37Th Annual Nineteenth-Century French Studies Colloquium University of Pennsylvania and Villanova University 27-29 October 2011, Philadelphia, PA Law & Order / La loi & l’ordre: 37th Annual Nineteenth-Century French Studies Colloquium University of Pennsylvania and Villanova University 27-29 October 2011, Philadelphia, PA ABSTRACTS Helen Abbott, Bangor University Bending the laws of poetry in Baudelaire, Banville and Mallarmé This paper sets out to analyse how poets in the mid-to-late nineteenth century in France distort, manipulate or completely abolish accepted rules of poetry. It will focus on contemporary poetic treatises in conjunction with what poets say about their poetry. Banville’s own treatise will form a pivotal text in my analysis, but I will start with a close-reading of Baudelaire’s octosyllabic sonnet, ‘Épigraphe pour un Livre condamné’, published in 1861, in the wake of his 1857 trial for Les Fleurs du Mal. As a text which signals how Baudelaire bends the laws of poetry, he also outlines how he expects his readers to be capable of grasping the clever subtlety that his manipulations entail. What critical and poetic texts of this era reveal, then, is that prescriptive legislation surrounding poetic endeavours is not done away with altogether, but the emphasis shifts so that a new aesthetic criteria, the art of listening to poetry, takes centre stage in the debate over poetic validity and status. Like Baudelaire, Mallarmé is uneasy about explaining poetic techniques to the public, but when he does so, he uses legislative vocabulary, as his pivotal ‘Crise de vers’ text demonstrates. The influence of Banville’s prosodic theories on Mallarmé is made clear by his recognition that Banville provides an ideal example of how the alexandrine line can open itself up to greater flexibility, whilst not yet requiring a total dissolution of prosodic rules. The challenge, then, for poets of this era is not getting rid of the laws of poetry altogether, but learning ways of bending them to fit a poetry in a state of crisis. Joseph Acquisto, University of Vermont Voyager du politique au poétique chez Baudelaire et Rancière Cette communication vise à explorer la loi poético-politique tel qu’elle s’énonce chez Jacques Rancière et telle qu’elle est appliquée au « Voyage » de Charles Baudelaire. Dans La chair des mots, Rancière définit la révolution lyrique moderne comme une nouvelle façon d’accompagner le « dit » et de le rythmer comme un voyage. Cette notion de voyage implique par conséquent un rapport à un « nous », ce qui lie le poétique au politique et qui fait en sorte qu’il en dépend. La nouvelle liberté du poète, c’est celle de se soustraire de l’obligation de la représentation, ce qui dépend, selon Rancière, d’une nouvelle politique du sensible, d’une nouvelle façon de rendre le mot présent au monde. Nous voyons de manière particulièrement marquée cette tendance vers la poétique « moderne » dans la transition entre l’édition de 1857 des Fleurs du Mal et celle de 1861. La nouvelle fin des Fleurs crée un sens de communauté même si le poète se présente en général plus cynique à l’égard de la possibilité d’un rapport à autrui. L’édition de 1857 se ferme sur l’artiste, le dernier poème étant « La mort de l’artiste », tandis qu’en 1861, c’est « Le voyage » qui clôt le volume; en faisant cette substitution, Baudelaire passe de la possibilité de l’éternel à un « nous » page 2 of 121 qui émerge dans l’immédiat de l’expérience. Cette communication interrogera le statut changeant du « nous » dans ce poème à la lumière des idées poético-politiques de Rancière, qui sont, selon l’aveu de l’auteur, inspirées la notion baudelairienne d’ « hypocrite lecteur ». Emily Adams, University of Pennsylvania “Le quartier Notre-Dame-de-Lorette descend!”: The lorette and the Popular Invasion of the Arts In this paper, I argue that claims that the social type of the lorette figured anxieties surrounding the bourgeoisie’s rise to cultural and economic dominance tell only part of her story: portraits of the lorette reflect just as powerful of anxieties related to a threatened increase in the power and influence of popular classes. Evidence of these anxieties, hiding in plain sight in the portraits and physiologies written by Alhoy, Dumas père and Gautier, in Gavarni’s images, and in popular literature, provides a crucial piece in our understanding of the role of the lorette in the mythology of the modern artist. The lorette did not materialize fully-formed to inhabit the “new” bourgeois spaces that were constructed to service a new bourgeois social order; she carries with her the mark of her origin, a prehistory that shaped and gives new meaning to her aggressive interactions with mid-nineteenth-century Parisian