A faunal survey of the elateroidea of Montana by Catherine Elaine Seibert A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Entomology Montana State University © Copyright by Catherine Elaine Seibert (1993) Abstract: The beetle family Elateridae is a large and taxonomically difficult group of insects that includes many economically important species of cultivated crops. Elaterid larvae, or wireworms, have a history of damaging small grains in Montana. Although chemical seed treatments have controlled wireworm damage since the early 1950's, it is- highly probable that their availability will become limited, if not completely unavailable, in the near future. In that event, information about Montana's elaterid fauna, particularity which species are present and where, will be necessary for renewed research efforts directed at wireworm management. A faunal survey of the superfamily Elateroidea, including the Elateridae and three closely related families, was undertaken to determine the species composition and distribution in Montana. Because elateroid larvae are difficult to collect and identify, the survey concentrated exclusively on adult beetles. This effort involved both the collection of Montana elateroids from the field and extensive borrowing of the same from museum sources. Results from the survey identified one artematopid, 152 elaterid, six throscid, and seven eucnemid species from Montana. County distributions for each species were mapped. In addition, dichotomous keys, and taxonomic and biological information, were compiled for various taxa. Species of potential economic importance were also noted, along with their host plants. Although the knowledge of the superfamily' has been improved significantly, it is not complete. -

Key words – False click-beetles, saproxylic, Palaearctic, hypermetamorphosis, fifth instar, prepupal larval forms INTRODUCTION Farsus Jacquelin du Val, 1863 is a small, primarily Old World group, consisting of 12 described species, eight of which are distributed in the tropics and the remaining four are in the Palaearctic Region. Farsus brevis Fleutiaux, 1931, Farsus exoticus Bonvouloir, 1875 and Farsus salvazai Fleutiaux, 1918 are distributed in the Indo-Malayan ecozone. Farsus costipennis Fleutiaux, 1926 have been taken in Madagascar. Farsus ainu Fleutiaux, 1922 is distributed in Japan. Farsus obenbergeri Roubal, 1941 have been taken in Sichuan, China. Farsus obesus Iablokoff-Khnzorian, 1964 is regarded as a precinctive species in Georgia. The type species, F. dubius (Piller and Mitterpacher, 1783) have been recorded in many countries across western and central Europe. Muona (1991) noted two undescribed species are present in S.E. Asia. Muona (2000) also noted the clade consisting of four species (Farsus elavatus Bonvouloir, 1875, Farsus oblitus Horn, 1890, Farsus obscurus Bonvouloir, 1875 and Farsus wagneri Fleutiaux, 1934) from Central and South America are misplaced. -

Simple Summary: A new false click-beetle (Eucnemidae) belonging to subfamily Anischiinae, for- merly not known as fossils, extends the age of this small extant group 125 million years back. The structural specializations of the false click-beetle larvae are discussed. On the basis of this new piece of paleontological evidence, it is shown that these insects have changed their host prefer- ence from gymnosperms to angiosperms at least twice. It also indicates that the beetle larvae can switch their favored development substrate by adapting in different ways, either with or without morphological specialization. Nine of the genera are new to the country: Rhagomicrus Fleutiaux, 1902, Adelorhagus Horn, 1890, Adelothyreus Chevrolat, 1867, Microrhagus Dejean, 1833, Dyscharachthis Blackburn, 1900, Heterotaxis Bonvouloir, 1871, Spinifornax Fleutiaux, 1926, Serrifornax Fleutiaux, 1926 and Maelodrus Fleutiaux, 1928. The previous eucnemid record from Peru contained eleven species in ten genera. Only one of the forty species caught, Entomophthalmus americanus Bonvouloir, was previously known and described from the country. Dyscharachthis, Maelodrus and Adelorhagus are recorded from South America for the first time. Many of the collected species seem to favor white-sand forest as their habitat. Possible reasons for this are discussed. A list of eucnemids from Peru is included, containing taxa already recorded from the country and also taxa that are likely to occur there. A key to the Peruvian genera is included. -

www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Telomeric DNA sequences in beetle taxa vary with species richness Daniela Prušáková1,2, Vratislav Peska3, Stano Pekár4, Michal Bubeník3, Lukáš Čížek1,2, Aleš Bezděk1 & Radmila Čapková Frydrychová1,2* Telomeres are protective structures at the ends of eukaryotic chromosomes, and disruption of their nucleoprotein composition usually results in genome instability and cell death. Telomeric DNA sequences have generally been found to be exceptionally conserved in evolution, and the most common pattern of telomeric sequences across eukaryotes is (TxAyGz)n maintained by telomerase. However, telomerase-added DNA repeats in some insect taxa frequently vary, show unusual features, and can even be absent. It has been speculated about factors that might allow frequent changes in telomere composition in Insecta. Coleoptera (beetles) is the largest of all insect orders and based on previously available data, it seemed that the telomeric sequence of beetles varies to a great extent. We performed an extensive mapping of the (TTAGG)n sequence, the ancestral telomeric sequence in Insects, across the main branches of Coleoptera. Our study indicates that the (TTAGG)n sequence has been repeatedly or completely lost in more than half of the tested beetle superfamilies. Although the exact telomeric motif in most of the (TTAGG)n-negative beetles is unknown, we found that the (TTAGG)n sequence has been replaced by two alternative telomeric motifs, the (TCAGG)n and (TTA GGG )n, in at least three superfamilies of Coleoptera. The diversity of the telomeric motifs was positively related to the species richness of taxa, regardless of the age of the taxa. -
