This week’s visit was the gover- nor’s tenth. His first was as an 18-year-old student, he says, in July 1973, just a few months prior to the outbreak of the Yom Kippur War. “I don’t know what my parents were thinking at the time,” Mr. Huckabee says, “but I spent the summer there with a friend from school and it was one of my most wonder- ful experiences.” Frankly, I was both intrigued and amazed by some of Huckabee’s state- ments, and I asked him whether or not he would have been able to maintain these positions through the general election and in office—primarily on the issue of Israeli withdrawal from territory from which everyone involved (the Israelis more than most) seems to agree they should withdraw from. “I see the idea of Israel giving up land as Israel surrendering secu- rity, and a sovereign country just does not do that today,” he said. On the subject of last week’s proposal that Israel award 93 percent of Judea and Samaria to a new Palestinian state, Governor Huckabee said he was amazed at the proposal but also pleased that the deal was turned down by the PA presi- dent, Mahmoud Abbas. Shifting to the subject of the Israeli idea that Abbas pres- ents Israel with what might be a final opportunity for peace with a Palestinian leader for some time to come, Mr. Huckabee added that he 6 August 22, 2008 5 TOWNS JEWISH TIMES

Neustadt answered, “One for Shabbos and one for weekdays.” The customs officer was perplexed: “But that is only two, why four?” Unflustered, Rabbi Neustadt responded, “Well, one set for me, and one for my wife.” Today, there are three shochtim for the entire coun- try of Georgia and two of them are sh’lichim for the Vaad LeHatzolas Nidchei Yisroel. The third shochet also works closely with the Vaad. The Vaad provides him with funds and trans- portation so that he can provide kosher meat for other communities through- out Georgia. “There are now four kosher stores in Tbilisi,” continued Rabbi Levin. “They provide meat not only for Tbilisi, but kosher consumers from across Georgia receive meat orders from these stores.” A Vaad sh’liach continued, “Our efforts are not limited to Tbilisi and Gori. In Azerbaijan, for example, there is a small city called Kuba [not to be con- fused with the Cuba south of the United States], which is mostly Jewish, with many tea houses. Tea houses in Azerbaijan are similar to beer houses in Germany. People sit there and talk from morning to evening drinking tea. We asked, ‘Why can’t our sh’lichim sit there and discuss Torah?’ We did this very successfully.” What is Jewish life like in Georgia? What about kosher food? Vaad sh’lichim receive a container shipment of food products each year before Pesach. “The container has an enor- mous amount of food, both for Pesach and throughout the year. We receive shemurah matzah, wine and grape juice, and chametz food, too. We sell the chametz food and buy it back after Pesach,” explained Rabbi Levin. What about other kosher eating habits? Is there, for example, kosher pizza available in Tbilisi? Rabbi Levin responded, “There is no kosher pizza, but in Georgia there is something very similar available. It is called chatcha- puri. It tastes very similar to pizza, but it is shaped somewhat like a boureka, although it tastes nothing like it. But, if introducing pizza will help our kiruv efforts, it may be a good idea.” O