society. Concerns over a popular invasion of the aesthetic sphere comes at a time of both general anxiety and genuine fascination around the popular, working classes in Paris, ranging from critics hoping to control, contain and eliminate nefarious influence of these populations, to thinkers who, recognizing their positive potential, undertook the project of their salvation, or even the salvation of the whole of French society through them. I analyze the lorette’s alternative genesis – her obscure birth to working-class or poor provincial nobodies, her half-baked education and her dabbling in pseudo-artistic endeavors – which serves as a prelude to her astonishingly successful invasion of a world off-limits to her progenitors. Recontextualizing the lorette’s cultural arrival, I show just why her invasion held revolutionary potential and thus shed on the lorette’s principle function within broader mythology of the modern artist. De jeunes nobles participent aux complots contre Napoléon au moment de la transition entre Consulat et Empire. Encouragés par la sublime Laurence de Cinq-Cygne avec la collaboration de Michu, homme de '93 mais qui sert "la justice de Dieu" contre l'injustice humaine incarnée dans la personne de Malin, devenu comte de Gondreville et sénateur, ils sont d'abord graciés, puis condamnés. Michu, "noble victime," est exécuté. Histoire socio-politique donc, poursuivant de façon nonpareille les thèmes de la justice et de la police. Le narrateur accomplit "le devoir d'un historien" contre "un complet oubli des faits antérieurs les plus graves." La Justice, après la religion et la royauté la "plus grande machine des sociétés," est présentée avec une incroyable accumulation de détails dans La justice sous le code de Brumaire an IV et dans la dernière partie, Un Procès Politique Sous l'Empire. "Personne aujourd'hui, si ce n'est quelques vieux magistrats, ne se rappelle…" Procédure judiciaire profondément injuste, grâce au (faux) enlèvement de Gondreville, après quoi la Société retourne page 3 of 121 à "ses intérêts dévorants." Quant à la police, le narrateur pose des questions essentielles sur "ces hommes de génie…si bas quand ils pouvaient être si haut?" "Est-on homme de police comme on est penseur, écrivain, homme d'Etat…à la condition de ne savoir faire qu'espionner…?" Même opposition entre les titres Les chagrins de la police et Revanche de Corentin. Kate Aid, University of Pennsylvania “Trop d'exotisme!”: Colonial Objects in the House of Decadence Male authors writing decadent French fiction at the end of the nineteenth century broke generic and social codes to emphasize artifice and neurosis over naturalism and bourgeois morality. Melanie Hawthorne, Janet Beizer, and Rachel Mesch have pointed out that Rachilde, a woman who simultaneously authored decadent tropes and claimed to be a product of decadence's preferred pathologies, broke the unruly rules of her fellow authors. The difficulty of categorizing Rachilde's relationship to her strong female characters and to the non-normative genders and sexualities in her novels has led some scholars to identify her double rule-breaking as queer disorder. In La Jongleuse (1900), autoeroticism, 'perverse' chastity, voyeurism, improvised erotic lexicons, and personalized pornography do queerly break heteronormative orders of social station, marriage, and procreation. However, I argue that in this novel decadence emerges not only from generic chaos, but from the self-conscious deployment of excessive exoticism. The novel's sexual deviations arise in the house where Éliante Donalger, créole widow of a French naval captain, cohabitates with the collected riches of empire. Her erotic history and desires emerge through the presence of an ancient Tunisian vase of suggestively human silhouette, erotic Chinese figurines refashioned in wax to resemble Éliante, and the memory of her Martinican maid's contributions to her love letters. This colonial order of people, objects, and trade corrupts normative romance tropes and enables non-normative sexual practices. While it is tempting to recover and recuperate Rachilde's novels as queer literature and theory, we must also consider the racist and colonialist foundations of their queerness. This paper will situate La Jongleuse within the context of colonial markets and circulation. How can the colonial order of the decadent home lead us to a postcolonial reading of decadence, and help to consider this genre's relationship to the fin-de-siècle state of the French empire? Arcana Albright, Albright College Glorious Bastard? Law, Order and Ethics in Maupassant’s Pierre et Jean Maupassant’s Pierre et Jean is more than a psychological thriller, though it has almost exclusively been considered under this light.

