Monocotyledons and Gymnosperms of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands

Monocots and Gymnosperms of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. Contributions from the United States National Herbarium, volume 52: 415 pages (including 65 figures). The present treatment constitutes an updated revision for the monocotyledon and gymnosperm flora (excluding Orchidaceae and Poaceae) for the biogeographical region of Puerto Rico (including all islets and islands) and the Virgin Islands. With this contribution, we fill the last major gap in the flora of this region, since the dicotyledons have been previously revised. This volume recognizes 33 families, 118 genera, and 349 species of Monocots (excluding the Orchidaceae and Poaceae) and three families, three genera, and six species of gymnosperms. The Poaceae with an estimated 89 genera and 265 species, will be published in a separate volume at a later date. When Ackerman’s (1995) treatment of orchids (65 genera and 145 species) and the Poaceae are added to our account of monocots, the new total rises to 35 families, 272 genera and 759 species. The differences in number from Britton’s and Wilson’s (1926) treatment is attributed to changes in families, generic and species concepts, recent introductions, naturalization of introduced species and cultivars, exclusion of cultivated plants, misdeterminations, and discoveries of new taxa or new distributional records during the last seven decades. -

International Centre for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT), Cali, Colombia Centre de coopération internationale en recherche agronomique pour le développement (CIRAD), UMR, Qualisud, Montpellier, Francia ABSTRACT Yam Dioscorea trifida, is an economical and cultural important crop for indigenous from Amazon region of South America. These crops could be a potential supply of starch that would be good source for different food industries. Nonetheless, is very little known about their composition and its starch type. Consequently, in this study were characterized the physical attributes and proximate composition of the tubers, and were also isolated, purified and characterized the starches of three varieties of Dioscorea trifida, cultured at the Amazons of Venezuela by the indigenous community “Piaroa”. Results reveal noticeable differences in the morphology, whole external appearance of the three tubers, and also in the color, forms and sizes. The protein, ash, starch and fat contents were higher in the white variety than those of purple and black ones, but the total carbohydrates showed inverse tendency. The dietary fiber content was obviously higher in the black variety, than the other two. Despite in literature there are not report for waxy Dioscorea trifida, the data of amylose content reveal that these starches are waxy. Its starches are white with quite low amylose content, with some mineral content, especially phosphorous, with similar rheological behaviors; exhibiting a quite stable viscosity during the holding stage, high breakdown, similar consistency and low setback upon cooling down. -

ABSTRACT Climate change is predicted to have far-reaching deleterious impacts worldwide; agriculture in particular is expected to be effected by significant loss of suitable land and crop yields in the world’s most populous and poorest regions. Crop wild relatives (CWR) are a rich source of underutilised genetic diversity which could help to mitigate climate change for agriculture through breeding new resilient varieties. However, CWR are under-conserved and threatened in the wild. This thesis researches and develops systematic methodologies to advance knowledge and support action on in situ CWR conservation at the global level. Methods included developing a global inventory of CWR associated with crops important for food security worldwide, species distribution modelling, climate change analysis, in situ gap analysis, reserve planning and prioritisation, and, examining the congruence of CWR distributions with regions of high biodiversity and crop diversity. -

Some ethnobotanical aspects of the Cuban dioscoreas are analyzed. The interviews were conducted to determine the uses of these plants in different regions of the country. The most frequent uses of species of the genus Dioscorea in Cuba are dietary supplement, against gastric affections (gastritis) and in Yoruba religious rituals. Values of use of the useful species of the genus were determined. Some ecological aspect as well as the distribution of the species were analysed. KEY WORDS. Dioscorea, Dioscoreaceae, ethnobotanic, ecology. Los ñames nativos están observaciones de campo. Se confeccionó una tabla con los representados por cerca de 20 especies de dos géneros: datos de distribución de las especies presentes en el Rajania y Dioscorea.