Where there is chillul Hashem, we do not impart honor to a rabbi; I therefore come forward with an accusation… I accuse many rabbis who grant hechsherim, who knowingly or other- wise, or out of neglect, permit non- kosher meat to be processed and sold under their stamp of approval both wholesale and retail; the seller is an unscrupulous person with a Torah sanction… I accuse many rabbis who although they themselves have no part in the hechsherim, nevertheless, know about them and still remain silent. There is a sort of mutual reciprocal agreement to keep quiet and sanction each other including their false hechsherim. Perhaps it’s because they wish to avoid chillul Hashem. It’s a simple I would like to follow up on my pre- vious letter (August 8) and respond to the letters from this past week (August 15). In the first letter the writer (Lea Weiss) makes a number of valid points. She points out that we cannot live behind brick walls and that it’s a part of this galus to be in contact with soci- ety, and embraces an “if you can’t beat them, join them” mentality—that it’s quite impossible to shield yourself or your children’s neshamos from the depraved American culture, and aside from being inevitable is even a part of our community. In the second letter, the writer (Mark Rubin) made it suffi- ciently clear that speaking to girls and having a girlfriend are quite all right and surely not anywhere near the issurim involved with alcohol or drug abuse. In addition, the writer infers from my letter that, from my point of view, all of Modern Orthodoxy, YU, OU, and Young Israel are “at risk.” Then again, that’s not quite right. History, especially Jewish history, has a proven trend of repeating itself. The first letter is sufficient proof that many of us are indeed living in a bubble, and even after the Holocaust still remain unaware of this fact. In explicit contrast to the statement that Jews have always been one with their gentile neighbors and have been part of their culture for millennia, I would like to point out that for thou- sands of years Jews did in fact live in a “box.” A more modern term would be a ghetto. Furthermore, since the time of the destruction of the Second Beis HaMikdash, Jews’ rights have been heavily restricted, if they existed at all. Not to mention the constant pogroms and crusades during which hundreds and thousands of innocent Jewish vic- tims were mercilessly murdered. And because of this, Jews, for the bulk of this galus, had minimal contact with the outside culture and were (by default) capable of blocking out for- eign influences. Only in the 1800s, when Napoleon tore down the ghetto walls, did Jews begin to develop any sort of connec- tion to the outside world. In fact, R’ Shneur Zalman of Liadi actually encouraged the Jews of Russia to fight 26 August 22, 2008 5 TOWNS JEWISH TIMES against Napoleon, and explained his position in a let- ter stating: “…should Napoleon be victorious, wealth among the Jews will be abundant…but the hearts of Israel will be separated and distant from their Father in Heaven. But if our master [Czar] Alexander will triumph, though poverty will be abun- dant…the heart of Israel will be bound and joined with their Father in Heaven…” How true were his words, for as the years progressed and Jews began integrating themselves into “real society” new movements and philoso- phies developed. The Haskalah, or Enlightenment, ultimately led to the Reform, whose purpose was to inte- grate completely while retain- ing only a microscopic aspect of Jewish tradition. It wasn’t long before the Ribbono shel Olam sent us a stark reminder that we are His children and will forever remain so. Similar to today, there were tremen- dous amounts of Torah being learned and unbelievable chesed, yet at the same time much assimilation. Returning from a visit to America, R’ Elchonon Wasserman, zt’l, commented about Jewish peo- ple living there that “they know how to make Kiddush, but haven’t a clue how to make Havdalah”—i.e., we know how to elevate by doing chesed, etc., but fail miserably in separating ourselves from the American culture. In regard to the writer’s rationale for exposing chil- dren to “salty language,” I surely don’t need to point out much. I am unsure where the term of “salty language” as a synonym for the poison of nivel peh comes from, but would humbly suggest that we all pick up a Sefer Chofetz Chaim and see what the Chofetz Chaim has to say about this “salty language,” regardless if it is spoken or only heard. If a parent would ever give up in his or her efforts to protect not only their child but themselves from being slowly poisoned to death, they would surely be referred for help; the devastat- ing and poisonous effect of “salty language” on a neshamah is no different. The writer’s claim that a parent’s hashkafah and the hashkafah of their son’s yeshiva cannot create hypocrisy falls awfully short of accuracy. Simply put: if a parent sends their child to a yeshiva that has a particular hashkafah and not only per- mits but encourages certain activities expressly forbid- den by halachah and

The New Singles Scene At The Jackson Dear Editor, I enjoyed reading your articles about the “singles” scene at the former Grossingers and Concord Hotels. As the world goes, it’s an era “gone by.” For that matter, so is the Pioneer, Pine View, and others. There is an alternative that the frum community has once again become reacquainted with, and that is the “New Jackson Hotel” in Long Beach, N.Y. It is less than an hour from Midtown Manhattan and 45 minutes or less from Queens or Brooklyn. Since I became manager over a year and a half ago, many changes have been made. Renovations have made the Jackson by the Beach a bou- tique hotel. Our catering for bar mitz- vahs, sheva berachos, and parties has made it once again the “in place” for these simchas. We hosted several shabbatonim for schools and organiza- tions and have become a relaxed place for singles to meet. I invite you to become a part of our new success by sponsoring some sin- gles events and becoming a part of their simchas by helping to arrange sin- gles shabbatonim at the new Jackson by the Beach Hotel, a place that sin- gles can mix and meet—without hav- ing to drive to the mountains. Moshe Robbins, Manager, The New Jackson by the Beach Hotel

