Cumann na mBunscol News G&WFile

Mary O Callaghan An interview with one of the rising stars of Limerick Camogie G&W: What are your earliest GAA memories? Mary: I remember being at a Limerick match in the when I was very young - maybe four or five. I just remember the atmosphere was electric. When I started playing camogie, my Dad was our first coach at under 5’s and under 6’s. He was also coach to the Bruff Junior team. When I was eleven or twelve, I used to go to all the matches and I was allowed to fill in if they were short of players. I have a very early memory of playing in Lisnagry National Mary O Callaghan in School too. I don’t even know what the competition was but we won! It was action v Kilkenny brilliant. I couldn’t have been happier! G&W: Did you play on teams with the boys? Mary: Ah yeah. I did a few times when I was at school . G&W: What players did you admire when you were young? Mary: Growing up in Bruff, I admired Declan Reale and Mike Reale. G&W: Is there one particular skill you practise? Mary: My dream would be to put a sideline cut over the bar. Girls get two points for that! G&W: Is there anything different that the Limerick camogie team are doing this year? Mary: We have Declan Nash and he’s really excellent. We had him for ten weeks at the start of the year and he has stayed on. He does strength and conditioning. At the start of the year, we did one strength and conditioning session per week with Declan, one session of hurling, one on our own and a match at the weekend. Now we do two sessions per week with Declan, two of skills on our own and a match at the weekend. G&W: Any player to watch for the future? Mary: Hollie McKeogh from my own club, Bruff. G&W: Advice for young players? Mary: Listen to your coaches. Over the years, I’ve had lots of coaches and they all brought something different to my game. Try to get as much help as you can. Cúl Camps are great because you meet different coaches.

Mary is studying Medicine in UL. G&W: How do you manage to find time for study and your sporting commitments? Mary: It’s just a question of learning to manage your time. If you know you have to go training in the evening, you have to fit your study in early in the day. G&W: Are you into social media at all… Twitter, Snapchat, etc? Mary: I follow them all. Twitter is the best if you follow the GAA. I follow the Green and White on Twitter! G&W: Are you interested in music? Mary: I play a bit of trad music. I play the button accordion. I started in Comhaltas with Sheila Cagney. G&W: What is the last CD you bought or downloaded? Mary: Beyonce’s new album. G&W: What‘s your favourite programme on TV? Mary: I watch Scrubs... and Gray’s Anatomy. G&W: Any pets? Mary: A cat called Lizzie. Mary O Callaghane Limerick Camogi 5 The Green & White Summer 2016 Mini Sevens Going Strong! However, West Limerick had other ideas. Or, to be precise, Muirne Lane had other ideas. Now they have added the blue riband of Cumann na mBunscol hurling, the Mackey Cup, to the list of successes. And they did it the hard way, defeating West Limerick in the semi-final before overcoming a fancied Limerick City in the final. South Limerick had an impressive team on the sideline also with Limerick hurling stars Stephen Walsh, Nickie Quaid and joining Liam Quirke and Seán Kearney in the backroom team. 13 The Green & White Summer 2016 Bob McConkey By Cara McConkey. 5th Class Milford NS

Bob McConkey was my great granduncle. He won three All Ireland hurling medals with Limerick, in 1918, 1921* and 1934. He was captain in 1921 and he was the first man ever to lift the Liam McCarthy cup. He scored four goals in an All Ireland semi final in 1922 when Limerick beat Galway 6-00 to 2-02 at the Markets Field.** He played his club hurling with the Young Irelands in Limerick City. He was the trainer Cara Mc Conkey, of the first Limerick Harty Cup winning team, Limerick C.B.S. in 1920. Milford N.S. I play Gaelic football with my school and would like to play ladies football for Limerick one day. Editor’s note: Bob McConkey was ‘Uncle Bob’ to Brendan McNamara, former Principal of St. Munchin’s CBS (Hassett’s Cross) and his sister, June Hannan formerly of GNS & Kilfinny NS (Principal). The late Jack Leahy (former Principal of Knockea NS) and his son Donat Leahy, Principal of Scoil an Spioraid Naoimh, Roxborough, are also members of the McConkey Clan.) *The 1921 final was played in 1923. **Nowadays, Limerick FC (soccer) play their home games at The Markets Field.

