Temple Square Performances for March 2019 ____________________________________________________________________________________ February 21, 2019 Contact: Judy Alba 801-240-3323 919-612-2136 Temple Square Performances for March 2019 A variety of concerts and performances on Temple Square will take place during the month of March. Unless otherwise noted below, concerts are free and no tickets are required. All are open to the public. Friday, March 8 – BYU Winterfest: Noteworthy With nine talented women, BYU Noteworthy presents a cappella music with perfect harmony, fun stage presence, and a unique musical arrangement from pop to spiritual. This performance will take place at 7:00 p.m. in the Conference Center Theater. Tickets are $12 and can be obtained online at www.LDS.org/Events or by calling 801-570-0080. Friday, March 15 – UMTA Concerto Honors Recital Each year the Utah Music Teachers Association (UMTA) holds a concerto competition for the youth in Utah and the winners have been invited to perform in this Honors Recital. The program features performances by first-place winners of the competition, including music students from elementary school through college. This performance will be at 7:30 p.m. in the Assembly Hall. Saturday, March 16 – The Uinta Trio The Uinta Trio—Michael McQuay, Monte Belknap, and Nicole Pinnell—will perform works by Dvorak and Schubert during this inaugural concert season. Michael is professor of piano at Brigham Young University–Idaho, Monte is professor of violin at Brigham Young University, and Nicole is a Salt Lake City- based billboard charting recording artist. The performance will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the Assembly Hall. Friday, March 22 – University of Utah, “Light Eternal” The University of Utah School of Music Choral Area presents, "Light Eternal." Conducted by Dr. Barlow Bradford, a 320-voiced choral union comprised of the University of Utah Chamber and A Cappella Choirs, in addition to singers from Pine View, Juab, Maple Mountain, Springville, American Heritage, Westlake, Alta and Syracuse high schools will perform Morten Lauridsen's, "Lux Aeterna," a sacred choral work accompanied by symphony orchestra. This performance will take place from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. in the Tabernacle. Saturday, March 23 – “Anthem: A Night of Music and Devotion” Anthem is an interactive concert that features local artists singing faith-based music and presenting a message of hope, love, and divine worth. This evening is presented by 90&9, a nonprofit that promotes healthy living through the arts, and will be hosted by an L.A. recording artist and circus performer. The event will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the Conference Center Theater. Free tickets are required and can be obtained online at www.LDS.org/Events or by calling 801-570-0080. Friday and Saturday, March 29, 30 – The Orchestra at Temple Square and Temple Square Chorale 2019 Spring Concert Entitled "An Evening of Britten and Bernstein," the concert will feature "The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra" and "Te Deum in C," both by Benjamin Britten, followed by "Chichester Psalms" by Leonard Bernstein. The evening’s performances will be under the baton of Ryan Murphy, associate music director of The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square and conductor of the Temple Square Chorale. This event will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Tabernacle both nights. The concert is free, but tickets are required. Tickets can be obtained online at www.LDS.org/Events or by calling 801-570-0080. Doors open at 8:30 a.m. and those attending are asked to be in their seats by 9:15 a.m. Doors close at 9:27 a.m. for the 9:30 a.m., 30-minute broadcast. Choir mem- bers hone musicianship skills such as rhythm, sight-reading, and the understanding of complex scores. They develop an understanding of the intricacies of vocal production, includ- ing pitch, and how to blend individual voices together into a unifi ed, beautiful sound. In recent years, the A Cappella Choir has become a standard of excellence in student singing in the State of Utah. Last fall, they sang Mozart’s Trinity Mass with the Utah Symphony and the Utah Symphony Chorus under the direction of Thierry Fischer. This renewed a tradition of collaboration between the choirs of the University of Utah and the Utah Symphony, and their outstanding performance resulted in invitations for return engagements in 2015. Utah Chamber Artists was established in 1991 by Barlow University of Utah Chamber Choir Bradford and James Lee Sorenson. The ensemble comprises forty singers and forty players who create a balance and so- nority rarely found in a combined choir and orchestra.

