RACING RETURNS TO CAMARERO SUNDAY SATURDAY=S BREEDERS= By Bill Finley CUP WORKOUT REPORT Puerto Rico=s Camarero racetrack will run a special one-day card Sunday, the first time the track has raced since the country was devastated by Hurricane Maria. The track last raced Sept. 14. Sunday=s card does not mean racing is ready to return on a full-scale basis at Camarero. The purpose of the mini-card is to give horses preparing for the Clasico Internacional del Caribe an opportunity to race. The race will be held Dec. 9 at Gulfstream, is worth $300,000 and is restricted to horses from Latin American countries. This will be the first time the race will have ever been run in the U.S. Puerto Rican based horses have won the race eight times. The leading country in terms of wins is Panama with 15. Due to the problems Puerto Rico is still enduring, getting information out of that country or reaching racing officials there remains difficult. However, Gulfstream General Manager Bill Badgett Jr., said he believes there is a requirement that horses " " " have qualifying races before being eligible to run in the Clasico Internacional del Caribe. It may also be that the horses performing on the card may simply need a race since there have been no opportunities of late for them to run in Puerto Rico. The Equibase entries include only one race on the card, but TDN has learned there will actually be three. The main event is a mile-and-a-sixteenth race that includes many of the top horses on the island, several of whom are aiming for the Gulfstream race. The Equibase entries list the purse as $0. The top horse in the field appears to be Justiciero (Coach Billy G.). He has won four straight races, three of them Grade I events. He will be ridden by Juan Carlos Diaz, Puerto Rico’s leading jockey. Because racing has been shut down in Puerto Rico, Diaz recently relocated to South Florida and is riding at Gulfstream Park West. Justiciero is one of four horses in the eight-horse field. Another race will be for riders who are currently enrolled in Puerto Rico’s jockey school and the third event will be a trial Abel Tasman | Sarah Andrew race for 2-year-olds. >WARRIOR= SEALS WINX RECORDS HISTORIC COX PLATE THREE-PEAT BALLYDOYLE=S WORLD RECORD A crowd of 32,617 packed into Melbourne=s Moonee Valley Racecourse on Saturday to witness history, and Winx (Aus) (Street Cry {Ire}) gave them what they came for when digging deep to hold off Humidor (NZ) (Teofilo {Ire}) for a third consecutive win in the A$3-million G1 Cox Plate. In doing so, Winx became just the second horse to win three renewals of the country=s weight-for-age championship, following Kingston Town in 1980-82. She beat her own track record, set winning this race two years ago; she became Australia=s richest-ever racehorse with A$15,578,000 in the bank; she equaled Black Caviar=s tally of 15 Group 1 wins, and recorded her 22nd straight victory. A bit fractious in the barriers, Winx broke sharply-- something she had not always done this prep--and was eased back by Hugh Bowman to sit midpack and three-wide into the first turn as Gailo Chop (Fr) (Deportivo {Fr}) took up the running Ryan Moore drives home Saxon Warrior to give Aidan O=Brien his 26th and Humidor saved ground last of eight and on the fence. Group 1 victory this year | Racing Post Cont. p13 There was a feeling of destiny at Doncaster on Saturday and >TDN Rising Star> Saxon Warrior (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) duly delivered the world-record-setting 26th Group 1 success for Aidan O=Brien=s Ballydoyle stable in 2017 in the feature G1 Racing Post Trophy. Sent off the 13-8 favourite coming off a win in the G2 Beresford S. over this mile trip at Naas Sept. 24, the bay was left exposed in the strong wind heading the main pack as the Ballydoyle and Bolger pacemakers set off in isolation. In front before the quarter pole, he was headed soon after by Roaring Lion (Kitten=s Joy) and looked temporarily beaten, but Ryan Moore was in no mood to be denied and Saxon Warrior found something more in the final 100 yards to carve out a neck success from that rival and provide the stable with an eighth renewal, with Ballydoyle=s fellow >TDN Rising Star> The Pentagon (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) 2 1/2 lengths back in third. An idea of the impact Winx has made on Australia=s racing public AHe travelled very strong throughout the race and Ryan gave Bronwen Healy him a brilliant ride,@ his trainer said.