Pat O Shea, Bridge St. Post Office (1957) beside his window display featuring the Olo Cup as its centerpiece 1957 Olo Cup Brian O Seaghdha supplied us with two wonderful images for this issue of The G&W. Regarding the photograph of the chalk drawing, he explained: “It was taken around 1957 in Gerald Griffin Memorial School (Creagh Lane School) under the iron staircase by my father. The picture was drawn by one of the pupils on a blackboard.” In the drawing, the lads in the pony trap are departing St. Mary’s CBS (Creagh Lane) for the Gaelic Grounds to support their schoolmates in the Olo Cup final. In the caption below the team photograph in the newspaper cutting, you will see St. Mary’s won that final on June 21, 1957. The Olo Cup also features in the photograph of Brian’s father, Pat O Shea, standing outside his premises, Bridge Street Post Office. Brian added, “Every year he would mark different occasions with a window display ... this photo of him was taken around the same time (1957) but I’m not sure when, if you can identify the cups then the year would be clear.” As the Olo Cup is the centrepiece of the window display and St. Mary’s were winners of the Olo Cup three times -1937, 1951 and 1957- we are confident that the photograph was taken in 1957. We are very grateful to Brian O Seaghdha for sharing his photos with us. In terms of social history and local GAA history, they are pure gold. And, of course, if there are any more photographs like these out there we would love to share them with readers of The G&W!

St Patrick’s Day, 2016. Jedward twins, John and Edward were getting ready to parade through the main streets of Limerick in a vintage Rolls Royce driven by Mike Prenderville. Meanwhile, the hurlers of Na Piarsaigh GAA Club were in Croke Park and on their way to becoming Limerick’s first ever All Ireland club hurling champions. Among the huge contingent in GAA headquarters cheering on the boys from was John Grimes, Jedward’s dad. Aidan Ryan, a regular contributor to The G&W, met up with John (senior) in Croke Park. No surprise there, as Aidan explained: “Their Dad John has been a supervising steward in Croke Park for years. I went to school with John and am godfather to Edward (of Jedward). John grew up in Mayorstone Park and was Jedward at the youngest of eight - the only boy with 7 older sisters “ 2016 Limerick City & County Council Aidan added that the Grimes’ connection with Na St. Patrick’s Day Piarsaigh GAA club goes back a long way. “Their Parade. grandad, Jim was involved in the street leagues in Photo by Don the 1970s and he was a regular steward in the Moloney-Press 22 Gaelic Grounds. “John (senior) and I hurled for Na Piarsaigh when it was a junior club. Reaching the Under 21 All Ireland final last year was great. The crowd were down around the pitch. We were well ahead with ten minutes to go so you could really enjoy the feeling. That’s very unusual to be able to enjoy yourself in the last ten minutes of an All EAST+++EAST+++EAST+++EAST+++EAST+++EAST++++EAST+++ Ireland final. G&W: Any disappointments? Tom: I suppose losing the All Ireland minor final in 2014 and losing the semi final in 2013 when there was the famous ‘Hawkeye’ point. KNOCKAINEY SPORTSFIELD by Carole Cleary Knockainey GAA club was re-organised at a meeting on February 19th, 1936. Johnny Guerin (Chairman of the South Board) was elected club Chairman. Others elected to office were: Vice-Chairman, Thomas Creighton; Secretary, Tomas de Róiste; Assistant Secretary, Maurice Moloney; Treasurer, Thomas Cooke; Assistant Treasurer, Nicholas Cooke. In May 1938, following the division of the Bourchier estate, Knockainey GAA Club submitted an application to the Land Commission for two GAA fields, one in Knockainey and the other in Elton. Knockainey GAA club was granted roughly 6 acres in Knockainey; the field in Elton - now a soccer pitch - was acquired at the same time. Tommy Cooke (Limerick Hurler and All Ireland winner in 1940) was a trustee of the Knockainey pitch for decades. P.J. O’Sullivan took over the field in Elton and he got matches held there down through the years. When he died there was no one to take it over so the Knocklong Soccer Club came back and took it over. Knockainey left it to them. In relation to the pitch in Knockainey, Tommy Cooke said, “The Land Commission, when they handed it over, emphasised that it was a sportsfield” - that meant that soccer, rugby and Gaelic football could be played there. Nowadays, the field is run as a co-op and it is known as Knockainey Sportsfield. I have included a few photos to illustrate this article. Look at them and I’m sure you will agree with me when I say Knockainey Sportsfield is one of the best pitches in the country!

