U.K. INTERNATIONAL ATHLETES 1896-1981

One of the projects that we would most like to pursue is the collation of a dossier of U.K. International athletes.

No lists of international athletes or full results of international fixtures have been published since 'The Encyclopedia of British Athletics' by Ian Buchanan (1961 ) and 'British Women's Athletics (Part 2: International 1921-64)' by Peter Pozzoli (1965).

Exactly what we will be able to publish will depend on the economics. While we may at some stage be able to publish summarised results of all events at international matches, the main part will consist of an alphabetical index of UK international athletes with, space permitting, chronological listings of performances in matches and championships. We need to ascertain full Christian names and dates of birth (or death), many previously unpublished. We must also draw up a list of what constitutes an international appearance. Basically it is to follow the guidelines laid down in Ian Buchanan's book (though not necessarily Pozzoli's). All full G.B. and N.I. matches and appearances for G.B. and N.I. at , European Championships, European Indoor Championships, Lugano Cup races etc. qualify, but there are some borderline cases, and indeed the problem of some non-match events.

A possible full layout would look as follows:

PETERS, Mary Elizabeth 060739“ Ballymena AC/Spartan LAC/NI Total: 36 + 8i 1961 v Hun SP (4) 1230 v GFR SP (4) 1192 v Pol SP 4) 1164 1962 v GFR SP (3) 14O3i v Bel v Neth Pen (1) 4420 v Pol . SP (4 1270 EC SP (12) 1315 The total given in line 3 is the number of appearances in full U.K. international teams (outdoor) followed by the number of appearances in full U.K. international teams (indoor). Data would be given in the same form for appearances in 'B' international teams, etc. as a supplement.

It is not proposed to give additional data such as height and weight, but date of death would be given where known.

Appearances for , or would not count, as at the , for instance, but it would be a useful follow-up to separately compile international appearances for each constituent part of the U.K.

If you would like to help with this project, and we need volunteers, please contact Andrew Huxtable, 78 Toynbee Road, SW20 8SR.

AUTOMATIC TIMINGS AT A.A.A. CHAMPIONSHIPS

I was disappointed, that the Championship Results summary in the A.A.A. Centenary- History did not incorporate photo-finish times prior to 1975 (and curious that, as "A.A.A. Honorary Statistician", nobody consulted me!)

Photo-finish equipment was first installed at White City in 1958 and operated by the Race-Finish Recording Co. (later Racecourse Technical Services) until the move to Crystal Palace. R.T.S. in fact continued at C.P. until the AAA/BAAB took over operations in 1974*

All A.A.A. Senior Championships from 1960 onwards were covered by photo-finish (i have as yet no details of 1958 & 1959)» and most results from the early days are listed on the following sheets, together with actual times at 800m upwards from 1975» There are still some gaps in my records for the early 1960’s, which I hope someday will be completed. Note that at White City, the 100m, 120y/l00m Hurdles and Steeplechase finish were on the back-straight, so no films of these events existed. The 1968 5000m and 1971 10000m were held at Wolverhampton and respectively.

Some other comments:- Figuerolawinning 100y time in 1964 was Officially adjusted to 9.5 (compare other adjustments from originally announced times, such as Nash 21.1 in 1968, Carter 1:45.2 in 1975* Gamoudi 27:23.8 in 1966, etc.)

Ron Hill was A.A.A. Champion in 1972; Lutz Philipp was not .officially entered and ran as a guest (compare the in 1968, won by with 7985).

John McSorley’s 1962 Javelin mark of 260’0 converted to 79.25 under measurement rules of the day. Bob Sparks

JUNIOR/YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIPS

Photo-finish was first used at the 1974 Championships (Crystal Palace), but unfortunately the electrical connection in the gun (activating the timer) failed at the start of the first event (!) and consequently no auto-times were obtained, Photo-finish was next used at Cwmbran (1978), but at Cleckheaton an Accutrack camera gave only a handful of results. At Birmingham (1980), however, full coverage was again obtained.

IN BRIEF IV thanks to all those who have contributed to this issue ....

