Wizkid Returns with Two New Songs to Celebrate Nigerian Independence Day – WIZKID RETURNS WITH TWO NEW SONGS TO CELEBRATE NIGERIAN INDEPENDENCE DAY – “MASTER GROOVE” AND “FEVER” TAKES OVER SPOTIFY’S AFRICAN HEAT PLAYLIST Photo credit: Gideon Ayeni [New York, NY - October 1, 2018] Today, in celebration of Nigerian Independence Day, international superstar Wizkid releases two new tracks – “Master Groove” and “Fever.” In addition, the Nigerian singer/songwriter teams up with Spotify to takeover their “African Heat” playlist under their brand new Afro Hub, showcasing the importance and influence of African music throughout the world. As a primer for his upcoming fourth album Made in Lagos, Wizkid will embark on an exclusive 4-city show run in the US starting October 5th at The Strand Theatre in Providence, RI. Additional stops include The Skyway Theatre in Minneapolis, MN (10/6), Echostage in Washington, DC (10/7) and Ayva Centre in Houston, TX (10/12). Since the release of his 2017 international LP Sounds From The Other Side (Starboy/RCA Records/Sony Music International), Wizkid has been making his mark in the field of fashion. In June, Wizkid walked alongside supermodel Naomi Campbell in Dolce & Gabanna’s Spring/Summer 2019 show for Milan Fashion Week, making him the first African artist to do so. Earlier this year, Wizkid launched his official Starboy merchandise line centered around the “Made In Lagos” theme. Wizkid has also become an official Nike brand ambassador for the debut of their new Nigeria Super Eagles line. He designed the Starboy jersey with Nike that sold out within minutes of its release, followed by an exclusive Nike-hosted pop-up shop at Niketown London, which led to another sell out. A third release of the StarBoy jersey is set for today in honor of Nigerian Independence Day. His first record, “Lil Prinz,” was recorded in 2001 in collaboration with a Glorious Five, a group consisting of Wizkid and his friends from church. In 2006, he started pursuing music full-time, at first collaborating with various Nigerian pop acts including OJB Jezreel, Naeto C, and Banky W. By 2011, he was ready to record his debut studio album as a solo artist: Superstar was released via Empire Mates Entertainment to great critical and public acclaim across Africa, propelling him to stardom in his home country. Wizkid released his sophomore album, Ayo, in 2014. His second studio album featured a multitude of guest appearances, including a spot from Femi Kuti. It also featured Wizkid's global breakthrough track "Ojuelegba," declared as the 12th best song in 2015 by The Fader. Not only did the single cement his status as one of Nigeria's biggest pop acts, it was also picked up and remixed by Drake and Skepta, thrusting Wizkid into the international spotlight. In return, Wizkid appeared on Drake's 2016 smash single "One Dance." In March 2017, it was announced that Wizkid had signed a major deal with RCA and Sony International, which released his third LP, Sounds From the Other Side, later that year. A handful of singles appeared in advance of the album, including "Sweet Love" and the Drake-assisted "Come Closer" while the album boasted features by Chris Brown, Major Lazer, Ty Dolla $ign, Trey Songz and Bucie, along with production by Sarz, Diplo, Picard Brothers, Spellz, DJ Mustard and more. Additionally, Wizkid has won three MTV Africa Music Awards - Artist of the Year, Best Male and Best Collaboration, a BET Award for Best International Act: Africa, and a MOBO Award for Best African Act. Following his international campaign, Wizkid focused attention on his StarBoy imprint and grooming its affiliate acts. Pushing collaborations such as “Manya” and “Soco,” Wizkid continues to dominate the present day African airwaves. At 27 years old, Wizkid became the first Afrobeats artist to sell out London's Royal Albert Hall and o2 Arena, proving his movement to be one of lasting global impact. The African superstar also trends in the fashion scene with pop up shops for his merchandise and star- studded fashion show appearances with Naomi Campbell. As an official Nike brand ambassador, his “Starboy” jersey line sold out in just 7 minutes after its global release. While the Wizkid seeks more interaction with fans and supporters, he remains focused on the music. His fourth studio project, Made in Lagos, is set for release in late 2018. • We're Taking Africa to the World
“We’re Taking Africa to the World”: Commercial Self- fashioning as a Vehicle for Collective Aspirations in the 21st Century JAANA SERRES “It’s finally cool to be an ‘African’” (Kaumbutho). This 2017 blog post by Kenyan poet Kimathi Kaumbutho echoed the performative claims heard throughout the African middle class in the wake of the changing narrative about “Africa,” from “The hopeless continent” (The Economist 2000) to “Africa rising” (The Economist 2011). Elements and signs of “Africanness” have indeed been increasingly featured in “global” popular culture, from clothing lines to films, and even the practice of capitalism is rebranded with “African traditional principles” through the Africapitalist and Ubuntu “economic philosophies.” But as suggested by Kaumbutho’s list of achievements “Africans can take pride in,” one cultural medium has proven particularly instrumental to this new wave of positive identification with “Africa”: Nigerian music. As Nigeria was arguably entering a post-oil era in the 2010s (Burns and Owen), its renewed popular music industry benefitted from the development of digital technology and the expression of corporate interest by telecom companies, retail brands, and foreign-educated young professionals, making it an exemplary manifestation of a new pan-Africanism founded on neoliberal aspirations (Shipley Living the Hiplife). Global professional services firm PwC announced that total revenue for Nigeria’s entertainment and media industry was expected to grow to US$8.1 billion in 2019, calling it the “fastest-expanding major market globally” (Oxford Business Group). However, only a very small share of this revenue occurs from the actual sale of cultural products (PwC 22).

