NEWSLETTER – 2/2013 21 June 2013

From the Headmaster

Dear Parents

An addition to the College’s magnificent facilities, the “John Fairbairn Astro” will be formally inaugurated and opened at a sport day against on 3 August 2013.

The proposed programme will be pre-arranged so that matches between the two schools end at 11:00. At 11:10 a short ceremony will be conducted at the astro including the traditional “cutting of the ribbon” and naming the astro. Thereafter the College’s 1st boy’s hockey team will play against The Settlers 1st boys’ hockey team.

At this juncture the College expresses thanks and appreciation to the parents for their support of this venture. Congratulations to the Governing Body, under the leadership of Mr Peter Bresler, and especially to Mr Tittleton who played a prominent role throughout the project. Thank you to Mr Koffeman, Mr Brink and Mr Swart who supported me as members on the Campus Development Committee during the entire construction process. Well done to Mrs Ridley from the bursar’s office who controlled the finances. We acknowledge and express thanks to the construction team:

 Contractors Strata Civils  Engineers KFD Wilkinson  Quantity surveyors Shevel & Simpson  Project management Alastair Simpson

Mr Brink has been appointed as Head of Hockey and as the manager of the astro turf. Mr Brink will also continue to teach a portion of his academic lessons. We wish him well on his appointment.

As always, the second term was a hectic and full term, but extremely satisfying. Your children have given good accounts of themselves in the classroom and in the sphere of extramurals. Details of the term’s activities follow. On reading this, you will join me in saying thank you to all the staff for a very successful second term.

I wish all a restful holiday period.

B MARCHAND HEADMASTER

ACADEMICS AND EXAMINATIONS

The College’s Second Term Roll of Honour will be distributed with the final reports on Monday, 22 July 2013.

Message to the Matrics

Matrics, you are on the verge of starting on a new path. It is all about your choices and your reactions. Your life will be decided on how you react to what happens to you. Although you do not have full control over what happens in life, your reactions and the choices you make will determine your success. Remember that absolutely everything you do, give, say or even think, is like a Boomerang: it will come back to you.

Make use of the 3 week holiday to reflect on past examinations and prepare for the final exams. You have to make use of this time to study.

Good luck with the last stretch of your school career. Your future is in your hands.

Mrs M Combrink GRADE HEAD: GRADE 12

PASTORAL AND DISCIPLINE

Ladies’ Assembly

On 6 May we held a special ladies assembly - after all, the ladies at our school are special.

We briefly touched on some of the school rules regarding the dress and appearance of the ladies. The ladies were also reminded of what is expected of a lady and how a lady should behave at all times.

Our ladies are diamonds but now and then we just polish them to shine brighter and to become more valuable.

Freedom Day

On 22 April we celebrated our annual Freedom day (27 April).

We were once again reminded that:

* We are privileged to live in a were everybody is free. * Today we all have equal rights. * We must never forget those who gave up their lives for freedom. * All of us may have missed out on great friendships because of the laws in the past.

Mrs E le Grange OPERATION MANCO

School Discipline

Discipline remains one of the cornerstones upon which the College is built. Although discipline is an ever increasingly difficult task, it is one from which we will not falter.

I would like to highlight the following concerns:

• Detentions: During the term a large number of learners were placed in Saturday morning detentions due to not attending their grade head detentions. A reminder to parents that there is a reply slip to be signed for grade head detention and that this documentation is kept on the learner’s file. • School Bags: A number of the school bags have graffiti. This is not allowed. Such bags will be confiscated. Learners must ensure that their bags are neatly kept and are presentable at all times. • School Uniform: Many learners arrive at school with dirty blazers – these can be machine washed. Many of the blazers are missing buttons – these may be purchased at the bookroom. A reminder to all the boys that you are expected to wear a belt as part of your uniform. NB: Girls’ grey winter skirts must be purchased at Rothmans, the School’s official uniform stockists. Skirts obtained from other retail clothing stores do not comply with the uniform requirements. • Grooming: All boys are reminded that you are required to be cleanly shaven every day. Please consult your term planner for the dates of hair inspection. (Each term starts with a hair inspection on the 1st day). • Cell phones: Cell phones continue to be a problem. Cell phones must be off (not on silent or vibrate mode) during the entire academic school day.

I ask for the co-operation of the learners and the assistance of the parents regarding these matters, and by so doing, keeping up the high standards that we have become accustomed to at the College.

RCL Executive

A big thank you to the RCL Executive for their tireless efforts in performing their duties on a daily basis. They form a vital cog in the discipline structure and their input is of immense value. Thank you also to the head and deputy head prefects for their leadership in this regard.