.... Forthcoming issues will include UK All-Time Lists for the Jumps and Throws. As the standard is generally lower on the field than on the track, the depth for performances and performers will not be so great ... anybody wishing to help the team of Peter Matthews, Ian Hodge, Tim Lynch-Staunton and Andrew Huxtable with the compilation of any of these lists, especially the Long and Triple Jumps, please contact Tim at his home address...... In Issue No.2 (Vol.19) a considerable amount of news concerning the activities of members was published, and now that ’’Who’s Who" would appear to have come to an end, the editor would again appreciate any news members may care to send. NATIONAL ATHLETICS RECORDS FOR ALL COUNTRIES IN THE WORLD No less than seven ATFS members are listed as authors of this the latest volume of National Athletics Records.

The dedication in producing this work of 144 pages covering all Olympic events for both men and women is evidenced when glancing through the first event. No less than 185 nations are listed for the men's 100 metres ranging from ' 9.95 to the 12.46 of Stu Limehouse (Guam).

Apart from ATFS members and athletics fans, this book has particular value when major championships come around, acting as a check on the validity of submitted performances - who can forget the three performers from Sierra Leone in the 800 - all supposedly 1.47.4 men.

This can therefore be regarded as a definitive work. Price:- $ 8 Europe, $ 10 Outside Europe Available from: Winfried Kramer, Im Fichtenwald 2, D-6680 Neunkirchen—Kohlhof, FRG— .

CARIBBEAN ANNUAL - 1979 Bernard Linley's Caribbean annual gets better each time. This, the fifth in_the series contains summaries of major 1979 meetings, a 1979 Yearlist, and 100 deep all-time performer lists, together with 100 deep all-time performances, a welcome addition.

Whilst results of Caribbean athletes in the USA are frequently to be seen, it's not so easy to catch sight of performances in or Central America — so Linley's book is an important and welcome addition to anyone's athletics library. Available from: Bernard Linley, Via Cassia 987, 00189-Roma, (j^ 8)

ENCYCLOPEDIA OF ATHLETICS Mel Watman's latest edition of the encyclopedia has been reviewed in A.W. but should not be ignored by any fan wishing to keep a quick reference guide to hand on UK and . As one might expect, it's excellently researched and by ignoring A.A.A, winners before the mid-1950s allows a lot of new data to be included. At £8.95 it's pricey, but on balance worth it.

Available from: A.W.'Book Dept., 544 High Street, Rochester, Kent.

Scott Davis points out that his address is 4452 Snowbird Circle, Cerritos, CA 90701, and not as shown in the last NUTS NOTES. Additionally he assures us that a minority of copies were poorly printed and that the 1982 Annual will be better yet. Richard Hymans

THE LONG DISTANCE RECORD BOOK Compiled by Andy Milroy. Road Runners' Club Publication available from Don Bonser, Sales Officer of the RRC, 80 Benhill Wood Road, Sutton, Surrey. £1.50 including postage.

Almost twenty years ago a member of the N.U.T.S., the late Dave Roberts, produced DISTANCE RECORDS, a valuable pioneering statistical booklet that in its lists of progressive best performances for distance runs from 10 miles to 24 hours encapsulated the history of the most blistering form of athletics. By 1976 the lists required substantial updating, and the task was undertaken for the Road Runners' Club, the publishers of the original booklet, by Andy Milroy, with DISTANCE RUNNING PROGRESSIVE BESTS, which was notable for the addition of noteworthy professional performances. A second edition was published in 1978. - 6 -

THE LONG DISTANCE RECORD BOOK is altogether more ambitious in scope. As an introduction Milroy surveys the history of ultra-long distance running in a 6000 word essay which is not only lucid and authoritative, but supported by information based on research into little-known, but important phases of the sport’s development. Nowhere have I seen so comprehensive an account of the part played by running messengers and footmen in establishing a tradition of covering great distances. The essay takes a worldwide view, showing, for instance, how the Anglo-American six-day races of the 1880s were supplanted by the marathon craze and the French Belle Epochs in the next two decades, which in turn were overtaken by the South African Comrades’ Marathon (1921) and the "Bunion Derbies" across America in the late twenties. Milroy finishes with the great jogging movement that has created an even more astonishing mass preoccupation with distance running than the excitement over Dorando’s Marathon in 1908.