DAVIDO Nearing the close of 2019, it’s hard for many to say they haven’t heard the name Davido, born David Adedeji Adeleke. The year marks another fete of huge achievements, from opening the year with a sold out date at London’s O2 Arena – making him the first solo African artist to do this – to creating mass hysteria across America with his 2018 single “Fall” which has gone on to have the longest run of an Afrobeats single on the Billboard charts, and saw it peak across Shazam as one of the most searched songs in the United States, and now gears up to release his second album A Good Time, all before a circuit of Christmas shows across Africa. If anything has framed where Davido currently is, it would his “childhood.” The youngest of five, growing up with his parents in Lagos, Nigeria, he was “exposed” to the world. Across summer breaks he would travel to visit his siblings in London and Atlanta, the latter being home to some of the artists that he today he can call his good friends – YoungThug, Gunna, Lil Baby – and the home to some of his favorite rappers growing up – Ludacris, Nelly – the sounds of noughties Hip Hop that he “loved.” It was most likely these trips that would drive a love for music that reflected global ambition. This exposure to the world, would in turn give Davido the opportunity to share with his University of Alabama friends music from Nigeria, that he knew if “given a chance” would go global.

  • Questions and Answers: the Coronavirus Global Response
European Commission - Questions and answers Questions and answers: the Coronavirus Global response Brussels, 28 May 2020 The Coronavirus Global Response builds on the commitment made by G20 leaders on 26 March to present a united front against the pandemic. With this in mind, on 24 April, the World Health Organization (WHO) and an initial group of health actors launched a global collaboration for the accelerated development, production and equitable global Access to COVID-19 Tools – the ACT Accelerator. Together, they issued a call to action. The European Commission responded to this call by joining forces with global partners to host a pledging event – the Coronavirus Global Response Initiative – as of 4 May 2020. The pledging event was co-convened by the European Union, Canada, France, Germany, Italy (also incoming G20 presidency), Japan, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (also holding the G20 presidency), Norway, Spain and the United Kingdom. More than 40 countries, United Nations bodies and philanthropies made a pledge towards the research and development of coronavirus solutions at this global event – with €7.4 billion equivalent to $8 billion – raised that day. The European Commission committed €1 billion in grants and €400 million in guarantees on loans through reprioritisation of Horizon 2020 (€1 billion), RescEU (€80 million), the Emergency Support Instrument (€150 million). Raising €7.4 billion was an extraordinary achievement but it will not be enough to ensure the distribution of coronavirus health technologies worldwide, as this involves significant costs in terms of production, procurement and distribution. This is why, on 4 May, President von der Leyen invited people to continue joining the Coronavirus Global Response, “in a global mobilisation of hope and resolve.” More information is available on the website: europa.eu/global-response.

  • Africa's Soft Power : Philosophies, Political Values, Foreign Policies and Cultural Exports / Oluwaseun Tella
“This seven-chapter book is a powerful testimonial to consummate African scholarship. Its analysis is rigorous, insightful, lucid and authoritative, providing fresh perspectives on selected uniquely African philosophies, and the potential ities, deployment and limitations of soft power in Africa’s international relations. The author rigorously Africanises the concept, broadening its analytic scope from its biased Western methodology, thus brilliantly fulfilling that great African pro verb made famous by the inimitable Chinua Achebe: ‘that until the lions have their own historians, the history of the hunt will always glorify the hunter’. This is truly an intellectual tour de force.” W. Alade Fawole, Professor of International Relations, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria. “This book addresses an important tool in the arsenal of foreign policy from an African perspective. African states have significant soft power capacities, although soft power is not always appreciated as a lever of influence, or fully integrated into countries’ foreign policy strategies. Tella takes Nye’s original concept and Africanises it, discussing Egypt, Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa via their respective philosophies of Pharaonism, Harambee, Omolúwàbí and Ubuntu. This study is a critical contribution to the literature on African foreign policies and how to use soft power to greater effect in building African agency on the global stage.” Elizabeth Sidiropoulos, Chief Executive, South African Institute of International Affairs, Johannesburg, South Africa. “Soft power is seldom associated with African states, given decades bedevilled by coup d’états, brazen dictatorships and misrule. This ground-breaking book is certainly a tour de force in conceptualising soft power in the African context.