AMENITIES

It is with great anticipation and excitement that we observe the building process of our new Hockey Astro, now nearing the completion stage. Of course there is still much to do, as at the time of writing, there is still paving around the field, fencing, construction of the shelter and most importantly, the laying of the shock pad layer which also serves as a drainage layer and then the actual astro turf layer to be completed.

The projected completion date remains the end of June, unless the process is hampered and delayed by serious winter storms.

Sports Captains’ Seminar

On Tuesday, 16 April 2013, we held our 8th annual sports captains’ seminar. The aim of the event is to guide our future sports leaders and to equip our sports captains with leadership skills.

The seminar is open to all our captains, both boys and girls of all the teams in all the age groups for summer and winter sports – even our 1st Aid and Chess captains were there.

The learners were addressed by Mr Joey Salmans (Western Province Rugby Referee and Head of Sport at Boys’) and taken through some leadership training. The basic expectations of captaincy were also discussed.

Thank you to Mr Brink for his assistance and also to the learners for their contributions. Thank you also to the 51 captains/vice captains who were present on the day.

The seminar was enjoyed by all.

Rugby

U/19A

We have always known that the first half of the season would be a tough one, with our boys playing teams that traditionally play in a higher league. Nevertheless, the boys saw this as a challenge and an opportunity to judge themselves against strong opposition.

The first game of the season against Rugby Club was a ‘tale of two halves’. We did not stick to our structures or implement our game plan and the half time score was indicative of the play that we were producing (0-17). However, after a ‘stern’ talking to, the boys came out in the Second Half and played attractive Rugby, pinning the opposition in their own twenty-two for the majority of that half. The boys scored two quick tries in succession, but could not convert on a final opportunity, thus losing a tight game 14-20.

The second game of the season was against Bellville Technical High School, a team that traditionally plays in a league higher than us. This was undoubtedly our poorest game of the season, with the boys making numerous handling errors, throwing fifty-fifty passes and losing concentration throughout the game. It became a case of the opposition capitalising from our errors and converting their opportunities into points.

We had always known that the fixture against Hottentots Holland High School would be a tough one. The attractive brand of running Rugby that they play is something that we have tried to implement in our game structures. It was a very attractive game to watch, with both teams counter-attacking at every opportunity and the traditional ‘kick and chase’ game plan being non-existent.

We then travelled to Mooreesburg to take on Dirkie Uys High School, another traditionally strong Rugby school that has been producing strong results in the past few years. This was another tough encounter with the boys producing a good performance during the first half. However, as the match progressed, the constant tackling took its toll and the opposition capitalised, running in a few soft tries to comfortably win the match.

The final game of the season against Fairmont High School was definitely the highlight of the season. We had always targeted this game as being a ‘must win’ game as both teams traditionally play a similar brand of Rugby. Numerous errors in the first half put us under needless pressure, causing us to give away many penalties. Fairmont took advantage of this and went into the break with a 0-11 lead. The boys produced an excellent Second Half performance and dominated possession and territory. We came close to scoring on numerous occasions but could simply not cross the try line. The boys’ commitment and disappointment was clearly evident after the game.

We look forward to a much improved second half to the season and are excited to depart to RPC Rugby Training Centre in Riebeeck West during the June holidays to begin preparation for next season.

Mr H Pienaar Coach

U/19B

Despite our best efforts, the 2nd Rugby Team had a poor 1st half to the season. We played schools that were much too strong for us and as a result, lost all our games. However, we shall keep on trying and intend to produce better results in the 2nd half of the season.

Mr D Hanekom Allan Esterhuizen Manager Coach

U/16A

The U/16A team had an excellent season, winning four of their five matches.

Opponents Result Score Tygerberg Club Won 10 - 3 Bellville Technical High School Won 3 - 0 Hottentots Holland High School Lost 10 - 3 Dirkie Uys High School Won 54 - 0 Fairmont High School Won 20 - 5

Points for: 90 Points against: 18

I am looking forward to the second half of the season. Brandon Moodie (assistant coach) and I are grooming the team for U/19 and I am sure that many of these determined players will make next year’s squad.

A special thank you to Brandon for doing a fantastic job.

Mr L Lawson Coach

U/15A

As a result of us not taking part in the sports day this year, the start to our Rugby season has been a bit disjointed. I am pleased that most of the U/14 players from last year are still playing Rugby this year, so we are again able to field an A and a B side at U/15 level. Even though the results are mixed, most of our matches have been closely contested affairs and the boys have improved their standard of play with every passing week. A highlight for me this term was the nail-biter against Fairmont High School, only being decided in the last minute of the game.

