High Power Shooters

On a sunny Sunday in June we had a full line with 13 shooters for the Old Soldier March. The high- light of the day was the appearance of Sgt. Sir Harvey Gertson of Her Majesty’s Royal Foolaseers straight back from his deployment to South Africa putting down those pesky Boors. Sir Harvey was attired in his Dress Red tunic and white helmet. However, conspicuously absent from his tunic were his several medals for bravery and general foolhardiness. Sir Harvey proceeded to demonstrate his skills at arms shooting his Lee Enfield No. 4T rifle in the Old Soldier Match for a 10th place fin- ish score of 259 out of 300. Pip, Pip, Old Boy!

We had some pretty stiff competition with the Old Soldier , which are standard issue military ri- fles from World War 2 vintage or older. The top 9 shooters had scores over 260! 2nd, 3rd, and 4th were separated by 1 point! 2nd and 3rd being decided by X-count, Outstanding shooting, Gentle- men! 1st Place - Gary Thorson, 292-4X, U.S. Rifle Model 03-A3 2nd Place - Rod McDonald, 279-5X, U.S. Rifle Caliber .30 3rd Place - Damian Longmire, 279-3X, Lee Enfield No. 4 4th Place - Tom Schuettke, 278-6X, U.S. Rifle Caliber .30 M1 Garand 5th Place - Gary Baldwin, 267-5X, Lee Enfield No. 1 Mk 3

Honorable mention goes to Fran Huntington who handicapped himself with an 1884 Trapdoor Spring- field in .45-70, lobbing football sized projectiles, in a football arc out to 200 yards for a score of 231- 4X. You read that right - 4 of them in the X ring! Teddy Roosevelt would be proud.

Following the Old Soldier match, we held our popular “So you think you’re a Sniper, Huh?” chal- lenge. The course was 3 prone shots at a 6-inch gong at 200 yards, followed by 1 kneeling and 1 standing shot at an 8-inch gong at 100 yards. We had 4 shooters with 3 hits each, and a 3-way tie between Rod McDonald, Gary Thorson, and Tom Schuettke with 4 hits each. After an extended sud- den death shoot-off that consumed so many rounds that we lost count, Rod McDonald finally came out the victor.

And with Rod being on a winning streak, we then went into the .22 long rifle rapid fire silhouette fun match. The targets are 10 steel rectangles at 25 and 50 yards, and 5 steel pigs at 75 yards. We have 2 shooters on the line at a time, and you are on the clock to knock down 25 targets as fast as you can. Rod came out on top again posting both of his times under a minute, for the fastest time of 53 seconds to knock down his 25 targets.

ATTENTION SHOOTERS

The use of armor piercing and tracer ammunition at Capital City Rifle & Pistol Club is strictly forbidden!

One or more shooters have been shooting the steel gongs at the High Power range with armor piercing ammuni- tion. This ammunition has pierced the AR500 hardened steel gongs. Because of this vandalism, the gongs have been removed.

This past week, shooters using tracer ammunition started a fire in the brush above the 200 yard berm at the High Pow- er range. The Littlerock Fire Department had to respond to put the fire out. This had the potential to become a disas- ter. We were very fortunate (this time) that the Fire Department was able to put the fire out.

Please read and abide by the range rules posted at each shooting range.

Volunteers Needed

The CCRP Maintenance Manager, Terry McManus, needs volunteers.

One on-going project is mowing grass. Between now and about mid-July, mowing needs to be done weekly. After about mid-July, mowing needs to be done every other week.

Also, from time to time, Terry needs “handy-man” type of help. Terry would like to know if you can do things like car- pentry, painting, electrical, etc. He’d like to make a list of club members that he could call now and then when these type of projects arise.

Please phone Terry at 360 352-0196 if you can volunteer.

Match Directors, Board members, and those in charge of each range are invited to list in the Plinker their upcoming vol- unteer needs by calling John Wicklund, 360-438-5971. He will compile and update the list each month.