The statistics match the introduction in comprehensiveness, at least as far back into history as reliable timing will allow. The progressive best performances for the linear events are traced back to the 1870s for amateurs and 1850s for professionals, with frequent listings of eighteenth century performances on roads and racecourses noted separately for comparison. The events range from 10 miles to the 62 miles achieved in the six-day races of a century ago. Similar lists for women’s events show the astonishing improvements made in the last decade at each test from one hour to twenty-four. Incidentally it was interesting to note that the best performance so far achieved in the six-day races staged in America in modern revivals of the nineteenth century "wobbles" ia 450 miles, by Park Barner in June 1981, a performance exceeded by a woman walker, Madame Anderson, with 452 miles in 1878. The fun of a book like this is making such comparisons, between amateurs and professionals, runners and walkers, road-runners and track runners, men and women. It is even possible to compare continent with continent in the section on Continental Progressive Bests for the Hour, 20Km and 30Km. Fell-running, Journey Runs from city to city, Trans- Continental Runs, all are documented, and an index of over 400 names (most with birth-dates) provides an easy reference to the 57 pages of text and statistics.

The eight pages of illustrations include two which seem particularly appropriate to the continuity of distance running. The first shows one of the sport’s most successful and individual characters, the late Arthur Newton, handing refreshments to a brilliant runner of a later era, Wally Hayward, in 1955* The second is of Edgar Lloyd, 50 miles record-breaker in 1915» urging Alan Phillips to a record at the same distance 55 years later.

Andy Milroy has performed a tremendous service to everyone interested in the progress and development of distance running. I understand that he has applied to join the N.U.T.S. I venture to say that no more persuasive application could be submitted than THE LONG DISTANCE RECORD BOOK. Peter Lovesey

Chataway v Kuts in October 1954 (seen while on leave from RAF) switched it all permanently on. Best performance witnessed; Ovett's 5s49«6 on 51.8.79; When younger I was a mediocre hurdler; best performance 27.6 220yh 1957; currently I am orienteering regularly, and made my marathon debut last Sunday (27.4.80), only to be beaten by Leslie Watson by nearly an hour!

TROWBRIDGE, Barry; b. 7*6.49 London; Mel's'boy'; s. (divorced); 1.72/70; Bee School, Tooting 1960-67, Kingston Polytechnic on day release 1967-70, L.I.M.A.; watching most sports, particularly rugby union and cricket, snooker, ornithology, walking - fells etc., real ale, my dogs - 2 Shetland Sheepdogs - as you can see the last 4 can all be combined, thus I love 'England' - it has so much to offer, especially the Lake District; in bad winter of 62-65 we were forced at school to do cross countries. My best pal and I were about equal at sports except at this - where he was much superior. I stuck at it and eventually captained the school at athletics and cross country for 2 years. Like most people with a passing interest it took a hairy individual wearing a black & white vest to stir the embers at the start of the seventies. I'm glad he did, he started the athletics revival in the UK and it is, in my opinion, his bandwagon that Bren, Pascoe, etc jumped on and made flourish. They are all people I admire greatly. I went to for my honeymoon (1) and was hooked after that. I attended 1972 & 1980 Olympics, 1973 European Cup & 1979 European Cup and although at these meets there were some superb performances, particularly Kozak, nothing sticks in my mind quite like Dave Bedford's world record in 1973. The atmos- phere (considering it was a Friday bight at CP) was electric, I was proud to be British. 's Golden Mile this year was pretty special - but he's my hero anyway so I'll only be accused of bias, and his 1978 2M Coke win over Rono was unbelievable. (You'd guess right if you thought I was something of a rebel. My sports 'heros' are those who seem to tipset authorities - Tommy Docherty, Dennis Law, Geoff Boycott, Mohammed Ali, Bob Hiller, JPR (?) Etc.); 1967 (?) - 100y - 11.0, 220 y - 25.7, mile (!)-I never lost a mile at my own school, but didn't have to break 5 minutes too often to win. I am now 'active' again and thoroughly enjoying my twice-a-week 5’s. New York watch out! - 9 - TURNBULL, Simon Noel; b. 9.12.61 Whickham; Freelance sports journalist (mainly athletics, football, rugby league, rugby union, basketball & snooker); m. to Lesley, 1 d (Hayley) 6 mths; 1.76/76; Whickham Comprehensive School; Snooker - have played , football - trialist with Middlesbrough F.C.,(avid supporter of Sunderland F.C. and Whickham F.C. - F.A. The problems inherent in one person preparing a world ranking were brought home by one reader last year who wondered incredulously why Reichenbach had been omitted (he should have been placed 3rd). Hopefully no aberrations have occurred this year.