The results are as follows:

Opponents Result Score Tygerberg Club Won 8 - 5 Bellville Technical High School Lost 3 - 15 Hottentots Holland High School Won 25 - 17 Dirkie Uys High School Lost 10 - 29 Fairmont High School Lost 5 - 10

Well done so far U/15’s, we look forward to even better results next term.

Mr M Koffeman and Mr T Russouw Coaches

U/14A and U/14B

We had some really tough fixtures this term. Our players come from ten different Primary Schools and some are playing Rugby for the first time.

The highlight of the term was definitely the victory against JG Meiring at the sports day. Despite having lost most of our matches, the boys are improving weekly and a very good team spirit prevails. We expect a significant improvement next term.

Mr A Fourie Coach

A huge thank you to all the parents for your loyal support and encouragement on Saturday mornings and also your willingness to always assist with transport – your sons and I appreciate it very much.

Netball

This term has been jam packed with matches, but it gave our learners a wonderful opportunity to show off their excellent Netball talents.

U/19A AND B

With utter determination the girls have developed not only skills, but unreserved willpower. Their team spirit and optimism contributed to a successful season.

The U/19B team has had a challenging season so far, but we are going from strength to strength! This team of players personified “never giving up”. Through sheer determination you bettered even your best! Maajidah Hassiem has been the pillar of the team – thank you for your good leadership and strong, positive attitude on court.

Congratulations on the wonderful start to a good season, girls - I look forward to Term 3!

Mrs J De Wet Coach

U/19C AND D

It has been a pleasure and very exciting to be the coach of the U/19C and D girls. They are a very pleasant and lively group of girls – always willing to practise and learn something new.

Absenteeism is scarce, as the girls regularly attend – the attendance level has definitely improved in comparison to last year. We played three matches of which we won two. I look forward to coaching these teams next term!

Mrs J van Tonder Coach

U/16A AND B

Both the U/16A and B teams were faced with a great challenge due to tough opposition, but still worked smoothly as a team. The girls can be commended on their dedication and endurance this term. Very well done girls – you have been a delight to coach and work with. You have improved tremendously over the first half of the term and used new skills in game situations to enhance your play. I am really proud of you all and I am looking forward to Term 3.

Mrs C Saayman Coach

U/16C AND D

The U/16C and D teams played very well this season. The girls can be commended on their dedication and endurance this term. They showed exceptional team work and spirit. I am very proud of them!

Miss J Malcolm Coach

U/14A AND B

The U/14A and B Netball teams have had a successful season thus far. The girls are very committed and eager to learn new skills to improve their game. Their team spirit can clearly be seen from the results for the 1st half of the season.

Both teams can be congratulated on ending the 1st half of the season on a very good footing - with the B-team being placed an overall 2nd on the log. The B-team is definitely a team to be reckoned with. The secret to their success is the fact that they play as a unit and stick to their game plan right till the end. As coach I am looking forward to the 2nd half of the season and hope that both teams will end top of the log, thus making Fairbairn proud.

Ms. C Marais Coach

U/14C AND D

I would like to commend the girls on their team morale and spirit. The girls are always on time for practice and eager to begin and team members and parents are very supportive at games.

Miss N de Wet Coach

I would like to congratulate the girls on the magnificent spirit displayed during our annual interhouse Netball challenge. You have done the College proud by not only supporting your houses, but showing a beautiful attitude towards Fairbairn Netball.

I would also like to thank and congratulate all the teachers on a very successful season so far. Without your “blood, sweat and tears” we would not have started the 2013 season with so many successes! We look forward to our jam packed Term 3!

Mrs. J. De Wet MISTRESS IN CHARGE – NETBALL

Girls’ Squash

The girls’ Squash season started off on an exciting note, with a brilliant new coach, Danni van Niekerk, looking after the girls.

This compensated for the departure of Mrs Carstens and Mrs Pinder from the team. Danni is a lively addition to the Fairbairn Squash family and we look forward to having her with us for a long time to come. Although the teams started practicing very early this year under the wing of Danni, the season so far has not been as successful as the previous season, due to the departure of a large number of senior girls.

Nevertheless, the girls gave it their all and enjoyed every minute of every game. Highlights include Chantel Tittleton’s inclusion in the Western Province U/18 Squash team, as well as the many girls playing their first Squash matches.

I trust that the Fairbairn Squash team will improve in leaps and bounds as the season continues. We are looking for many more talented players.

