Hand Saws Hand Saws Have Evolved to fill Many Niches and Cutting Styles

Some saws are general purpose tools, such as the traditional hand saw, while others were designed for specific applications, such as the keyhole saw. No tool collection is complete without at least one of each of these, while practical craftsmen may only purchase the tools which fit their individual usage patterns, such as framing or trim. Back Saw A back saw is a relatively short saw with a narrow blade that is reinforced along the upper edge, giving it the name. It uses a relatively long blade with numerous crosscut teeth designed to remove material while pushing and pulling. Bow saws are used for trimming trees, pruning, and cutting logs, but may be used for other rough cuts as well. Coping Saw With a thin, narrow blade, the coping saw is ideal for trim work, scrolling, and any other cutting which requires precision and intricate cuts. Coping saws can be used to cut a wide variety of materials, and can be found in the toolkits of everyone from carpenters and plumbers to toy and furniture makers. Packing a Crosscut
PACKING A CROSSCUT SAW As most folks know, there seems to be no shortage of available wilderness trails that need to be cleared every year using people powered equipment. The standard method of carrying crosscut saws on stock is to carry them on pack animals. Any method of packing a crosscut saw on a pack animal does take some time and care to install the teeth guard, load and unload. This can be a real time consuming hassle if you're working your way along a trail with sporadic windfalls. Everyone that takes part in this form of sadistic recreation, (err rewarding work), does not have a pack animal. And even if you have pack stock, it is just one more animal to contend with on the trail. I have had good luck packing up to a seven foot bucking saw and related equipment on my saddle horse. That is, the horse I ride also packs my saw, handles, axe, wedges, undercutter, kerosene, and lunch. I normally use a good-sized horse, but smaller horses could easily pack a five or six-foot saw, and some of the other equipment could be shared with others in the work party if necessary. Many people that pack and use crosscuts for wilderness trail work use falling saws. The lighter limber falling saws are easier to be bend over a pack or loop and tie on top of a pack. However, I am a big fan of using the right tool for the job. If I am going out to buck logs then I take a bucking saw. -

Sendenb aSpace Dynamics Laboratory, 1695 North Research Park Way, North Logan, UT 84341;bRSP Technology, Metaalpark 2, 9936 BV, Delfzijl, The Netherlands ABSTRACT Aluminum mirrors and telescopes can be built to perform well if the material is processed correctly and can be relatively low cost and short schedule. However, the difficulty of making high quality aluminum telescopes increases as the size increases, starting with uniform heat treatment through the thickness of large mirror substrates. A risk reduction effort was started to build and test a ½ meter diameter super polished aluminum mirror. Material selection, the heat treatment process and stabilization are the first critical steps to building a successful mirror. In this study, large aluminum blanks of both conventional AA-6061 per AMS-A-22771 and RSA AA-6061 were built, heat treated and stress relieved. -

The information I’m sharing here is based on my own journey into blacksmithing and watching many beginners get started and seeing their challenges and frustrations. How do you want to approach blacksmithing? Do you want to gain experience by making your own tools or would you rather get to forging metal? Something in between? It’s good to think about this and form a game plan. It’s super easy to get bogged down in the process of making tools when all you really want to do is move hot metal. Heritage Bamboo Fly Rods Heritage Bamboo Band Saw Jig James E. (JED) Dempsey – Maker [email protected] Congratulations on your purchase of my Heritage Bamboo Band Saw Jig and continuing in the tradition of famed bamboo rodmakers such as Payne, Leonard, Halstead, Gillum and Uslan. As an apprentice at Payne under the tutelage of Walt Carpenter, I sawed many bamboo culms in preparation for them going on the Payne saw beveller. I am also the owner of the Uslan bamboo saw which uses a table saw blade that is very similar in design to my current jig except that we are using a band saw instead. Why a band saw? The answer is simple – less waste. A table saw blade is .125” or more thick and the band saw blade is usually .025” to .030” thick. That means for every 3 strips you get using a table saw, I get 4 strips or more depending on the width of strip you choose to cut. Using the procedures I have laid out below, you will get uniform straight strips that require little or no straightening. This produces time savings and eliminates a number of issues that split strips present. The one thing you will discover that “run out” is a myth promulgated by amateur rodmakers to justify splitting. Again, remember the great production rod companies and great classic rodmakers that today’s rodmakers try to copy and emulated all sawed cane and run out was never a real issue with them. The only exception was Garrison. One of the issues most of today’s rodmakers worry about sawing and working cane is generation of saw dust.