100m 1. (USA) Carl Lewis bombed out in Rome but his US season was 2. Allan Wells (UK) so good that he has to be rated No.1. Wells’ wins 3. (USA) in the European and World Cups were enough to rate 4. (USA) him ahead of Mel Lattany. Lattany won the WUG title, 5. (USA) produced 10 sub 10.20 clockings (2 windy) but lost out 6. Ernest Obeng (GHA) due to poor runs in the TAC, NCAA and Golden races. 7. Frank Emmelmann (GDR) Sanford at his best was No.1 but ran indifferently at 8. Jeff Phillips (USA) the TAC and failed to appear in Europe in August. 9. Ron Brown (USA) Floyd was overshadowed by his countrymen but performed 10. Herman Panzo (FRA) solidly from May to August. Ernest Obeng was good at the AAA and superb at the World Cup. In perfect conditions he would have run 10.10. Emmelmann showed glimpses of greatness which should come to fruition next year. Big Jeff Phillips beat Carl Lewis in a 10.1 race (the blurred picture showed an estimated 10.28 to 10.32) and ran 10.00w in the NCAA, but was frequently burdened by muscle problems. Ron Brown was one of the best kept secrets of the year but missed 2nd in the TAC by 0.02, while Panzo was inspired in the Golden 100 but otherwise very inconsistent.

200m 1. Mel Lattany (.USA) Lattany was clearly 1st. He won the World Cup and 2. Allan Wells (UK) had 4 of the top 6 clockings. Wells was 2nd in Rome 3. Frank Emmelmann (GDR) and and had a 2-1 advantage over Lattany. 4. Dwayne Evans (USA) Emmelmann beat Wells in the European Cup but seemed 5. James Sanford (USA) overawed in Rome. The 22 year old veteran Dwayne 6. Jeff Phillips (USA) Evans won the NCAA and had 7 of the top 31 clockings. 7. Stanley Floyd (USA) One race does not a season make but Sanford’s one good 8. (JAM) race was the fastest of the year, while Phillips would 9. Eric Brown (USA) have been ranked higher but for his inconsistency. 10. Terron Wright (USA) Stanley Floyd showed that he wasn’t just a 100 man with a win over Wells and an impressive run in the AAA. Don Quarrie, who is expected to retire from sprinting before 1990, had his first individual run in the World Cup and was consistent in the USA. Eric Brown, like Floyd, moved smoothly into the 200 and had 3 sub-20.40 clockings. 10th was Terron Wright, 2nd in the NCAA, one of half a dozen who could have been accorded that position.

1. Cliff Wiley (USA) Wiley graduated with honours from the sprints winning 2. Bert Cameron (JAM) everything in sight culminating in a splendid win in 3. Tony Darden (USA) Rome. Cameron had the fastest time since 1978, and 4. Walter McCoy (USA) like Wiley gave the impression that 44-0 at sea level 5. (ITA) was in sight. Darden and McCoy had solid European 6. (GFR) tournees with the former ahead on the basis of his 2nd 7. (USA) at the TAC. Zuliani lost to Weber in Zagreb but was 8. Howard Henley (USA) an excellent 2nd in the World Cup. Smith was sporad- 9. Bill Green (USA) ically brilliant and rates 7th ahead of Henley who 10. (GFR) cracked 45*0 twice but ran poorly in Europe. Green and Schmid cranked out a couple of fast clockings but spread themselves over other events. - 18 - 800m 1. Seb Coe (UK) Coe was as dominant as Moses (who’ll move into the 2. James Robinson (USA) 800 in 1985) in his event. He can be counted with J. Mike Boit (KEN) Harbig, Snell and Juantorena as one of the 'greats’. 4. Olaf Beyer (GDR) A long way behind James Robinson takes 2nd ahead of 5. Detlef Wagenknecht(GDR) Mike Boit. The American was 2nd in Rome, won his 5th 6. Harald Schmid (GFR) US title and took the ISTAF and Van Damme races. Boit 7. Sam Koskei (KEN) ran sub-1.44.6 twice and now has 22 clockings under 8. (UK) 1.45 (the next best - Wolhuter has 11) but concentrated 9. Willi Wulbeck (GFR) his energies more on the 1500. Beyer edges 10. Joaquim Cruz (BRA) Wagenknecht on the basis of his GDR championships win. Schmid was almost as good as Robinson until struck down by illness, while Koskei was the dominant runner on the US collegiate scene. Cook overshadowed by Coe scored a resounding win over Boit and Schmid in Budapest, while Wulbeck won his 8th consecutive national title (!) and edged Beyer for 2nd in the European Cup. Cruz set a world junior record and won the CAC title and will be a force in the future.

