  • Sweet Bird of Youth
Sweet Bird of Youth Relentless caper for all those who step The legend of their youth into the noon —Hart Crane The American poet Hart Crane was Tennessee Williams’s spiritual and literary mentor. Williams traveled with a picture of Crane and a volume of his poetry. Central to Crane’s work was the notion of a “usable past,” the idea of using one’s own personal history as metaphor and material for art. Williams began his play Sweet Bird of Youth with the above quote from Crane, which suggests that Williams may have been drawing heavily on his own personal history when writing the play. The inability to change one’s past is a central theme of Sweet Bird of Youth. In the play, Chance Wayne, having caused Heavenly, the love of his life, to contract a venereal disease, becomes the companion of an aging actress, Alexandra del Lago (called Princess), hoping that she can help him establish an acting career. Chance returns to his hometown, St. Cloud, to attempt a reconciliation with Heavenly, but in the end he is unable to recapture the love that they shared. He is abandoned by Princess when her career takes a better turn, and in the end he submits to castration in retribution for his corruption of Heavenly. The items in this exhibition are selections from the Fred W. Todd Tennessee Williams Collection, which is now housed at the Williams Research Center. The Todd Collection is currently being processed; sections of the collection will be made available to the public as they are completed.

SEASON THREE PRESS KIT CONTENTS SYNOPSIS 3 CAST & CHARACTERS 4 PRODUCTION BIOGRAPHIES 31 2 S Y N O PS I S As “Fear the Walking Dead” returns for season three, our families will be brought together in the vibrant and violent ecotone of the US-Mexico border. International lines done away with following the world’s end, our characters must attempt to rebuild not only society, but family as well. Madison has reconnected with Travis but Alicia has been fractured by her murder of Andres. Mere miles from his mother, Nick’s first action as a leader saw Luciana ambushed by an American militia group – the couple escaped death but Nick no longer feels immortal. Recovering both emotionally and physically, Strand has his sights set on harnessing the new world’s currency, and Ofelia’s captivity will test her ability to survive and see if she can muster the savagery of her father. 3 CAST + CHARACTERS 4 4 MADISON CLARK (Kim Dickens) “The devil you know…” In season three, Madison moves beyond mercy. She promises herself never to repeat the mistakes of the past. If that means she must embrace brutality, so be it. As Madison evolves over the course of this season, we will see her turn even darker. Her ends are pure, but her means are morally compromised. She will sacrifice compassion – and she will risk those she holds most dear. In pursuit of Nick, Madison leads Travis and Alicia through the aftermath of the battle that ended season two – a fight that could have taken Nick and Luciana’s lives.

When a group of American soldiers throw an Iraqi boy off a bridge in Samarra, the incident sets off a chain of events that exposes the deep rifts among the Iraqis in Samarra and results in yet another cycle of violence between the insurgents and the corrupt Iraqi police. Anna (Connie Nielsen) is an American journalist who decides to write a story about the assassination of an Iraqi leader whom she admires. At the same time, she is pulling away from a relationship with Dan (Damian Lewis), an American intelligence official who thinks the war can be won with hearts and minds, and towards Zaid (Mido Hamada), a young Iraqi photographer who shows her there are people, rather than sides, in the conflict.

ONGOING PROFESSIONAL TRAINING AND PRACTICE FOR ACTORS, PLAYWRIGHTS, AND DIRECTORS Celebrating 75 Years In 2020 HB Studio celebrates 75 years as a crucial training and practice space for theater artists. Herbert Berghof, a rising star of the German-Austrian theater who became a refugee from the Nazi Anschluss, founded HB in his new American home in 1945. In 1946 he joined forces with the magnificent actress Uta Hagen, who would become his life’s partner. Together they established the vital teaching legacy that now survives them, training some of the finest, most lauded actors of the American stage and screen. Having had to restart his artistic life in a new country and a new language, Berghof extended his compassion to other artists from “outside” in the form of an open door. HB is a place of opportunity, access, and community where anyone with serious intent is welcomed. “The instructors are the best in the Berghof was seeking the continuity and experimental business.