Henry Martin (who, in G&W Issue 59, sent out an appeal for information about Limerick GAA grounds) adds: I can never remember Elton field being used for GAA purposes but it was used by the South Division for games back through the years and Staker Wallace also played there at one point.

2015 All Ireland U-21 Hurling Campaign 1987, 2000-2002... and 2015 - Limerick’s glory years at Under 21 level

What an unexpected joy this campaign was! Yes, we semi-final. knew we had a decent team coming through at this grade, Onwards to Ennis in the dying days of July for a final but was it a year, or two, too soon to hope for silverware? against the locals. Clare, although not as strong as in recent The 2013 and 2014 Minor teams had given us great years, still had a team that contained many household excitement but ultimately Hawk-Eye in 2013 and Kilkenny names including that of the tousle-haired warrior, Shane in 2014 put a stop to our gallop towards a first Irish Press O’Donnell. Limerick were well ahead in the first half but Cup win since 1984. These were bitter disappointments went two points behind early in the second half and looked for all concerned, consequently - with so many of the in big trouble. We rallied and with the help of 13 points same players involved - it was with some trepidation we from our Man of the Match, - and some approached the 2015 U-21 championship. excellent defending when required - we escaped from Ennis The journey began on a wet mid-July evening in with a famous victory (and denied Clare four-in-a-row!) Limerick against the Minor champions of 2012, Tipperary. The locals were gutted. The craic on the pitch after the It was a topsy-turvy game with goals, points and thrills presentation was mighty. I even got myself into the galore. At one stage in the first half, Limerick were three television shots as our captain Diarmaid Byrnes goals ahead. We were pegged back, however, had a man received the cup! sent off and looked down and out before we rallied to The €3 Munster Final programme contains, among eke out a sensational win in the dying minutes. This was its 32 pages, a nice article about the 1986 Munster U-21 achieved on the back of two sensational saves from a man Hurling Final replay, (Limerick’s first win at this grade), who was making his debut for Limerick - in any grade - with colour photos of both teams as well as a picture of David McCarthy, and a crucial goal from Tom Morrissey the cover of the 1986 programme (a rare collector’s item, when the tide had turned completely against us. Truly this nowadays). There are many connections between the 1986 was a win against the head and one that set us off on our and 2015 teams too: Hegarty, O’Riordan, Finn and Carey/ odyssey in good stead Lynch, to mention just a few. The €3 Munster Semi-Final programme is a 32 page Next up was a trip to Tipp for the All-Ireland production. There is a Twitter tag (#munstergaa15) on the semi-final against Galway. Many of effort for a Munster underage this Galway players were on the crest of a wave because they had just qualified for the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Final against Kilkenny. Once again Limerick got into an early lead only to be pegged back. The scores were level at half time. Galway got ahead at the start of the second half, a carbon copy of the Clare game, only for Limerick to go point for point with them until the game-breaking goal came at the start of the final quarter. The will of the Tribesmen was finally broken and Limerick ran out worthy 6-point winners. The 16-page All-Ireland Semi-Final programme, a DBA production, cost €3. It was exactly half the size of the two previous Munster Council productions, but the same price. Too expensive! senior All-Ireland Finals. It was Wexford’s 13th final at this grade since their one-and-only success back in 1965. 2015 All Ireland U-21 Green and White fans will recall that we beat them by a point in 2001 in Thurles, the second win of our famous three-in-a-row. Limerick were uncharacteristically nervy for much of Hurling Campaign the first half of the Under 21 final and the concession of a goal on 50 minutes allowed Wexford a modicum of hope, though their hurling was far inferior to Limerick’s. A response of 9 points without reply firmly put paid to those slim hopes. When the whistle for full time was blown, Limerick were 0-26 to 1-7 ahead. Brilliant! I couldn’t fully enjoy the game as I had a few pence on Limerick to win by more than the handicap of four points and, with the concession of that goal, things were a bit too close for comfort for a little while! I had my fun on the pitch afterwards though! The Thurles stewards were fantastic to allow us celebrate there for at least 45 minutes after the final whistle - a relatively rare occurrence, but a wonderful one! The €3, 32-page All-Ireland Final programme is printed on ever-so-slightly thicker paper than the Munster Council programmes sold earlier in the campaign. It is a fine programme, worthy of the occasion, and just about makes up for the relatively expensive semi-final programme. G&W