1500m 1. Seb Coe (UK) An undefeated season and 2 world records gave Coe the 2. Steve Ovett (UK) edge over Ovett who won everything (except Bislett) up 5. Sydney Maree (USA/RSA) to the World Cup. Maree won the NCAA/TAC double and 4« Steve Scott (USA) was superb after the World Cup. Scott became the first 5. John Walker (NZ) American to run a sub 5.50 mile and had a better win- 6. Mike Boit (KEN) loss record than Walker. The Kiwi was magnificent - 7. Olaf Beyer (GDR) his tally of sub-3.42.0m/4.00.0y clockings is now more 8. (UK) than 100, while another veteran, Boit, finally showed 9. Jose-L Gonzalez (SPA) his abilities over the 1500. Beyer won the European 10. (SUD) Cup and was just edged for 2nd in the World Cup by Walker. Cram won the AAA, showed maturity beyond his years and cracked 5-50, as did Gonzalez, but the latter tailed off after Lausanne in mid-July. Khalifa usually ran 800s, but produced one excellent race in Budapest. Wessinghage, Coghlan and Harbour all produced good times during the season but were inconsistent.

5000m 1. (EIR) Coghlan won 2 fine races —the AAA and the Weltklasse — 2. (KEN) and 1 atrocious one - the World Cup - to rate No.1. 3. Hans-J. Kunze (GDR) Rono ran himself into top condition and set a ’paced* 4. (UK) WR, finally getting out of his 13.12 rut! Kunze 5. Valeriy Abramov (SU) progressed from 3rd in Zagreb, 2nd in Rome through to a 6. Barry Smith (UK) European record in the best race of the year. Moorcroft 7. Thomas Wessinghage (GFR) showed Viren—like tactical sense in the European Cup and 8. Bill McChesney (USA) won an excellent fast race in Lausanne. Abramov, 2nd 9. Suleiman Nyambui (TAN) in Zagreb broke his own SU record and just edges Barry 10. Fernando Mamede (POR) Smith who beat him in Helsinki and won the Golden 5000. Wessinghage beat Rono in Koln and set a national record to rescue a disappointing season. McChesney topped the world list for most of the season and would have ranked higher had he won in Gateshead. Nyambui won the NCAA and ran well, but briefly, in Europe. Mamede had 3 good times but lacked competitive fire.

10.000m 1. Werner Schildhauer (GDR) Schlldhauer won the European/World Cup races and duly 2. Mohamed Kedir (ETH) merits 1st place. Kedir ran 5 sub 28.10 races and beat 5. (UK) Yifter’s national record in Rome, where he became the 4. Fernando Mamede (POR) 1 st Ethiopian not to win the World Cup 10k, Smith wiped 5. Henry Rono (KEN) out Schildhauer in the UK—GDR match and lost the Golden 10,000m (eont) 10K only through inexperience. Mamede achieved the 6. (FIN) No.2 performance of all-time but faded away after a 7. (USA) 27.55-6 behind Kedir in early June. Rono ran just 8. (ITA) one race but looked set to break his world record by 9. Julian Goater (UK) mid-September. Vainip produced 4 races under 28.07 10. Mike McLeod (UK) and heads Salazar and Ortis who beat him in Rome. Ortis (with ) made the most welcome come- back of the season. A p.b. in Brussels nets the consistent Goater 9th place ahead of the winner of the Golden 10,000 Mike McLeod.

3000 SC 1. Boguslaw Maminski (POL) After the tragedy of Malinowski, it seems fitting that 2. (USA) a Pole should be top-ranked here. In truth there was 3. Mariano Scartezzini (ITA) little to choose between the top 3, with Maminski's 4. (GER) consistency the telling factor. Marsh’s ’refusal' at 5. Domingo Ramon (SPA) the Rome water-jump cost him top ranking, while 6. (USA) Scartezzini was the best when he was 'on* but had some 7. Tommy Ekblom (FIN) bad races to offset against his brilliant Zagreb win. 8. Ralf Ponitzsch (GDR) Ilg beat Maminski in London and took 3rd in the European 9. Masanari Shintaku (JAP) Cup to edge Ramon for 4th. John Gregorek beat' the 10. Amos Korir (KEN) Soviets in Leningrad and won the WUG ahead of Ekblom. Ponitzsch was beaten by Shintaku in Rome but had a couple of other good races to support his ranking. Korir, the third fastest of the year, but injured a good deal of the time, rounds out the top 10.