Mrs T Warrington MISTRESS IN CHARGE - GIRLS’ SQUASH

Boys’ Squash

This has been an up and down start to our season for 2013. Our 1st Team has done fairly well, but the 2nd and 3rd Teams have met some very difficult opponents, often playing against 1st Teams. That said, the players must be congratulated for their enthusiasm and dedication to the sport. Quite a few of the players picked up a racket for the 1st time this year and they are improving every week.

Our 1st Team has done fairly well, winning 3 out of their 5 matches, with the game against Bishops ending on a points count, where we lost by one point. Our 2nd and 3rd sides unfortunately lost all their matches, but are improving daily.

We look forward to the next round.

Mr A Erasmus MASTER IN CHARGE – BOYS’ SQUASH

Girls’ Hockey

1st Team

The season started off with trials and the selection of quite a large number of new young players. Without the Brackenfell Sports day, it was difficult to determine the strengths and weaknesses of the squad before the season started.

For many of the new younger players, the astro turf was a new experience and it took some adjustment getting used to a much faster game.

The season has not gone well for us so far, as we are plagued by serious injuries. Losing 3 key players to prolonged injuries has put us at a serious disadvantage. When playing against stronger sides we do not have the manpower to make the substitutions needed. A lack of experience and nerves among the younger players has cost us many goals, but time and experience will soon solve this problem.

The results for the first part of the season are as follows:

FAIRBAIRN vs. Result Draw 1-1 Reddam Lost 2-0 Won 3-1 Dirkie Uys Won 4-1 Won 1-0 Fairmont Lost 1-0 Tygerberg Lost 4-0 Brackenfell Lost 2-0

We congratulate Robyn Pinder for once again making it into the Western Province as well as the Northern Suburbs teams. She is an absolute pleasure to watch and we wish her all the best this holiday.

We would like to thank our parents for all the loyal support we receive every Saturday morning in the freezing cold and wet weather. Knowing that you are there to support the team always inspires the girls to play their best.

Lastly, to our coach Nikki duToit: thanks for all your insight and coaching. Without you we are lost.

Mr M Standish Manager and Umpire

The 2nd girls’ Hockey team has had a mixed start to the season.

Despite some very tough games, I would like to commend the girls on their sportsmanship, dedication and resilient attitudes.

Miss M Maltby Coach

There are thirty-four girls in the squad and the majority are enthusiastic and keen to improve their skills. A number of the girls have never played Hockey before. The team is beginning to gel and show camaraderie and responsibility towards each other.

We are looking forward to next term and hope all members will work on improving fitness during the holidays.

Mrs M Ackermann Coach MISTRESS IN CHARGE – GIRLS’ HOCKEY

Boys’ Hockey

1st Team

As always we have to count our blessings and give thanks to different parties who are very supportive of our team. The team is very grateful for the sponsorships received from Raith Gourmet, Ms Cathy Teixeira, Tacsteel and Mr Anton Potgieter. We also want to thank our parents, school friends, the headmaster and especially the 1st girls’ Hockey team for their loyal and vigorous support throughout this past term.

The season started with our participation in the annual Fairmont High School Easter Tournament. We faced some seriously tough opposition at this tournament and could only manage one victory from our 6 matches and were placed 10th in the tournament. It was a good indication, especially to the new 1st team members, as to how difficult this level of Hockey is going to be this season.

Our league results are not a fair reflection of the quality of Hockey that the team has produced. A 1-1 draw against Westerford, in our first match, got our league off to a fair start. In the two following matches against Brackenfell and Durbanville, we dominated play, but could not capitalise on our scoring opportunities and failed to block all their scoring opportunities. This led to two losses that should have been victories.

Our two derby day matches against Dirkie Uys and Fairmont were complete opposites, but thoroughly enjoyed by all involved. The match against Dirkie Uys was the first time this year we set foot on a grass Hockey field. We created nearly 50 scoring opportunities but could only convert 5 of them. With five minutes to go and a 5-1 lead, the team relaxed and gave the opposition the chance to score two more goals. We thus managed a 5-3 victory. Fairmont was a completely different occasion. Although the boys played their hearts out, we struggled against a team that consisted of 11 Provincial players. The team actually played very well and has to be commended on their “never- say-die” attitude. We still have two more league games left for this term and we will give our all to bring back pleasing results. The team is also looking forward to the knock-out tournament which starts next term.

