ALBUMLOU REIDOF & THE CAROLINAMONTH 20TH ANNIVERSARY CONCERT LIVE AT THE DOWN HOME

Lou Reid & Carolina have a new album out that celebrates the group’s 20th anniversary. The album was recorded live at the Down Home Studios in Johnson City, Tennessee. The album was recorded on December 1, 2012, and features 13 songs and an introduction by Tim White. Lou Reid & Carolina have been making great Bluegrass music since they formed in 1992 in Olin, North Carolina. This particular album captures the magic of this group. Some standout tracks are “Grass Lover,” “Time” and “When It Rains.” “Time” is a wonderful mid-tempo that will make you reminisce about days past. “When It Rains” is that last track on the album. This up-tempo song features some great musicianship, particularly the banjo and fiddle parts. This group can flat-out pick! The harmony is also wonderful on this barn burner. If you have never heard this traditional Bluegrass group you should check them out. This album would be a great place to start.

PRISCILLA OUELLETTE | NEARER

Priscilla Ouellette released an album last year that tackles the challenging feat of giving old Hymns a new feel. To hear these classic Hymns with modern production is really a treat. The album was produced by Jeff Nelson and it was recorded in Nashville, Tennessee. Ouellette has a great voice that really shines on this project. Some of the standout songs are the title track “Nearer,” “Stand By Me” and “Softly And Tenderly Jesus Is Calling.” The title track is a mid-tempo song with an ethereal feel that brings the powerful lyric to life. The final track on the album, “Softly And Tenderly Jesus Is Calling,” is a piano-driven Ballad that is a fitting end to this album. It’s nice to hear such a creative take on Hymns that have been around for a long time. These songs will touch a whole new generation of people, simply because of the modern production. Congrats to Priscilla Ouellette for record- ing an album based on a great idea.

PASTOR JOE | A SERVANT’S SONG

Pastor Joe has a new album titled A Servant’s Song, which consists of seven songs, all of which were written by Joseph Greenfield – Pastor Joe himself. Tate Music Group released the album. The album was recorded at DSL Studio in Louisville, Kentucky, with the exception of the song, “Faith-Hope-Love,” which was recorded at Tate Music Studios. The album opens with the title track “A Servant’s Song.” This self-reflective song is about serving God the Father. “That’s When You Shine” is another song worth noting on this album. This Ballad is about the calming presence of God, even in the most troubling times. Pastor Joe’s honest delivery of these songs helps sell their message. He doesn’t have the strongest vocal, but his conviction makes up for his lack of range. This is a good collection of songs from Pastor Joe.

CHRIS WEIS BAND | BRAND NEW START

Inspirational-Country artist Chris Weis, has a new album title Brand New Start, which has 8 songs. Weis either wrote or co-wrote 6 of the 8 songs. The album opens with the title track “Brand New Start,” which is a haunting mid-tempo about new beginnings. The second song on the album, “I Need Your Love” is a Ballad about needing the love of someone and/or God. The harmonies in the chorus really make this song standout. “Different Kind Of Crown,” which is one of the two songs Weis did not write, but is definitely worth mentioning. This song leans more Country than the others, in that it is an honest, self-reflecting song about being thirsty for a different kind of crown. The play on Crown Royal and God’s crown is clever and Weis pulls it off well. While this album may or may not top the charts in the Country or Christian charts, Weis knows who he is as an artist, which is extremely important. Weis is also a solid songwriter.