110H 1. (USA) Foster ran 13.03, won the TAC, the US v SU dual and the 2. (USA) World Cup but still doesn’t rate 1st place. Nehemiah 3. Sam Turner (USA) became the 1st man to break 13 seconds, and then had 3 4. Alejandro Casanas (CUB) sub 13.10 clockings in 5 days, With Coe's 800 WR, 5. Dedy Cooper (USA) Nehemiah's 12.93 was the performance of the year. 6. Tonie Campbell (USA) Amongst the mortals Sam Turner pulled an interesting 7. Julius Ivan (CS) switch by moving from the 400H to the 11 OH with great 8. Larry Cowling (USA) success - 3 clockings of 13.43 or better testifying to 9. (SPA) this. Casanas surprised all watchers with his superb 10. (UK) World Cup showing losing out only by 4/100. Tonie Campbell and Dedy Cooper both had good races, but the latter's win-loss record was slightly better. Ivan beat Campbell in Budapest, finished 3rd in the World Cup but was at his best in Czechoslavakia. Cowling won the NCAA and the WUG but was not quite as good as the Americans ranked above him. The last 2 places went to Europeans just ahead of .

1. Ed Moses (USA) They'll have to start handicapping Ed Moses soon. 2. (USA) This, year he topped his previous record of 4 sub-48 3. (GDR) clockings in a season (1979 and 1980) with 6 and 4. Harald Schmid (GFR) remained unbeaten and unthreatened. Phillips showed 5. David Lee (USA) signs for the future that he might upset the king and 6. James King (USA) moved to 4th all-time with his 48.10. Beck beat an 7. Bart Williams (USA) unwell Schmid in Zagreb and finished a distant 2nd to 8. Dave Patrlak (USA) Moses in Rome. . Lee ran more than 40 races in 1981 and 9. Harry Schulting (HOL) understandably lost to some lesser lights, but won the 10, Vasiliy Arkhipenko (SU) WUG. King and Williams traded wins with the former a little more consistent, while Patrick was 4th in the TAC and 3rd in the NCAA (though only 5th in the WUG). Schulting and Arkhipenko rank in the order of their finish at the World Cup. - 20 - High Jump 1. Tyke Peacock (USA) Like the 3000 SC this was disappointing after a good 2. Roland Dalhauser (SWZ) Olympic year. Tyke Peacock was ranked 13th= on the 3. Gerd Nagel (GFR) world list but cleared 2.28 by about 5 centimetres to 4. Valeriy Sereda (SU) win the World Cup. A week earlier he had won in 5. Leo Williams (USA) Brussels with the same height - clearing it in his 6. Dietmar Mogenburg (GFR) sweat pants! Dalhauser cleared 2.31 and won the 7. Aleksey Demyanuk (SU) European Indoor title, while Nagel was runner-up in 8. (USA) both the European and World Cups. Sereda won the 9. Jeff Woodard (USA) European Cup but folded badly in Rome. Leo Williams, 10. Zhu Jianhua (CHNj who I predict will be the first American to clear 2.35, won the NCAA indoors and outdoors plus the World Cup and comes next. The next 3 were extremely erratic but had moments of brilliance - Stones particularly notable with his best jumping since 1976. Woodard was strictly an indoor specialist but his 2.33 cannot be ignored. Zhu was injured in Rome but won the Asian Trials with 2.30 and lost the WUG only on a jump-off.

Pole Vault 1. Konstantin Volkov (SU) Winning the World Cup, WUG, Golden Vault and tying for 2. (ERA) 1st in the European Cup did no harm to Volkov’s 3. Jean-Michel Bellot (FRA) reputation and indeed he was an easy first. Vigneron 4. Vladimir Polyakov (SU) won the European Indoor title, and had 6 leaps of 5.70 5. Philippe Houvion (FRA) or better. As before, his competitive record was 6. (USA) patchy and Bellot, who tied with Volkov for the Euro- 7. Keith Stock (UK) pean Cup, was generally a tougher competitor. Polyakov 8. Aleksandr Krupskiy (SU) was weak at times but set a WR and cleared 5*70 for 2nd 9. Sergey Kulibaba (SU) in the WUG. Houvion was consistent over 5.50 but over- 10. Viktor Spasov (SU) shadowed by his teammates, while Bell hit his best form for 5 years. Stock beat Volkov in a European Cup semi- final and confirmed his ability with 5.65 at the DN-Gala. Krupskiy and Kulibaba were at their best in the USSR, although the former did garner 2nd place in the European indoor. Spasov edges Olson for 10th on the basis of his clearing a higher height for his national title.