And you shall place these words of Mine in your heart and in your soul; and bind them for a sign upon your hand, and they will be as tefillin between your eyes. And you shall teach them your children… (Devarim 11:18-19) Just as it is incumbent upon every Jew to put on tefillin every day, so is there an unequivocal duty which rests upon every individual, from the greatest scholar to the most simple of folk, to set aside a half-hour each day in which to think about the education of his children.

5 TOWNS JEWISH TIMES August 22, 2008 29 30 August 22, 2008 5 TOWNS JEWISH TIMES INSIGHTS ON THE TORAH Continued from Page 25 the present moment. The pomegranate is hypocrisy in its noblest form: the refusal to reconcile oneself to one’s spiritual and moral sta- tion as defined by the present state of one’s character; the insistence on act- ing better and more G-dly than we are.

Struggle For most of us, life is synonymous with struggle. We struggle to forge an identity under the heavy shadow of parental and peer influence; we strug- gle to find a partner in life, and then we struggle to preserve our marriage; we struggle to raise our children, and then struggle in our relationship with them as adults; we struggle to earn a living, and then struggle with our guilt over our good fortune; and underlying it all is the perpetual struggle between our animal and G-dly selves, between our self-oriented instincts and our aspiration to transcend the self and touch the Divine. The olive in us is that part of our- selves that thrives on struggle, that rev- els in it, that would no more escape it than escape life itself. Just like an olive, say our Sages, which yields its oil only when pressed, so, too, do we yield what is best in us only when pressed between the millstones of life and the counterforces of a divided self.

Perfection As the fig is countered by the pome- granate, so, too, is the olive in us con- trasted by our seventh fruit, the date, which represents our capacity for peace, tranquility, and perfection. While it is true that we’re best when we’re pressed, it is equally true that there are potentials in our soul that well forth only when we are complete- ly at peace with ourselves—only when we have achieved a balance and har- mony among the diverse components of our souls. Thus the Psalmist sings: “The tzaddik (perfectly righteous person) shall bloom as the date palm” (Tehillim 92:13). The Zohar explains that there is a certain species of date palm that bears fruit only after 70 years. The human character comprises 7 basic attributes, each consisting of 10 subcategories; thus, the tzaddik’s blooming after 70 years is the fruit of absolute tranquility— the product of a soul whose every aspect and nuance of character has been refined and brought into har- mony with oneself, one’s fellow, and one’s G-d. While the olive and date describe two very different spiritual person- alities, they both exist within every man. For even in the midst of our most ardent struggles, we can always find comfort and fortitude in the tranquil perfection that resides at the core of our souls. And even in our most tranquil moments, we can always find the challenge that will provoke us to yet greater achievement. O

At the right time, all will be revealed; but for now, we must try to put our faith in Hashem, and rest assured in the knowledge that everything He does is for our ultimate benefit. Our parashah imparts this idea to us. “As a father chastises his son, so does Hashem chastise you” (Devarim 8:5). A caring parent must at times act toward his child in a way that the child doesn’t enjoy. Nor, at the time, does the child fully appreciate or understand why he is being treated in such a manner. Videoconferencing allows people in different locations to see and talk to each other. In a city of the former Soviet Union, a Jewish family sat around the table and held their breaths. Newly exposed to Yiddishkeit, the Seder was the focal point of this recently discovered festival. And the moment for which the boy waited all evening had finally arrived. He had stolen the afiko- man and demanded its ransom. Never in their wildest imagina- tions could the boy’s family fathom what their son would request. Unlike other boys his age, he was not interested in a book or game; not even a shiny new bike. His demand: to be able to attend Jewish classes. What was it that brought this child, new to appreciate his Jewish identity, to thirst for more? What is the cause of the metamorphosis taking place in hundreds of Jewish homes throughout the FSU? The answer: the boy attended the Istochnik classes—a unique, revolutionizing approach to out- reach, never been seen before. O