Mr A Brink Coach

U/19B

The second boys’ Hockey team started their fixtures this term where they faced opposition: Westerford, , Rondebosch, Fairmont and Durbanville. The boys practised on grass and showed their skill and flair against Durbanville on grass where they beat them 5-1. We, however, drew our matches against Westerford and Bergvliet and lost to Rondebosch and Fairmont on the Astro turf. We are awaiting our own Astro

turf with great anticipation. This will improve the level of Hockey and we hope to have a successful 2nd season, capping more wins under the belt.

I would like to congratulate my whole team for their great dedication towards Hockey this season, on and off the field.

Mr A Mellett Coach

U/16A and B

The U/16A and B sides have a new coach: Mr Hobbs from Durbanville Hockey Club. He has intensified training sessions and has worked extremely hard with the boys. Despite all efforts, the results are still not satisfactory. The A-side lost all matches and the B-side managed one win. I believe these results are mainly due to the lack of training on Astro turf, as most of our matches were played on Astro turf. This will change as of Term 3, 2013. We look forward to our own astro turf!

Mr A Schütz Coach

U/16C

The boys got off to a slow start at the beginning of the season, but they gained enthusiasm as their skills improved. With each practice, improvement was noted.

The U/16C boys are a dedicated and lively bunch. Three matches were played against: SACS, Fairmont High and Westerford. This was a good season. We look forward to the new season and the challenges ahead.

Miss C Schroeder Coach

U/14A

This term the U/14A Hockey boys played with skill and excellent enthusiasm on and off the field. The boys’ camaraderie over the season was inspiring.

Miss T Meyer Coach

U/14B

The U/14B boys’ Hockey team played exceptionally well in their 1st season, but have unfortunately not managed to secure a victory against their opponents Cannon Creek, Chesterhouse and Fairmont High School. Throughout the season the team has shown tremendous dedication and uncanny sportsmanship, both on and off the field. They have worked very hard at developing their skills, working well together as a team.

Each and every player has improved dramatically and we looking forward to the second half of the season.

Miss M Cooke Coach

U/14C

The U/14C boys’ Hockey team has not played many games thus far, but has definitely displayed great potential. They work well together as a team and just need to fine-tune their skills.

Thus far they have played against:

SACS drew 1 – 1. Fairmont High School lost 3 – 1.

I look forward to a great second half of the season.

Amy Rugan was Best Junior Speaker in 3 out of 4 debates. Amy Hillier did us proud. She is a most reliable captain and has been a member of the Debating team for five consecutive years, managing not to miss one debate. Amy has made a lasting impression on her team mates and managed to be the ‘Best Junior Speaker’ on her very first debate in Grade 8 and the ‘Best Senior Speaker’ on her very last debate in Grade 12.

A huge thank you to Mrs Hillier, who assisted with transport.

Music Department

Choir

During Term 2 the Choir continued in its mission for 2013, to study new repertoire and to prepare for upcoming concerts at the school.

I would like to officially welcome Mrs Howell who will be accompanying the Choir and assisting the Choir director. Mrs Howell joined the Choir from the second term and took over from Mrs Bruwer as Head of Music at Fairbairn College.

The Choir’s next performance will be at the College’s Cultural Evening, where they will perform their annual repertoire. A sit-down dinner will be served at this event, while talented learners from the school and Choir will entertain the audience throughout the evening. Tickets will be sold from the beginning of Term 3. Further information in this regard will be conveyed next term.

Lastly, I would like to thank the dedicated Choir members for their commitment and hard work during this term! Enjoy the June Holidays!

Orchestra

Theme from “James Bond”, Katy Perry’s “Firework” and “La Paloma” are just some of the pieces the orchestra has learnt this term in preparation for the Cultural Evening on 14 August. There are 15 pupils in this newly formed group, with instruments ranging from violins to saxophones, including the new drumkit. Rehearsals take place every Tuesday afternoon and we are looking forward to every pupil who plays an orchestral instrument in the school, to join this enthusiastic group, so that a full-size orchestra can one day be reached.

Jazz Band

Every Thursday morning and afternoon one can hear the Jazz Band rehearsing in the hall, preparing for any gig which might come their way! The pupils have mastered a number of songs and the art of improvising has also been mastered by a few of the members, with some interesting outcomes emerging. The newly bought bass guitar and drumkit has been in full use. This group of talented musicians and singers are looking forward to making their debut on the Fairbairn College stage on 14 August.

Wind Ensemble

It has been a fun and exciting year for the Fairbairn Wind Ensemble so far. The group has fourteen players, consisting of recorders and flutes. The repertoire consists mainly of pop music and the group is inching closer to becoming a tight unit. We are looking forward to what the rest of the year holds for this enthusiastic group of musicians.
