clash with Glengarry when three players were suspended. [The 2nd team disciplinary record is the worst in the recent past, with more bookings and suspensions this season than in the three seasons from 2015 to 2017 combined]. The under 17s have done really well reaching the London Shield Final after beating a strong Oban Camanachd side in the semi final over two legs. They are already beaten finalists in the Mactavish junior cup. Our Primary School got to all three finals in their competitions and despite not winning any of them there are some really talented players coming through and I would expect us to be contesting more finals in the coming years. 2] MIDAS Would anyone be willing to do the MIDAS course on Sunday 17th November and then be available from time to time to drive the second team minibus? There is no charge for attendance.

We started off with no set framework except the desire to enjoy and discover more books. We have at the end of this time found that being given a book which one would not nec- essarily choose to read has proved to be very rewarding.

With funding support from Stratherrick & Foyers Community Trust, Councillors have put in place proven lifesavers. As well as the original machine at Stratherrick Village Hall, very kindly privately donated to the community, new machines can be found at The Whitebridge Hotel, Foyers Stores & Post Office and Loch Ness Shores Caravan & Camp site (see photos). This is great news; but here’s a question for you “If you needed to use one, could you?” Think about that – a friend, family member or a total stranger is in difficulty – would you know what to do? Well, you’ll be delighted to hear that your Community Council is going to solve that problem for you! Training courses are being organised at each site open to anyone who wants to avoid having to say “If only I’d known what to do!” Dates for training will be posted on the Council’s website, Trust website and noticeboards. FOREWORD As my first year in office comes to an end I am pleased to be able to advise that our small team of staff have been very busy during the year and that the same is true of our volunteer Directors on the Board. I am sure that you would join with me in thanking them all for the contribution which they have made to the sport of shinty. We must not forget the large number of people who give freely of their time to serve on various sub committees. Our game would simply not function without their help. This year, one such volunteer, Donald Skinner, retired as Chairman of the Behaviour in Sport Committee after many years of loyal service. The contribution make by Donald and others in similar posts simply cannot be measured and I would like all involved in our sports to be more aware and more appreciative of the work being carried out by our long list of volunteers. The position vacated by Donald has been filled by another stalwart of the game. John Mackenzie brings with him a vast knowledge of shinty and an aptitude for seeking out justice. Unfortunately, I regret to have to report that his services have been required far too often this year. Several unsavoury incidents have occurred hitherto unheard of in our sport.