Only a few months into this pro- gram, Istochnik’s classes have been directly responsible for some impor- tant developments. In addition to the afikoman ransom, boys have gone to yeshiva, and many b’risos milah for adults and teens have taken place. Most of the students participate in the Kabbolas Shabbas and Shabbos seudah. Priority-1 Hosts Inaugural Legislative Breakfast On Wednesday, August 13, Priority-1 hosted its inaugural legislative breakfast at the Lawrence Country Club. This event educated legislators about youth who are “at risk” of dropping out of high school and ultimately becoming alien- ated from their families and their com- munities, and helped raise support and awareness about the challenges facing “at risk” youth through effective public policy and legislation. In addition, com- munal, civic, and religious leaders, community philanthropists, and elected officials attended in order to pay tribute to elected officials who recognize the invaluable role that Priority-1 has played in ensuring the social rehabilita- tion and eventual success of numerous young people within the wider Jewish community. The breakfast, which was coordinat- ed by the Friedlander Group, paid trib- ute to numerous individuals who have helped to ensure the continued suc- cess of Priority-1. William E. Rapfogel, CEO of the Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty, served as the master of ceremonies at the event. Priority-1 founder Rabbi Shaya Cohen opened the event by addressing and welcoming all the attendants. Elected officials were presented with awards to acknowledge their ded- ication to the ideals of Priority-1. Michael Tobman, principal at Hudson TG, presented the State Leadership Award to New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli. New York State Senate Majority Leader Dean G. E. F. Schumacher said, “Any intelli- gent fool can make things bigger, more complex, and more violent. It takes a touch of genius—and a lot of courage— to move in the opposite direction.” Moshe Rabbeinu took this approach much earlier, as we see in the first verse of Parashas Eikev (Devarim 7:12), which says, “And it will be because you will heed these ordinances and keep them and perform that the L-rd, your G-d, will keep for you the covenant and the kind- ness that He swore to your forefathers.” In this verse, Moshe encapsulates all of Jewish history and provides perspec- tive and understanding in how we can hasten the Mashiach and triumph in all our military battles. Moshe urges us to be enthused with the new but remem- ber the old. Victory is possible if our actions permit G-d to remember the everlasting covenant with Avraham. We must realize that Yaakov’s essence was symbolic of grasping, yearning, fighting, deceit, and warfare. Yaakov fought his whole life to remain standing. He fought in the womb, in the dark of the night, and upfront with his kin. If we grasp the sacrifice and valor exhibited by the avos and continue the tradition of fighting against the evil incli- nation, bad thoughts, and our unworthy enemies, Mashiach will arrive. We couldn’t be deemed “Yisrael” if not for Yaakov, but we won’t receive G-d’s kindness if we fail to guard the commandments. All battles that con- front us will be easily won so long as G-d is the general. He wants to be our general, but we must live up to our bargain. This is the reality that Moshe is conveying to B’nei Yisrael in a direct, upfront, and succinct message. It takes a lot of courage to present such basic and simple words to a nation that is used to turning away. Moshe, however, takes the risk. He adds another book to the Torah in order to give B’nei Yisrael a perfect review. Moshe took no chances. He deliv- ered reality. He spoke to us as our leader who always sacrificed for us and served as our sole advocate throughout our travels in the desert. His sincerity couldn’t be questioned. He was our messenger who only want- ed us to succeed. He wanted us to enter the land easily, with no resist- ance. He was our father and always looked out for our best interests. It would be foolish not to heed his words that have been delivered to us on a silver platter. Moshe is merely saying to be grateful for the sacrifice of the avos and, at a minimum, guard the commandments. It’s easy and it guarantees military victory—which we certainly now need. O