Long Jump 1. Carl Lewis (USA) Lewis had the top 5 marks of the year and won the NCAA/ 2. Larry Wyricks (USA^ TAC and World Cup to rank No.1, yet it seems cruel to 3. Rolf Bernhard. (SWZ) rate Myricks 2nd. He beat Lewis at the TAC indoors, 4. Laszlo Szalrna (HUN) jumped 8.30 in 10 competitions and had a hairline foul 5. Gary Honey • (AUS) of 8.76 at the TAC. Behind these two the standard fell 6. Shamil Abbyasov (SU) dramatically. Bernhard and Szalma won the European 7. Uwe Lange (GDR) Indoor and the WUG respectively, while Honey almost upset 8. Yuhuang (CHN) Lewis in the World Cup. Abbyasov took 3rd in the World 9. Vladimir Tsepelev (SU) Cup and European Indoor and Lange won the GDR title and 10. Atanas Chochev (BUL) the European Cup. Liu jumped well at the WUG and was a solid 4th in the World Cup. Tsepelev and Chochev had good moments, but apart from the top 2 this was a weak event in 1981.

Triple Jump Not just a superb showman, produced the 1. Willie Banks (USA) finest season ever by a triple-jumper, with no less than 2. Joao de Oliveira (BRA) 10 marks at 17.04 or better and the 2 furthest sea level 3. Zou Zhen Xian (CHN) jumps ever. de Oliveira was unimpressive before the 4. Jaak Uudmae (SU) World Cup, but won the finest competition of the 3rd 5. Gennadiy Valyukevich (SU) World Cup ahead of 's exciting Zou who achieved an 6. Aleksandr Beskrovny (SU) Asian record on his last jump of the competition. Zou 7. Mike Marlow (USA) had earlier won the WUG and thoroughly deserves 3rd 8. Bela Bakosi (HUN) place. Uudmae won the European Cup but never looked as 9. (UK) good as in 1980, while Valyukevich took a dubiously 10. Shamil Abbyasov (SU) judged win over Banks in the USA-SU match. Beskrovny is - 21 - (cont) ahead of Marlow on the basis of beating him in that same dual meet. Bakosi and Connor's seasons were patchy but the Hungarian was generally more consistent. Abbyasov's short lived indoor WR was enough to land him 10th place ahead of Ken Lorraway, Steve Hanna and Aston Moore all of whom had claims to be in the top 10.

Shot 1. Udo Beyer (GBR) Beyer didn't compete much but with wins at Rome, Zagreb 2. Brian Oldfield (USA) plus the GBR title - all between 21.40 and 21.44» he 3. Mike Carter (USA) was again the dominant force. One wonders what he could 4. Yevgeniy Mironov (SU) throw in his second event of his junior days - the hammer 5. (USA) At the age of 36 Brian Oldfield is as good as ever. He 6. Matthias Schmidt (GBR) had 18 marks of 21.04 or better, but was only 4"th in the 7. (GBR) US v SU dual. Mike Carter began to realise his 8. Hans-Jurgen Jacobi (GBR) potential, beat Oldfield at the TAC and won the NCAA, WUG 9. Mikhail Gusev (SU) and US v SU. Mironov was second in the European Cup and 10. Reijo Stahlberg (FIN) in Rome, but like 5th placer Laut was notably a long way down on his season's best when it came to major champion- ships. The 2 Schmidts come next. Matthias was very strong in early season and even defeated Beyer, but tailed off later, with Wolfgang beating him in the GBR championships. Jacobi was solid in June, particularly the GBR-SU match, where he edged Gusev. Stahlberg takes 10th place - he was more consistent than Feuerbach, Reichenbach and the rest.