    For Immediate Release Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square Present Handel’s Messiah at Easter Concert The triumphant and angelic sounds of George Frideric Handel’s masterpiece Messiah will resound in the Tabernacle on Temple Square this Easter. For the first time in 10 years the full Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square will present the Easter concert, and perhaps for the first time ever the Choir will publicly perform Messiah in its entirety. The concerts will coincide with Good Friday on Friday, April 18, and Saturday, April 19, 2014, at 7:30 p.m. in the Tabernacle with Mack Wilberg, music director of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, conducting the event. These performances are also in anticipation of a recording of the entire oratorio to be made by the Choir and Orchestra during 2014. This leads us to the central question of this dissertation, what changes took place in the latter part of the twentieth century to secularize the repertoire of the primary choir for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS)? In the 1860s, when the MTC began, its sole purpose was to perform for various church meetings, in particular for General Conference of the LDS church which was held in the Tabernacle at Temple Square in Salt Lake City. From the beginning of the twentieth century and escalating during the late 1950s to the early 1960s, the Choir’s role changed from an in-house choir for the LDS church to a choir that also fulfilled a cultural and entertainment function, not only for the LDS church but also for the American public at large.

    For Immediate Release Utah Premiere of Wilberg Oratorio Headlines Orchestra at Temple Square and Temple Square Chorale Spring Concert SALT LAKE CITY — The Orchestra at Temple Square and Temple Square Choral will join their musical talents for this year’s Spring Concert on Friday and Saturday, April 29-30, 2016. The evening’s performances will be under the baton of Ryan Murphy, associate music director of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and conductor of the Temple Square Chorale. Beginning at 7:30 p.m. in the Tabernacle, the first half of the concert will feature the Orchestra performing an excerpt from the Suite from The Wise Virgins orchestrated by William Walton from music by J. S. Bach and From Death to Life by C. Hubert H. Parry. The concert’s second half will feature the Utah premiere of Mack Wilberg’s oratorio The Prodigal performed by the Temple Square Chorale accompanied by the Orchestra at Temple Square. Suite from The Wise Virgins is an orchestral suite extracted from the musical score of a ballet employing J. S. Bach cantata and chorale music. The score ballet was originally assembled in 1940; the orchestral suite has been recorded multiple times between then and 1976. From Death to Life is a symphonic poem in two movements written by C. Hubert H. Parry in 1914 as his personal reaction to the start of World War I. This concert will mark the Utah premiere of Wilberg’s oratorio The Prodigal. Commissioned by the University of South Mississippi Choral Activities, the work was first performed in Hattiesburg, Mississippi on February 12, 2015.

The program will include the much-celebrated Gloria by French composer Francis Poulenc. Noted soprano soloist Elizabeth Pike Murdock, a graduate of the Brigham Young University School of Music, will be featured in the performance. The evening’s concert will be led by Ryan Murphy, associate conductor of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and conductor of the Temple Square Chorale, who says, “The spring Chorale concert is unique because the musicians focus their talents on a major composition in its entirety. Gloria, in particular, reflects the deep religious beliefs of its composer, Francis Poulenc. The Chorale is an exceptionally talented ensemble and brings this masterpiece to life.” The second half of the concert will feature a variety of sacred anthems, including two new compositions by Ryan Murphy, as well as music by John Rutter and Edgar Bainton. Murphy says, “The voices of the Chorale will be beautifully accompanied by the Orchestra at Temple Square, and we are so grateful for its continued support.” The Chorale, in its 14th year, is the training ensemble for the Choir and this year has 120 singers — those completing the audition process for the Choir, those who joined the Choir last year, and a group of seasoned Choir members.

    MACK WILBERG: THE CREATIVE MIND BEHIND THE MUSIC Mack Wilberg, music director or the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, is recognized as a preeminent composer, arranger, conductor, and choral clinician throughout the world. Whether it's refreshing a traditional hymn or folk tune through his arrangements, adding new life to a patriotic favorite, a lilting Christmas carol, or a revisiting classic like Handel’s Messiah in his 2013 edition, Wilberg’s music touches the soul. Wilberg composes extensively; much of his work is commissioned. He also has a special ability to give renewed vitality to well-loved tunes through his arrangements. For example, his arrangement of “Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing,” an audience favorite, is in the top three most watched videos on the Mormon Tabernacle Choir’s You Tube channel with more than 5 million views. No wonder that the Mormon Tabernacle Choir is one of the few groups that is as likely to be in your grandmother’s record collection as on your nephew’s iPod. Mack earned his bachelor’s degree in music from including Brigham Young University, and his masters and PhD in music from the Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California. But music was in Mack’s blood long before he received any formal training.

She suffered severe leg and head injuries and was initially in critical condition at the hospital.