Many of the existing practices are motivated by a Franco-centric lens, which ultimately defines transgressive art cinema as a new phenomenon. The thesis argues that a study of extreme art cinema needs to consider filmic production both within and beyond France. It also argues that it requires an historical analysis, and I contest the notion that extreme art cinema is a recent mode of Film production. The study considers extreme art cinema as inhabiting a space between ‘high’ and ‘low’ art forms, noting the slippage between the two often polarised industries. The study has a focus on the paratext, with an analysis of DVD extras including ‘making ofs’ and documentary featurettes, interviews with directors, and cover sleeves. This will be used to examine audience engagement with the artefacts, and the films’ position within the film market. Through a detailed assessment of the visual symbols used throughout the films’ narrative images, the thesis observes the manner in which they engage with the taste structures and pictorial templates of art and exploitation cinema.

Le Disciple a-t-il jamais été fini ? Ses thèmes se perpétuent dans toute l ’œuvre narrative de Bourget. Le rapport professeur/élève peut en particulier être appréhendé dans l ’écriture diariste et dans les romans. L ’abbé Taconet dans Mensonges, Joseph Monneron et Victor Ferrand dans L ’Étape, modèlent de nouveaux esprits et de jeunes âmes. Le mauvais maître du Disciple, Adrien Sixte, préfigure en creux, par son matérialisme, l’importance de l ’éducation catholique, dont Bourget fut un ardent défenseur, après sa conversion, le 27 juillet 1901. Dès sa parution, en 1889, Le Disciple provoqua une querelle entre Anatole France et Ferdinand Brunetière, sur les rôles de la science et de la morale dans la forma- tion des jeunes générations (Bourget, 2010, p. 31-36). Ce roman, dédié « à un jeune homme », présente les risques d ’une imitation irréfléchie d ’un maître scientiste et amo- ral par un disciple inconséquent. Il n ’est cependant pas le premier succès de Bourget, qui avait déjà publié plusieurs romans psychologiques et mondains, dont Mensonges en 1887. Tracey Emin1 With these words Tracey Emin deprived the art world of her estimation of her nearest contemporary and perhaps the most notorious artist associated with the young British art phenomenon. Frustrating her interviewer’s attempt to discuss Damien Hirst is of course entirely Emin’s prerogative; why should she be under any obligation to discuss the work of a rival artist in interview? Given the theme of this book, however, no such discursive dispensation can be entertained. Why Damien Hirst? What exactly is problematic about Hirst’s art? It is time to talk about Damien. An early installation When Logics Die (1991) provides a useful starting point for identifying the features of the Hirstean aesthetic. High-definition, post- mortem forensic photographs of a suicide victim, a road accident fatality and a head blown out by a point-blank shotgun discharge are mounted on aluminium above a clinical bench strewn with medical paraphernalia and biohazard material. Speaking to Gordon Burn in 1992, the artist explained that what intrigued him about these images was the incongruity they involve: an obscene content yet amenable to disinterested contemplation in the aesthetic mode as a ‘beautiful’ abstract form. ‘I think that’s what the interest is in. Not in actual corpses. I mean, they’re completely delicious, desirable images of completely undesirable, unacceptable things. They’re like cookery books.’2 Now remember what he’s talking about here. Sustained, speculative and clinically detached, Hirst’s preoccupation with the stigmata of decomposition, disease and mortal suffering may be considered to violate instinctive taboos forbidding pleasurable engagement with the spectacle of death.

    Issue Six Dec. 2017 Angel City Review Foreword There comes a moment for all of us when we come to understand that truth is not immutable pillar of reality that we were raised to believe in. A teenager begins to understand that not only are there people who do not believe in God but that there are even people who don’t believe in any god. A red-blooded American patriot watches a video of refugees and political prisoners displaced by an autocratic government supported by the United States. A literature student takes a class and learns names like Derrida and Foucault and that maybe words themselves are something of a fiat currency. Learning that things are relative, that context is an, if not the, ultimate arbiter, can be a transcendental experience for the mind and the soul. And yet with every choice, something is gained and something is lost. In our rush to explore the infinite possibilities of our newfound philosophical freedom, we have seen what happens to the people in our wake. Some have been left wounded and ignored in the excitement to declare all things constructs of the mind. Some have used this wave of relativism as a tool of exploitation, equivocating crimes against humanity and the world by declaring them as inevitable or simply a matter of perspective. This way of looking at the multiverses beyond and inside our minds is neither a unquestionable good nor an abject evil. Like any tool, it simply is. And as always, what matters is how we use it. For starters, we cannot forget context.