AROUND THE FIVE TOWNS Continued from Page 45 who loved the community.” Indeed, it was Steven’s wife, Genie, who convinced Michael and Sheryl Cooper to move to the Five Towns from Kew Gardens Hills 22 years ago. Upon hearing that the Coopers’ air conditioner in their previous home was in need of repair, Genie advised Sheryl not to have it fixed because there was a house for sale across the street from the Savitskys. The rest is history. Together with their beautiful children, Michael and Sheryl moved to Hewlett and became one of Congregation Anshei Chesed’s founding families. Formerly known as Congregation Toras Chaim, the shul became a focal point of Michael’s life. “From the very first, we both felt the friendship and warmth of this unique kehillah and its rav and rebbetzin,” Sheryl explains. “We immediately became immersed in the life of the shul and felt that we were part of the ‘South Shore family.’ Michael became a mainstay of the early minyan and in the early years joined the rav’s Shabbos afternoon Gemara shiur. The shul became a major part of Michael’s life and a source of much of his humor. Michael felt a tremendous achrayus to make sure that the shul always had a minyan. “Michael was irrepressible when he had a joke to tell. I would see that spe- cial twinkle in his eye and knew that nothing I could say or do would restrain him. He just felt that it was his obligation to share his simchas ha’chay- im with everyone around him. Very often, I would watch Michael in shul and marvel at how comfortable and at home he seemed there. He would have a smile and a joke for everyone and it seemed to me as if many men approached him regularly just to see him smile and hear his latest funny anecdote.” Steven Soep, who is president of Congregation Anshei Chesed, recalled Michael’s serene presence: “He was an amazing man who made everyone feel special. Michael was quiet and pleas- ant and his absence is very palpable. I look at his seat in shul and it’s still his. He possessed a quiet strength. Michael would walk into a room and make everyone feel truly special.” Michael and Sheryl grew up togeth- er in Kew Gardens Hills; they met at the Young Israel and were married on Lag B’Omer at the ages of 20 and 19, respectively. Michael graduated from CCNY in 1966 with a degree in electri- cal engineering. He spent 18 years as Vice President of Engineering and Product Development at the Knogo Corporation and more recently was Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of CGM Corporation. An extremely honest individual, Michael’s moral compass and his behavior were a kiddush Hashem in his business endeavors, where everyone knew that he was a Torah-observant Jew. “Michael was an extremely intelli- gent and insightful person, known for his sense of humor and his ‘seiver

ed. We had planned on having Dr. Rivka Blau join us at the beginning of the year, but unfortunately, due to personal circumstances, she won’t be able to, although we still hope to have her join us at some point. When she informed us of her decision, we immediately notified the Shalhevet parent body, and we were very grati- fied by the strong message of support that we received back from them. That’s one of the advantages of a small school environment; we can stay in close contact with our parents, and they feel free to reach out to us as well. So, when there are important developments, we make sure that they’re informed immediately, and that they hear facts, not rumors. On the other hand, the advantage of being part of a big program is that we have an abundance of administra- tive resources to fill any unexpected contingency that may arise. So, on the administrative side, we have Ms. Renee Hochhauser, a longtime educa- tor and assistant principal at HANC, who will serve as Shalhevet’s senior administrator. We have Mrs. Gail Elsant, our director of programming, who comes to us from SKA and Shevach. Andrea Schulman, our director of student activities, and Mrs. Chani Schwartz, our mechanechet, will provide the kind of youthful energy to the program that we so want. Of course, we also have Morah Mindy—Mrs. Mindy Suss- man—who will oversee Shalhevet’s office. So Shalhevet has a deep administrative team in addition to its team of outstanding educators. And who are the girls coming to Shalhevet? The girls are absolutely amazing. They’re bright, independent, and strong-willed—yet respectful, with wonderful midot. They come to us from a variety of different programs— Shulamith, Bnot Shulamith, HALB, HAFTR, HANC, North Shore, Prospect Park—and different commu- nities. They represent the kind of girls that we want, the kind who will go on to become models for others, indeed, for our entire community. They’re the true stars in this story; we’re just the coaches, helping them along the way to achieve their life goals. O
