In last year=s dramatic renewal of the Travers, the Kiaran McLaughlin-trained Alpha (Bernardini) and Ken McPeek-trained Golden Ticket (Speightstown) dead- heated for the victory. Both trainers are back this year. McLaughlin will saddle Godolphin=s Transparent (Bernardini). The $725,000 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga yearling finished first in the July 26 Curlin S. over the Saratoga oval, but was disqualified and placed fifth. Godolphin, which owns Alpha, will also be represented in the race by the Tom Albertrani-trained Romansh (Bernardini), who inherited the Curlin win. A $750,000 Saratoga yearling, the dark bay colt broke his maiden in his third start in an off-the-turfer at Belmont May 25 and makes just his fifth start in the Travers. AThe horse has been improving with every start,@ Albertrani said. AHe has raced only four times, and I have seen a big improvement after every start. I love the way he has been going into this race. He is definitely more focused. I am getting all the right signs. Hopefully, he is just good enough to handle the rest of the field.@ McPeek will saddle Magdalena Racing and Diamond M Stable=s War Dancer (War Front). The dark bay colt has made 60 Broad St. only one start on the main track, but McPeek thinks his Suite 100 win in the 1 1/4-mile GII Virginia Derby July 13 will be Red Bank, NJ 07701 pivotal.