    Islam and Christian–Muslim Relations, Vol. 13, No. 1, 2002 An Ethnographic Re ection on Muslim–Christian Dialogue in the North of France: the context of laõ¨cite´1 MALCOLM D. BROWN ABSTRACT This article argues that la¨õ cite´ is one of the most important issues facing Muslims in France, and French society as a whole. It contains an analysis of the historical meaning of la¨õ cite´, its relationship with secularization and secularity and the effect it has had on Muslims in contemporary France. Although la¨õ cite´ and some of its interpretations have been causes of tense relations between Muslims in France and the rest of French society, the alliances and divisions which have emerged have not always been along confessional lines. As well as Muslims having a diversity of attitudes towards la¨õ cite´, members of other religions are faced with similar challenges. Openness and dialogue between Muslims and Christians in France appear to have increased in recent years, perhaps beyond other countries in Europe, and this article hypothesizes that this is due to the common challenge of la¨õ cite´. More precisely, dialogue in France is practical, formal and bilateral, in contrast to the United Kingdom, for example, where it is theoretical, informal and multilateral. These hypotheses are supported by establish- ing the social signi cance of Muslim–Christian dialogue, and by citing published experiences and analyses of Muslim–Christian dialogue, qualitative research which I undertook in the Lille area and comparative ethnography (the point of comparison being the United Kingdom, the ethnography concentrated in Glasgow).

Le Tour de la France par deux enfants, a textbook written in 1877 by Augustine Fouillée, is our entry point to illustrate the strategies used in manufacturing French identity. We also analyze other texts: political speeches from the revolutionary era and from the Third Republic, as well as testimonies from both students and teachers written during the twentieth century. Bringing together close readings and research from various fields – history, linguistics, sociology, and philosophy – we use an interdisciplinary approach to shed light on language and national identity formation. Our findings underscore the connections between French primary education and national identity. Our analysis also contends that national identity in France during the Third Republic was an artificial construction and demonstrates how otherness was put in the service of populism.

    Is laïcité the civil religion of France? Blandine Chelini-Pont Presented at Brigham Young Univerity, March 2009 We would like to describe the ―civil religion‖ of France in the same manner that Robert Bellah examined the phenomenon in his article ―Civil Religion in America‖ (published in Daedalus, 1967, re-published in 2005.) First, let us define our conception of ―civil religion.‖ Civil Religion would be a combination of collective rituals that reveal a devotion to the unity of a nation and a national mythology made up of a diffusion of beliefs and representations that constitute the dominant mental attitudes of a society. It has its own unique history, its own mythical or providential origins and allows the population of a country to identify itself as such. It gives a national group the feeling of belonging, attachment and a common sense of pride.1 From this definition, Robert Bellah considers civil religion a real religion, which he calls a ―national faith.‖ The French intellectual Régis Debray believes that there is something more primitive and invincible, a state of very elaborate feelings of belonging, above that of civil religion. He claims that it exists in all human communities, large or small, and he calls it ―the sacred‖ [le sacré]. The sacred ―allows a group of individuals to live as a whole.‖ Debray defines this sacred as the indispensable ―imaginary coagulant‖ in every social order. Calvary Or Catastrophe? French Catholicism's First World War Abstract CALVARY OR CATASTROPHE? FRENCH CATHOLICISM’S FIRST WORLD WAR Arabella L. Hobbs Professor Gerald Prince The battlefield crucifixes that lined the Western Front powerfully connected industrialized warfare with the Christian past. This elision of the bloody corporeality of the crucifixion with the bodily suffering wrought by industrial warfare forged a connection between religious belief and modern reality that lies at the heart of my dissertation. Through the poignancy of Christ’s suffering, French Catholics found an explanatory tool for the devastation of the Great War, affirming that the blood of ther F ench dead would soon blossom in rich harvest. This dissertation argues that the story of French Catholicism and the Great War uncovers a complex and often dissonant understanding of the conflict that has become obscured in the uniform narrative of disillusionment and vain sacrifice ot emerge in the last century. Considering the thought to emerge from the French renouveau catholique from 1910 up to 1920, I argue that far from symbolizing the modernist era of nihilism, the war in fact created meaning in a world that had lost touch with its God.