Biscua 1. Armin Lemme (GBR) The initial problem was what -to do about Plucknett. 2. Wolfgang Schmidt (GBR) Clearly he was the best - but he was the one found to 5. John Powell (USA) have an added ingredient. Accordingly, he has been 4. Luis M. Belis (CUB) excluded, which leaves Armin Lemme, winner of the same 5. Imrich Bugar (CS) triple as Beyer, ranked No.1. Schmidt generally beat 6. (FIN) Lemme' but lost the GBR title and the chance to win the 7. Knut Hjeltnes (NOR) major meetings. Powell was clearly the best 'normal' 8. (USA) American - but why really did he not appear in Rome. 9. Dmitriy Kovtsun (SU) Belis reaffirmed his reputation as a solid thrower with 10. (GFR) his 2nd place in the TAC and World Cup; at'104kg he is the lightest top thrower around. Bugar was very con- sistent and could well spring a surprise in next year. Tuokko didn't compete much outside Finland but had a good win over the US-based Hjeltnes in his European Cup-semi. Art Burns was the best of the US army of veterans (a piece of trivia - you have to go down to 16th place on the US list to find a thrower with 2 syllables in his first name - Carlos Scott). Kovtsun was the best of an uninspired bunch of Soviet throwers. Wagner disappointed in Zagreb but had good throws else- where.

Hammer 1977 was an off post-Olympic year for Sedykh, but 1981 1. (SU) was very different. He dominated Riehm in both the 2. Karl-Hans Riehm (GFR) European and World Cups. Ploghaus was the best in the 3. Klaus Ploghaus (GFR) world early season but tailed off after being beaten 4. Sergey Litvinov (SU; conclusively by Riehm in the GFR championships. Litvinov, 5. Igor Nikulin (SU) as usual, fluctuated wildly but was^marvellous in the 6. Juri Tamm (SU) SU v UK match. Nikulin had a sprained ankle most of the 7. Juha Tiainen (FIN) year, but recovered to win the Soviet title in September. 8. Roland Steuk (GBR) Tawn was runner-up to Ploghaus in the WUG (and had a 78m 9. (iTA) throw inexplicably ruled a foul in that meet). Tiainen 10. Aleksandr Kozlov (SU) was the best of the Finns and beat Ploghaus in the Coke meeting. Steuk started his season well (producing a 79m throw warming up in the UK match) but tailed off to a disastrous 7th place in Rome. Urlando was solid - with a good 3^d in the World Cup, while Kozlov completes the top 10. - 22 -

Javelin Kula, who, in the West at least, carries with him the 1. Dainis Kula (SU) sti gma. of shady Olympic judging, showed Lusis-like 2. (GDR) qualities in coming from behind to win the World Cup 3. Pentti Sinersaari (FIN) from Michel. The East German was strictly a 'one 4. (GFR) throw' a competition man but won well in Zagreb. 5. Gerald Weiss (GDR) Sinersaari was disappointing (as usual) in the World 6. Seppo Hovinen (FIN) Cup but had 4 competitions at 9'1.34 or better. 7. (USA) Tafelmeier has still to provide a 90“ throw but was 8. (HUN) solid throughout the season. Weiss won the GDR title 9. (GDR) and was second in the WUG. Hdvinen .and Roggy shone 10. Miklos Nemeth (HUN) for only a short period in June/July but at a very high level. Paragi was a shadow of his former self but had a few good competitions. Uwe Hohn looks like the (very large) shape of things to come, while Nemeth as usual competed from January to October (not bad for someone who retired last year) with a notable victory against the Finns on his last throw in the dual meet in September.

Decathlon The European Cup, GDR v SU and GFR v SU duals were the 1. Rainer Pottel (GDR) main reference points for rankings. The GDR champion 2. Uwe Freimuth (GDR) and European Cup winner duly ranks 1st. Uwe Freimuth 3. Jurgen Hingsen (GFR) lost by 2 points to Hingsen in Birmingham, but was 4. Yuriy Kutsenko (su) clearly better elsewhere. Kutsenko was injured in the 5. Tito Steiner (ARG) European Cup but won the SU-GDR dual. Steiner, the 6. Siegfried Wentz (GFR) giant Argentine won his 3rd NCAA title with an excellent 7. Atanas Andonov(BUL) score and duly ranks 5th. Wentz, the GFR 'junior' 8. Aleksandr Nevskiy (SU) champion, comes next ahead of Bulgaria's much improved 9. Josef Zeilbauer (AUT) Andonov whose 8200+ scores were backed up with a Cup 10. Andreas Rizzi (GFR) semi-final win. Nevskiy won the SU-US dual. 'Veteran Zeilbauer won the traditional Gotzis competition. Andreas Rizzi, the GFR champion, ranks 10th just ahead of Kratschmer, Stark and Anderson. Thompson was robbed of a ranking by the horrendous weather in Canada..
